Protesters Storm the Stage of the "Champion Canterbury Awards"
About 20 protesters made quite a ruckus at Thursday's "Champion Canterbury Awards" in Christchurch.
Attendees to the awards, including Helen Clark and the Christchurch mayor, were greeted with drums, chants, heckles ('Why don't you get a real job?' was a favourite) and banners.
There were three key targets of the awards: Solid Energy for planning to decimate Happy Valley on the West Coast with their proposed Cyprus Mine; Crop & Food who are currently testing 'roundup-ready' GE onions; and the Cancer Society who spend a massive amount of their budget on vivisection.
Protesters dressed in $2-shop suits managed to get into the conference, despite the heavy police presence, enjoyed a few glasses of complimentary wine and stormed the stage just prior to the award ceremony beginning. They had ample time to chant, scream and explain what they were opposed to. They also carried a banner that read "Don't Award the Capitalist Hoard".
The police that were outside intimidating the protesters panicked and quickly turned to race inside but ran straight passed the three protesters as they casually made their own way out.
No arrests resulted, though numerous people were threatened.
Helen Clark was reported as saying that she thought she was in for a night of "Theatresports" before she realised it was "just the local anarchists".
The Christchurch Press reported the events in a couple of columns. They tried to defend themselves as the primary sponsors of the event but, instead, summed up the protesters standpoint with accuracy unusual in mainstream media.
"[The awards] are an unabashed celebration of the virtues of capitalism... A tiny band of protesters called themselves "anti-capitalists" ... deplored the honouring of those who "exploited" or made profits from the community, animals and the environment."
The protesters also staged their own "Corporate Backscratch Awards" outside, with awards like ‘eco-terrorist’ for Solid Energy, ‘bio-hazard’ for Crop and Food and ‘animal torture’ for the Cancer Society.
None of the camps were willing to accept their awards on the night, so were visited Friday morning where they were delighted to see the protesters again and gratefully accepted the awards.

Anarchism is actually a leftist position that originated with Marx. The left believes that people should work together as a collective. Anarchism is simply the Utopian form of this whereby people co-operate so readily that no government is required to force them.
No rightist would ever advocate Anarchism. This is because of their belief in Individualism. Since they believe people are individuals and not drones in a collective, they acknowledge that legitimate disagreements can occur, and therefore some final arbiter (the government) is needed.
The most extreme rightist position is not Anarchism, but pure laissez-faire Capitalism in which there is separation of Church and state and of economy and state, but there is still a state.

The short term for, Individualism,Limited government, and Free trade is Libertarianism! and it is not extreme right!
And just because we are individualist's does not mean we do not believe in community, but that all community should be voluntary and that no collective can violate the rights of an individual. Trade is an expression of voluntary community.Government is an organised form of our right to self defence, and act as an arbitrator in disputes. When government usurps greater powers than this it becomes contray to its true function and may be rightfully overthown, and a new government restablished upon these princples.
Government is a negitve force not a positive one, in that it is to halt violation of our rights and must not assume a roll of "Socialism" which is a pretence that government may do what ever it likes as long as it can claim is acts "for our own good".
This means it cannot not stop me from smoking.
It cannot stop me from eating fatty foods.
It cannot force me to go to school.
It cannot rob me by taxation to feed my lazy neibour or visa versa!
The reason the left and the right dont like the idea of limiting the state to it's negitive functions is because they all seek to use political power to serve their own ends, usually under the guise of "Humanitarianism"
The left is State ownership of every thing.
The right is state control of everything.
The center is a mix of both.
Libertarianism has no place in this scheme at all!

I work for Solid Energy. Anyone care to explain what I am supposed to do to get money to feed my kids? Since Im not a vegetarian, selling dope isnt an option.....
Advice for Solid Energy worker
First, I assume you are taking activist criticisms personally. In capitalism where the means to fulfill your basic needs are controlled by the most selfish, most of us have to work for them at one time or another to survive. We are criticizing the company's policy not attacking its workers.
Second you could start or join a union and try to use your collective bargaining power to influence management. For instance you could refuse as a group to work on the Happy Valley site, forcing the company to reconsider its intention to develop it.
Third, you could consider looking for an energy company to work for that doesn't despoil native habitat to sell a dirty, inefficient and unsustainable form of energy like coal. There are companies running wind and solar farms, selling solar hot water systems and these will increase as fossil fuels become costlier.
Finally you could drop out of the money economy and grow your own food as a family. This is easier than ever to do because of the number of rural communities with freehold land that need new, younger members and the development of permaculture of eco-villages and community gardens even within the cities.

Worker, I care about Solid Energy cause coal is a really good way to destroy the earths atmosphere and cause global warming. You should care, as you probably do, that your kids are going to have to live in a world where the sea level is rising, the weathers getting worse, disease is increasing, and New Zealand is being ruined economically. All so we can have some cheap energy and make a profit from selling our coal to fire the steel mills of japan and india.
You're right in one very important respect though, short of dropping out of capitalist society altogether you cant do all that much to avoid pumping money back into an economy you have no control over. Thats why eco-loons such as myself advocate a non-capitalist society, where business can't make money out of pollution.

Thank you for your summary of Libertarianism. I have looked at Libertarianism before, and if I understand, Libertarians take the position that "freedom is good" as their starting point. That seems way to abstract a starting point, and it is in no way self evident that freedom it good. Likewise with Socialists taking "the good of society" as their starting point. Both seem equally invalid to me.

worker, the proposed 'cypress stream' coal mine in the waimangaroa valley (aka happy valley) is expected to create a grand total of 30 (thirty) jobs in its ten year life.
solid energy has already expressed that it may have difficulty finding skilled workers locally, and thus may be employing people from overseas, therefore NOT helping you to feed your kids at all.
(headline on the front page of the westport news in july stating 'solid energy may employ uk miners').
and if the mine goes ahead, what will have happened in just ten short years time? the valley will have been destroyed, endangered species (kiwi and powelliphanta) will have been killed, rivers will have been poisoned, climate changed will have increased, fossil fuel resources will be further depleted, and those thirty workers will be out of a job.
what the west coast needs is sustainable jobs - somewhere that you can work for the rest of your career, and then you kids, and their kids....
solid energy's mine will not provide that for you.
