Anarcha-feminist Stitch'n'Bitch (stitching optional)

Tuesday 1st - Friday 4th of February, 2005, Marama-iti

This year's anarcha-feminist convergence will be a rare opportunity
for women to gather in a safe space, and find the collective strength
to fight for our liberation. It should also be damn good fun. We've
set aside the first two days (tues, weds) for networking, planning,
prioritising and having some serious korero about women's issues.
Thursday and Friday will be a celebration of our strengths and
creativity, with music, crafts, physical activities, and open space
for spontaneous skill-shares and workshops. All women, intersex and
transgender people who share the basic principles of
anti-authoritarian, anti-capitalist feminism are warmly invited on
the understanding that the kaupapa of this event is anarcha-feminist.

Children are most welcome, childcare and fun activities provided.

Location: Marama-iti, Wanganui. Email us at stitchnbitch@anarchism.org.nz for directions.

Accommodation: BYO bedding. There will be a marae-style sleeping
arrangement in the barn at Marama-iti. We have some spare mattresses
but bring your own along if you have them. There is space for camping
for those who prefer to bring a tent.

Food: There will be communal vegan food, three meals a day. Please
let us know if you have any other dietary requirements, allergies
etc.

Costs: There is a suggested Koha of $30 for 4 days. However, if you
can bring along locally abundant produce/cheap food from your region,
this would be much preferable. Let us know what you can bring so we
can coordinate.

Childcare: If there are men involved in the care of a child attending
the Stitch'n'Bitch, they are welcome to come for the purposes of
childcare, cooking, cleaning etc. However, men will not be involved
in any of the workshops. It would be great if women bringing
children/men could let us know in advance. It is not essential that
any women bringing a child also bring a man! There will be childcare
rosters going on and children will also be welcome at workshops.

Stuff planned: Discussions on what is anarcha-feminism?, why do we
still need feminism?, what are our priorities for change?, how should
we deal with sexual abuse in our movement and community?, Maori
feminism, fertility and relationships, and the herstory of
anarcha-feminism (in Aotearoa); workshops on facilitation,
screen-printing, bookbinding, using an axe and a chainsaw, a book
swap and a clothing-swap, lots of massage circles and general
pampering. Lots of open space for more ideas too.

Other stuff we'd like to see happen: talks/workshops on eco-feminism,
mechanics, home handywoman skills, belly-dancing, nutrition,
herbalism, sewing, self-defense, yoga, pilates, martial arts,
creative writing, self-care, mental health, body image.... you name
it!

Registration:

email us at stitchnbitch@anarchism.org.nz to register
you interest and to get directions to the venue. Tell us about any workshops you would like to see
happen/coordinate yourself. Please also let us know what food you can
bring, if you have special requirements and if you’re bringing kids.
We might try to get a car pool going too, so if you are driving
up/down or need a ride let us know.

See you there!

is it a safe space, i.e. drug and alchohol free?

Re: Anarcha-feminist Stitch'n'Bitch :: Tuesday 1st – Friday 4th

is it a safe space, i.e. drug and alchohol free?

Re: Anarcha-feminist Stitch'n'Bitch :: Tuesday 1st – Friday 4th

My understanding is that yes it is drug and alcohol free.

Why would be unsafe if wasn't though? Personally I think it would great fun to have a beer or two with a bunch of inspiring women. It's not like drinking at a dodgy bar or something!

Re: Anarcha-feminist Stitch'n'Bitch :: Tuesday 1st – Friday 4th

sounds awesome. have fun wimmin!

Re: Anarcha-feminist Stitch'n'Bitch :: Tuesday 1st – Friday 4th

are male children welcome at the workshops?

love how you're turning the tables by only allowing men to be involved in looking after the children and preventing them from entering the discussions and workshops.

way to go bitches!

Re: Anarcha-feminist Stitch'n'Bitch :: Tuesday 1st – Friday 4th

Sounds great, have fun! It's really inspiring to hear the @-fems are sorting shit out

Snitch & Bitch :: the "kiwi" way

sounds like a clare party where one and all clam bumpers can have a good whinge.

