An eyewitness account of the National Front rally and the counter-rally.

I was there.

The media reports talked the numbers way down. Maggie Tait wrote there were 20 anarchists, 40 NF members at the NF rally/counter-rally and 800 anti-racists at the MCA rally in the Dominion Post. Pansy Wong, the National MP estimated 1000. Sunday Star Times estimated 2000.
Newstalk ZB estimated 50 NF members and "a handful" of anti-racist protestors. TV One made an estimate in the thousands, I think 2-3000. There were only 30 or so NF members/supporters, a few of whom left early. They were outnumbered by anarchists from the very start (not even counting the everyone else that turned up to their rally). I'd say the Sunday Star Times/TV One estimate is most accurate.

The NF announced they would wait for the MCA march to arrive before leaving, but didn't do so. Instead, they left for the train station, where they were boxed in, blockaded and prevented from leaving. We did not stop any commuters or trains from leaving, as they claimed. We only blocked a side entrance/tunnel which they were trying to use.

The NF then marched to the law school and assembled in front of the fence. The police line was way overstretched and a couple of hundred people had assembled on the road. We could've completely overrun the NF at that point, as the police was not present in enough numbers to form a line between us and them. One of the NF security people pleaded desperately, which was shown on TV.

Kyle Chapman and his fellow warriors then walked to their cars escaped the crowd, hitting some people, driving over one man's foot and running a red light on the way out. No-one was challenged, stopped or arrested over any of those incidents. A young NF member was bundled into the boot, tears running out of his eyes.

The NF member that was arrested jumped on to the hood of a car, did a "sieg heil" salute and waved around a wooden stick (an axe or pickaxe handle, apparently) yelling things like "bring it!" Despite the direct invitation to violence, he was not mobbed and attacked.

Cale Olsen (NF Palmerston North fuhrer, the guy who got a bloody nose) did up his brown shirt over the NF t-shirt. Cale then wandered around the crowd, trying to blend in. To counter this, a couple of women followed him around yelling "fascist" and the like. He got angry and ripped one of the women's signs then tore it up. She was using crutches at the time. Someone said his band sucked and Cale punched him in the face. He got jumped by several people and got quite a few punches to the face in retaliation. Cale was not arrested, but taken inside the law school.

At some point the police tried to arrest a girl who punched one of the cops, but was unarrested.

Another protestor was arrested following the scuffle. About 40 people turned up at the police station to demand his release. One man was arrested at the police station because he wasn't responding to the police shoving people around sufficiently well.

Several NF members threatened to turn up to Punkfest later that evening. They never made good on their threat, but one of them was chased off a little way down the road while trying to photograph attendees.

Trophies include one of the NF's New Zealand flags, a car mirror and a windscreen wiper from Kyle's car. Kyle was also informed he is too fat to be a trooper.

To re-iterate points made before, neither individual nor collective self-defense is morally equivalent to the NF going out to deliberately hurt people. If you were not there, don't post idiocy like "you guys are as bad as the fascists". By your logic, the New Zealand Army must've been complete bastards to fight in WWII.
