No peace until occupation ends

March 19 marks two years since the US-led invasion of Iraq. Around the world millions will join together in an International Day of Action against war.

In Christchurch, Peace Action Network is gathering to remember the 100,000 Iraqis who have died in this war.

Before the invasion, the Bush regime said Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction and links to Al Qaeda. We now know that these claims were lies.

The real reason for the war is Bush's desire to control Middle Eastern oil and to increase the power of the American empire.

The invasion killed thousands of Iraqis. It also destroyed homes, hospitals and infrastructure.

Iraq's state-owned assets have been privatised and sold to American multinationals.

Both American and British troops tortured prisoners.

Iraqis have been resisting the occupation since it began. Their tactics include armed struggle, strikes and mass demonstrations. Some boycotted the recent elections, others voted for parties opposed to the occupation.

The election was won by the United Iraqi Alliance, a coalition dominated by Shia Islamist groups. All are hostile to the occupation, and some have previously taken up arms against the Americans.

The Bush regime has no intention of giving up control of Iraq. Iraqi people have the right to control their own destiny.

There can be no peace in Iraq until the occupation ends.
