Meat sucks but not as much as Taylors

in

This morning as commuters crawled along the Ngauranga Gorge on their way to work a group of about 150 - 200 people were outside their work on strike. The 200 picketing strikers represent three hundred strikers, who represent the thousands of poverty stricken underpaid minimum wage workers of Aotearoa. Some friends and I thought we would go and give them our support by joining the picket.

The workers are from the Taylor Preston meat works which is a meat processing plant that supplies A.E Preston butcheries in Wellington, Porirua and Palmerston North. Workers "work on continuous process lines that never stop - in freezers; in heat; in blood, guts and filth." They work extremely long hours for the most part on minimum adult wage - $9.50 an hour. The managing director of the plant is Andrew Taylor. The Taylor family are worth $57 million according to the National Business Review. Andrew Taylor once said "We don't have a problem with unions, we just don't have them." This statement reflects the treatment payed out to the meat workers in return for their sweat and blood. The management have tried everything to stop the workers unionising, threatening to close the plant, calling in the cops to stop talks with union organisers, refusing MPs entry to the plant, refusing any form of refreshment other than boiling water, docking pay when the machinery breaks down, threatening police prosecution when six sheets of company paper where used to copy a secret ballot result for the notice board and threatening dismissal for anyone caught distributing union material. You can read all about it in a Half page union advert in the scummy dom post page A9 Tuesday the 7th of Feb.

So basically this is a case of extreme exploitation. The people I met down at the picket were really nice and struggling to get by, most of them have families to look after (many of whom were at the picket) which is near impossible on a minimum wage. The benefit is not really an option as there is too long a stand down if they are sacked. These people can not afford to lose their jobs but are taking the risk because their working conditions are more degrading than not having a job. The bosses know this, which is why they have got away with it for so long' however things are set to change; the exploitation must end.

The workers were offered a thirty cent pay rise and when this was refused they were offered a 10% pay increase over the next three years ,which is ridiculous as the minimum wage is likely to outstrip this before then, so needless to say they declined. The strike is now on day two and will hopefully only go one more day. The workers aren't paid for the days they are on strike and this is a huge sacrifice for them. Their humility is inspiring as they are out on a limb and they are not asking for anything more than for people to write to: Taylor Preston Ltd, office@tpl.co.nz .

Most of the workers have never been on strike or a picket before and are new to the union however they are strong and committed. I think their demands will be met as I can't see them backing down. One striker said that the strike experience should not just be about getting a pay rise but making the workers stronger, regaining their dignity and learning to organise. Choice!

Joining the picket was very humbling and reminded me how privileged I am, not having a family of my own to care for and not needing to work. I don't want people to have to work for bosses or to eat meat but those are my personal choices. From my place of privilege I can't stand by and ignore the exploitation of the poor for the gross benefit of the rich and powerful. It was awesome to see people organising to tell the boss to shove it. The Taylor family make me sick and angry. How can they live at peace while hoarding so much wealth? With the full knowledge that their staff are poverty stricken and suffering under the conditions they enforce. Andrew Taylor should be made to pay.

All power to the strikers. I wish them all the best. m rawnsley.

Cool post m!

Re: Meat sucks but not as much as Taylors

Screw them all, go vegetarian!

Re: Meat sucks but not as much as Taylors

I am a vegan. I am interested in arquments for veganism. Do you have anything inteligent or interesting to say? Actually this is probly not the best forum for it as this post is about workers beeing exploited, not why people should get screwed for no apparent reason.

Re: Meat sucks but not as much as Taylors

i'm shocked by how many animal liberationists seem to think that people who work in animal abuse industries deserve shit working conditions. few people in aotearoa have the privilege of leaving a job because it is unethical, especially those on minimum wage who have families to feed. these workers aren't the ones benefiting from the torture and murder of animals. the taylor family are the ones making millions by exploiting their employees and murdering animals.

even if you truly don't give a shit about the rights of humans, think of it this way: if the workers get a decent wage, that's less money going to the taylors for abusing animals.

yes i'd like to live in a world where animals are treated with dignity and compassion, not as resources to be owned and exploited. i'd also like to live in a world where people don't have to slave away in soul killing jobs just to keep from dying of starvation. how can you have compassion for a pig, a cat, a rabbit, a great spotted kiwi, and not feel the same compassion for a humyn being? the struggle for animal liberation and the struggle for humyn liberation aren't opposed, they are the same struggle.

Re: Meat sucks but not as much as Taylors

Right on anarkalilith. I could'nt agree more.

Anarkalilith, I dont think its fair to say

Re: Meat is murder, blame Taylors

Actually I think all animal rights activists would agree that the owners of Taylor Preston slaughterhouse are far more responsible for the deaths of 8000 animals every day (at the wellington slaughterhouse alone) than the ordinary workers. But we want to see those slaughterhouses closed down, not reformed. If the workers there succeed in improving their wages and working conditions, then good luck to them and I hope they succeed, but its not going make any difference to the animals. Personally I would rather spend my time promoting vegetarianism than helping to reform an industry I think should be abolished. what other people do is entirely up to them, unless of course they are slaughterhouse bosses, in which case I hope they die (humanely of course!)

Re: Meat sucks but not as much as Taylors

I support meat workers when they strike because that costs abusers money without me havng to get arrestted or make an effort to smash anything. Easy. Like Mao said, the enemy of your enemy is your friend. I also understand the other vegans comments too tho, I couldn't care less about any animal abuser. And no Anarcha Lilith, I don't support them because they have to feed there kids. They may not feel like they have a choice but they do. Organic vegan co-opts are a better alternative. And so what Mark R if some vegans don't care about workers? Thats thier issue, these people are abusing animals, and an animals life is of equal value. Would you support a rapist for better pay if they got paid for being a rapist?

Re: Meat sucks but not as much as Taylors

--------spot the scum bag--------

you vegetarians seem to have alot of sympathy for a bunch of dickheads. Sympathy for the devil right? And look at you now, attacking the vegans.

If I could go out and protest a fur store, even by myself or go out and support some scumfucks, gee I wonder what I'll do today..? Are you just trying to increase your working class cred by selling out the animals down the drain? Or do you really just not give a toss in the first place?

I find alot of vegetarians seem to go out of their way to act like they don't care if people eat meat and placate meat eaters, defeats the point of being vegetarian really..

Re: Meat sucks but not as much as Taylors

I have ZERO SYMPATHY for these slaughterhouse working SCUM!! NONE!!!!! They are SICK, SADISTIC TORTURERS AND MURDERERS!!!! They are EVIL and SUBHUMAN!! Hopefully they will fall into the machinery that they use on the poor innocent animals, and be GROUND UP ALIVE!!! They do not deserve to live!!!!

Re: Meat sucks but not as much as Taylors

You not once mentioned the "sniggers and comments" about some of the lax attitudes about animals that suffer in the process.

I've been there, they laugh like it's a joke. It's not a clean killing process, and there are more mistakes then you will ever know.

People that work there should be paid more, I agree, but for the stress caused my doing the job, that I'm sure many people on this god given earth don't even want to see.