Re: Anarcha-feminist Stitch'n'Bitch :: Tuesday 1st – Friday 4th

two claw and dk you sad little men. like every other space in society isn't mens space?

(sigh)

Re: Anarcha-feminist Stitch'n'Bitch :: Tuesday 1st – Friday 4th

ARRRRRRRRRRRKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!

Re: Anarcha-feminist Stitch'n'Bitch :: Tuesday 1st – Friday 4th

at the conference there was a mens caucus and a wimmens one. why not have some workshops for the men that will be there childminding? why go out of your way to exclude men when it wouldn't hurt to have some mental stimulation for the men who have to be there.

just a thought.

Re:drug and alcohol free safe space

Alcohol can be a great contributor to violence and some womyn may be the victims of alcohol induced violence (I have been in the past and by women not men in fact). Personally I'd just feel very uncomfortable with people drinking and taking drugs. We want to make the space comfortable for everyone right? Yes. So this is just another of those things that need to be addressed to make everyone feel welcome. Also we'll probably all be a lot more productive and clear headed by detoxing for a few days.

Re: Anarcha-feminist Stitch'n'Bitch :: Tuesday 1st - Friday 4th

to q, there must be a mistake, it's an anarcha-fem gathering, why would they waste time organising stuff for men!

safe space?!

I wonder whether any efforts are being made to make sure survivors of (sexualised) violence can feel comfortable, e.g. by making sure they won't be confronted with women who took part in their "abuse" (example: spat on their boyfriend's survivor..) or males that were/are abusers (male childcarers).

Re: Anarcha-feminist Stitch'n'Bitch :: Tuesday 1st - Friday 4th

Rehzi is making libelious and stupid comments about something she knows shit all about. Rehzi seems to be making these accusations because she has no roots in this movement and can get away with aggrivating a situation for her own smug satisfaction. My bet is she'll disappear as soon as anyone attempts to make her accountable or responsible for the crap shes talking.

Re: Anarcha-feminist Stitch'n'Bitch :: Tuesday 1st - Friday 4th

speak for yourself megan, i don't need to detox and also don't actually need you or anyone telling me what to put in my body or not.
alcohol is not the danger to this conference and you know it.

punk boy :
can't you handle what rehzi is saying? if she's wrong then why are you getting so upset and threatened by it? or are you afraid of someone involved in movements where rapists actually get dealt with how they deserve

as for 'responsibilty' why don't you use your real name if you are so concerned about accountability

Re: Anarcha-feminist Stitch'n'Bitch :: Tuesday 1st - Friday 4th

hmmm... second attempt.
sounds fun - wish i could go! hope it goes well, have a wicked time laydees!

Re: Anarcha-feminist Stitch'n'Bitch :: Tuesday 1st - Friday 4th

Nice one. :) Theres been a few of these in perth, and the women have really liked em.

To the fellas critisising this. Looks to me like men can come , just not in the workshops. I'm sure the ladies wont mind if you organise a few mens workshops on your own. Get together with the boys and discuss how gender and stuff affects men. Now surely you dont need the women to organise THAT for you too! Ya'd almost think us guys are uselss without women to do the thinking for us! :) :)

Guys: Just organise some mens stuff in paralell. Everyone wins in that scenario.

Re: Anarcha-feminist Stitch'n'Bitch :: Tuesday 1st - Friday 4th

I don't normally post on here. I think it's sad that I would finally have to get pissed off with the comments on here except it seems to be lefties and not the rightwing wankers that normally post on here.

I don't think this is the place for these discussions please move them somewhere else.

I don't quite understand why men should be allowed at all. To the person claiming that no one has a right what you put in your body - you are right. No one has the right to do that. But using your own arguement - perhaps you could say no one has the right to say men can't come? I don't think they should be able to because it should be a safe space. I think the same arguement goes for alchohol. I don't have the right to say what someone should do or not, but I think we have the right to ask for a space to be safe. You can drink somewhere else, men can go somewhere else.

Seems logical surely?

