Train Held Up by Anti-Vivisection Protestors

Protestors blockade rail tracks to delay vivisectors sightseeing visit to the West Coast.

Over the 18th and 19th August 2003 Christchurch hosted ANZCCART (Australia and New Zealand Council for Care of Animals for Research and Training), the biannual conference of Australasian animal researchers. On the Wednesday, a scheduled break between ANZCCART and the conference of ANZSLAS (Australia and New Zealand Society for Laboratory Animal Science), the vivisectors hired the rear two carriages of a scenic train to the West Coast. They were met by 15 protesters who attempted to

Well done!

Any pics?

sweetly done!

Nice work to the Chch folks!

One suggestion - please lay a Police Complaints Authority (PCA) complaint about the police dog handler carrying a gun. This is a breach of police reg's and I think of NZ law. If it isn't carefully stamped out, we will see pigs turning up with guns to every protest. As I understand it, there was no evidence for police to believe the protest was violent in any way, so absolutely no justification for the wearing of arms (which are supposed to be issued from a station under instructions from a senior officer...).

Nice tactics too, to catch a train at the station - it made what would normally be highly dangerous (trying to stop a train by sitting on the tracks) due to the stopping distance required for trains, into something safe and effective.

Again - sweetly done.

Blowing your own trumpet.

Here we go again blowing our own trumpets in what we deam to be a triumph. Who actually cares how long you stoped the train for.
You are supposed to be intelligent people so tell me what you actually achieved by sitting on the tracks. You moved when the police came anyway. Why did you move are the animals you are trying to protect not worth a night in jail.

well actually

well actually we delyed the train enough to make them miss the brewery tour which they were going to, they didn't get thier money back and were pissed off about it. Yes the animals are worth going to jail for, I've spent time in jail for anti-fur protests already and I expect more arrests in the future. But no lives were going to be directly saved, the police would have moved us within a few minutes anyway and be out of towners we didn't want to have to come back to Chch for court (being arressted doesn't just mean cells only). its called thinking tactics instead of just charging in for pointless arrests.

train delay

Was delaying the train by 15 minutes really such a great achievement? Tranzrail frequently have delays of more than an hour, and that without a protester in sight :)

Well

According to certain under cover anti-vivisectionists based on the West Coast, the vivisectors were very disappointed to miss their tour of the Monteiths brewery due to the train hold up
