Violent eviction of 3,000 families in Brazil
A large military police operation has evicted the land occupation Sonho Real (Real Dream) in the city of Goiânia, Brazil. Two people have been killed and many seriously wounded. Over 800 people have been arrested. Among the arrested are two Indymedia volunteers, one from Goiânia and one from Indymedia New York [Report].
Still coming in are many uncomfirmed reports of murders and extreme police violence, in addition to the reports about missing bodies. At this time, some of the arrested remain in jail and it is estimated at least 50 people missing, based on the various eye witness reports.
The Sonho Real occupation began in May last year, in an area which has been abandoned for years and quickly grew to 3,000 families living there. No other space was provided for them after their eviction. The eviction was ordered in January, and since then police have been conducting sudden attacks including concussion bombing and the firing of rubber bullets into the occupation.
Funerals and protests against the eviction have also been marked by police repression, violence and arrests.
