Take Back The Night - Auckland
Downtown Auckland was hit yesterday with a very sucessful, very noisy "Take Back the Night" rally and march.
Children, Witches, other womyn and those who love them gathered in Aotea Square at 7:00 pm, October 28th to Take Back the Night and reclaim the right to free movement for womyn.
There are many reasons to hold a take back the night event in Auckland or anywhere else in Aotearoa/NZ and beyond. Did you know that domestic assults increase by 25% when the all blacks lose a game? Did you know that a womyn in NZ is killed every 5 weeks by her "(ex)partner".
For all these reasons and more womyn gathered in solidarity to resist what is arguably the oldest form of oppression; and drew the links between modern oppression of womyn, murder and torture of "witches" in europe, the united states and the african continent, and halloween.
The rally lasted about an hour with a raffle for womyn empowering art-work, stirring speeches/poetry and lantern lighting. The rally was followed by a boisterous and rambunctions all womyn's march, with male supporters following in quiet soliderity behind them. Chants included:
"Riots, not Diets, no longer we stand quiet!"
"Yes means yes, No means no, What ever we wear, Where ever we go!"
"As womyn of the world we stand, equality is what we demand!"
Auckland's swinest showed up for a brief stint towards the end of the march. With lights on and the sirens blaring, the burly uniforms swerved their cars aggressivly into the front of the march, narrowly missing at least one of the marchers. Characteristicly, they demanded to talk to...."The Leader". The womyn, cunninly ignored them and filtering threw their squad cars and agressive cock presence, continued on trick and treating them like the "just another obstacle on the march for womyn's rights" they were.
The march ended shortly thereafter, and organically transformed into a womyn's circle, and men's circle (to talk about violence against womyn in their own lives and what to do about it), complete with fire-spinning, jack-o-lanterns and fire spinning.
All in all a very sucessful demonstration...but there is still much work to be done!

It was a fantastic march and had an electric atmosphere. Thanks to all those who organised it, it certainly drew a lot of attension from bystanders and got a lot of people talking!

Wow, must be disappointing that since you weren't there you have no idea how many people actually did show up. In reality, our turn out was wonderful with over 100 in attendance. Oh but you were there right? You know with your other piggie friends, yeah but you were too late for any action on your part. Sad piggies that night. As for a hate gathering, no remember that's what you do when you're out at the recent N.F., Destiny's Church or P.D. gathering. Threatened much? Yeah well maybe you should be. The cops give the funniest excuses for why they're at protests, but I figure this one has to go in the top ten.

actually, it looks like male circumcision reduces the risk of contracting HIV by about 60%, I'm not particularily worried, but I kind of wish I had been circumsised as a child.

Its good to see women getting together and marching. Its good to show the chauvinists out there that women do in fact have the ability to organise at a grass roots level.
I hate to stand on the outside giving unsolicited advice, but here goes...
I think that this group needs to target some employers of (predominantly) women workers. Actually fashion labels come to mind. A few years a go a friend of mine did some work on the exploitation of (predominnatly) women clothing workers by such kiwi icons as Karen Walker etc
What a great target! Not only do Karen's design reinforce and cater to stereotypes about what a woman should look like, but she uses and exploits women who make these clothes that they could never afford to wear...

The police showed up because we were blocking the roads, not only for cars but for two busses and one (abeit sirens off) ambulance.
I know the police system isn't perfect, BUT. These are the people who are actually called out to deal with offenders, and who help ensure the parks and streets are safer than they would be otherwise. I was really surprised to see people yelling abuse at them... isn't that demonising the wrong people? Because right now, they're doing a lot more to stop violence than that march of 30/100/whatever people did.

On this site there is a photograph of myself, friends and the 9-yr old daughter of a friend. The photo is dominated by someone else's banner bearing the slogan, "Patriarchy fuck off". Whilst supporting the freedom of expression of those attending the march, I feel very uncomfortable and offended at the idea of us and a young child being wrongly associated with an obscene slogan. Would it be possible for those who assembled these images to remove this one? Our support of the aims of the march is unchanged but this is an unauthorised and unpleasant use of our images. As for the stats and facts: Studies show that the testosterone levels of the losing team's fans drop as a result of a loss. Am I to believe that lowered testosterone levels leads to violence against women?
