Maritime Union members will refuse to work Japanese ships

The Maritime Union says its members will refuse to work with any Japanese ship involved in whaling that visits a New Zealand port.

Maritime Union General Secretary Trevor Hanson says the Union supports the two environmental groups Greenpeace and Sea Shepherd in their attempts to end Japanese whaling in the Southern Ocean.

Mr Hanson says the escalating situation increased the potential for Japanese ships and planes involved in the whaling operation to visit New Zealand.

"Maritime unionists will not be working those ships."

He says the Maritime Union sees the whaling issue as a part of a wider maritime crisis with overfishing, exploitation of maritime workers and "flag of convenience" shipping.

Mr Hanson says that when the polite approach fails, the use of non- violent direct action is the best method.

"In many cases the exploitation of the maritime environment goes hand in hand with the mistreatment of maritime workers, but because it is out of sight, out of mind off the coast, it is easy to ignore."

He says the New Zealand Government should send a frigate to observe and provide moral support for the protests.

"The Japanese whalers are trying to bluff their way through, but a strong united message now could be the final push needed to end this practice."

I'm in solidarity with the sailors.

Re: Union members will refuse to work Japanese Ships

I think the Waterside Workers Union has refused to work with whaling ships as well, anyone got some info?

Re: Union members will refuse to work Japanese Ships

I am certainly opposed to the senseless torture of whales in Antarctica, so applaud the Union stance. But in the interests of stopping the equally senseless torture of sheep, cattle, pigs and battery hens I would like to know whether they will also refuse to handle ships that have been involved with the meat or egg trade.

great comment/question phil. I note there seems to be no answer there. No anger over the slaughter of chickens held in cages wating to be killed so u all can eat them. EEEMM......wonder why?? I would like to say well done to one od the truely good unions in this country as well. Always been strong and always keeep in contact with their memebers which is more than I can say for many of the unions in this country and many other countrys as well. Well done the sea persons union.

Re: Union members will refuse to work Japanese Ships

excellent news. you can always rely on the maritime unions to be way ahead of most unions when it comes to standing up for the rights of workers and for other political issues too.

Re: Union members will refuse to work Japanese Ships

great to see the union taking a stand on environmental issues and supporting direct action. Also good to see the union secretary putting whaling in the context of a general environmental crisis of overfishing, not opposing whaling as a single issue.

Maritime Union responds

Thanks for the interest and supportive comments.
The Maritime Union seems to have generated some debate on this issue and has received a lot of coverage in both the corporate and alternative media.

The important thing I believe is that the connection between environmental destruction, exploitation of workers, and corporate globalization is made in peoples minds. This is especially true of the maritime industry – the world's first globalized industry.