Re: Anarcha-feminist Stitch'n'Bitch :: Tuesday 1st - Friday 4th

the issue is really that alcohol in this case is *not* what will make the space safe or unsafe, it's issues of how the anarchist movement has been dealing with rape and rape survivors which is the key concerns of quite a few people, and which will make the space unsafe.

but you're right this is not the forum to discuss it in.

so megan, instead of us having a veiled arguement about it here, why not reply to questions i asked about this on the anarcha-fem organising list????

Re: Anarcha-feminist Stitch'n'Bitch :: Tuesday 1st - Friday 4th

would you really welcome M-to-F transexuals? i just wonder how much acceptance a chick with a dick would find at a feminist conference. i've heard some women get quite upset at the idea...as if by renouncing my masculinity i'm showing a lack of respect towards women in general. for me it's more that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery..but don't worry, i wasn't thinking of turning up anyway.

Re drugs at conference

we all have our own concerns for what will make the conference best for us. All I'm saying is that for myself fell that the camp is a safe space I'd need to know that it is going to be drug free. It is totally ridiculous for you to say that there is only one thing that could make the conference not be a safe space for each individual! I will email the list now to explain further. But please do not attack me as I have treated you with respect even though you have not me.

If any females want to join the @ fem NZ list email me or visit http://lists.enzyme.org.nz/mailman/listinfo/anarcho-feminism_lists.enzym...

Drugs at the Talkfest

If you want a safe violent free conference- there are certain drugs you can take that will encourage such an atmosphere.

Re: Anarcha-feminist Stitch'n'Bitch :: Tuesday 1st - Friday 4th

Actually blanket statments like that dr mike is what causes people who are intolerant to drugs have overdoses.

Re: Anarcha-feminist Stitch'n'Bitch :: Tuesday 1st - Friday 4th

This sounds like it will be a great event to pick up chics. There's nothing I'd like more than an angry, repressed, anarcho-feminist vegan seamstress to party with. I can see it now: hot, wet, lingerie clad anarcho-feminists engaging in some steamy lesbo action at this convergence! You New Zealand women sure know how to party. Wish I could be there!

Re: Anarcha-feminist Stitch'n'Bitch :: Tuesday 1st - Friday 4th

The traditional roles are that the man must earn the money and the woman must raise the children. No choice for either party.

But looking at today's society I would say women have to a certain extent been liberated from these roles. It is now acceptable for her to do either. Men on the other hand are less liberated. It is still very much expected that they be the breadwinner, and people wonder about you if you aren't.

The problem is not that women aren't yet liberated. It is that given the choice, a lot of women are realizing that the office they longed for is stressful and boring and maybe their traditional role wasn't so bad after all. And the feminists don't like this. Well every persons life is their own.

P.S. a lack of drugs and alcohol doesn't make a place safe. People still have free will and can decide to smash your face in. The only thing that makes a space safe is the threat of government retaliation against anyone who decides to initiate force. And since this is an anarchist meeting, and anarchists don't believe in government, they obviously don't care about your safety in the slightest.

Re: Anarcha-feminist Stitch'n'Bitch :: Tuesday 1st - Friday 4th

I totally agree having it drug and alcohol free, I mean its only 4 days, if u can't go without alcohol that long maybe u do need to detox!!
Also it is suppose to be children friendly.. I hope that means that kids won't be shut in a room at night (and their mums/dads - if they care) whilst all else party. Revolution not exclusion.
peace, sorry I can't be there have a wicked time everyone.xxx

Re: Anarcha-feminist Stitch'n'Bitch :: Tuesday 1st - Friday 4th

Hope everything goes well at the gathering. I for one think it's an excellent thing to be happening, regardless of any disagreements about the exact form of its organisation, and I hope those disagreements form the basis of fruitful discussion before, during and after the gathering. I look forward to hearing how it went and anything that those who took part wish to share with the general public.

Re: Anarcha-feminist Stitch'n'Bitch :: Tuesday 1st - Friday 4th

howd it go?

Re: Anarcha-feminist Stitch'n'Bitch :: Tuesday 1st - Friday 4th

Hey girls!How did the anarcha feminist convergence go? It would be cool to hear some comments on this site, as the anarchy one is down at the moment.

Re: Anarcha-feminist Stitch'n'Bitch :: Tuesday 1st - Friday 4th

wish i could've been there!!!!
