Taurewa Land Occupiers Hopeful of Halting Sale

in

Members of the Tuwharetoa Iwi occupying land in the central North Island say they are optimistic that a proposed sale will be halted. Taurewa Marae has been established on one of the blocks currently controlled by the government body Land Corp which make up the Taurewa Sheep Station near to National Park township.

The land has been deemed surplus to government requirements and a proposal to sell the land for a development, reportedly to include luxury accommodation and a golf course, has emerged. However, residents of the marae say Land Corp officials, who recently visited the occupation, admitted the proposed sale was illegal as the land had not been first offered back to its original owners.

Tuwharetoa FM | Tino Rangatiratanga | Aocafe

Land Corp took over control of the land from the former Lands and Survey Department. The Taurewa block was originally stolen by the government using the excuse that it was needed as a military training area, but it was never used for that purpose and was instead leased as a farm. The occupation is beside State Highway 49, opposite the turn off to Whakapapa. The Tino Rangatiratanga and Confederation of the United Tribes of New Zealand flags mark the entrance.

This is fantastic!!!! With Camp Sovereignty in Boon Wurrung (Melbourne) & The Douglas Creek Reclamation in Canada, and Tuwharetoa standing proud, it goes to prove world over that you cant be much of an Indigenous person without your own land to practice your culture, and sustain your people on.

Kia kaha, kia mau, kia manawanui !!!!
Our whanau salute you.

"SECOND INTERNATIONAL DECADE OF THE WORLD'S INDIGENOUS PEOPLE
Adopted by the General Assembly, 22 December 2004
On 22 December 2004, the General Assembly adopted Resolution A/RES/59/174 for a Second International Decade, which commenced on 1 January 2005. The Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, Mr. José Antonio Ocampo was appointed Coordinator for the Second Decade.

The Decade has five main objectives:

Promoting non-discrimination and inclusion of indigenous peoples in the design, implementation and evaluation of international, regional and national processes regarding laws, policies, resources, programmes and projects;
Promoting full and effective participation of indigenous peoples in decisions which directly or indirectly affect their lifestyles, traditional lands and territories, their cultural integrity as indigenous peoples with collective rights or any other aspect of their lives, considering the principle of free, prior and informed consent;
Redefining development policies that depart from a vision of equity and that are culturally appropriate, including respect for the cultural and linguistic diversity of indigenous peoples;
Adopting targeted policies, programmes, projects and budgets for the development of indigenous peoples, including concrete benchmarks, and particular emphasis on indigenous women, children and youth;
Developing strong monitoring mechanisms and enhancing accountability at the international, regional and particularly the national level, regarding the implementation of legal, policy and operational frameworks for the protection of indigenous peoples and the improvement of their lives. "

PRECISELY what Helen and the Colonialists do NOT want Maori to have.

Re: Taurewa Land Occupiers Hopeful of Halting Sale

Tena koutou nga hapu katoa kai raro i nga Kahui Maunga e whawhai tonu ana mo ta tatou whenua rangatira.

I would like to give words of solidarity and support to Ngati Hikairo ki Tongariro; Ngati Tamakana; Ngati Hinewai; Ngati Uenuku; and the many whanau and hapu of Tuwharetoa; Whanganui and Maniapoto who like their ancestors before them Te Kooti Rikirangi; Piki Kotuku; Te Manga; Pehi Turoa; Te Heuheu and many many more fought to protect this last bastion of Maori mana from the erosion of their values by the forces of development and the state armies that would subdue them as their pincer movements worked to the Centre of Papatuanuuku where the lands are located. The whanau kotahi that have occuppied the site at Taurewa since learning during the Waitangi Tribunal hearing in Week Two of the National Park Inquiry have through their strength and tenacity highlighted the unfair processes of landbanking and Treaty sell off that continues while our people seek just recommendations over land wrongfully taken from their control and decision making by successive Crown policy and practices. Furthermore their practices are illustrative of how even the so called Powerful Trust Boards are being ignored by faceless bureaucrats in Wellington from organisations like Landcorp who prefer to promote commercial tendering processes so lands can be placed in the hands of developers in the know. When will these tactics of forced sale and dispossession cease from the crown and its agents.

Ka whawhai tonu tatou

Once again, Maori must stand to defend its rightful ownership.

Once again, European must stand to honour

Re: Taurewa Land Occupiers Hopeful of Halting Sale

Kia ora koutou katoa...as one off the ocupiers at Taurewa it is very humbling to read comments from far and wide and it is with that kind off support that will help lift our spirits and drive us on to fight for what was "Taken" from our tupuna at the stroke of a pen..then given to another government department to use for nearly 100 years!! now they have taken it upon themselves to SELL it!
Now Landcorp have suddenly just discovered that they never had title to it and their talk is that it will be offered back to the Maori!! OFFER...OFFER..
The opposite to offer is buy in their language..
It was taken so the opposite to that is GIVE..don't you all agree
Just give it back..take what isn't nailed down and leave..but what about the improvements that have been made..improvements!!!
Someone convince me that destroying 10,000 acres of native flora to grow grass is an improvement!!
Some off the things we would like answers to are
1)why was it not given back if it was never used for the purpose it was taken
2)who gave them the right to pass it on to Lands and survey then Landcorp
3)who gave Landcorp the right to sell it
4)why has Landcorp decided to sell part off it and plan to sell more...

we have only managed to halt the sale thus far and won a small battle but by no means have we won the war..
As for the Waitangi tribunal!!! well the talk is that they gave them the go ahead so who's side are they on..and why do we need to go there anyway,I don't believe they were there when the land was taken so why do they have to be involved now..we don't want to become a number in the queue and wait another 100 years now do we..
The land was taken at the stroke off a pen so they can stroke it one more time and just give it back...
Did any of you see the news item about the mining down south near Westport? well we started our little "Sit in" with $3-60 yep $3-60 and down south apparently before they can start the mining they have to relocate some snails at a cost.. wait for it $230 million!! bet those one's will never go on a French menu..
Our thanks and warmest regards go out to people like Annette Sykes who took the time to visit our Marae, Te Ururoa Flavell,Winston Peters,and Gerry Brownlee who raised the matter in parliment back in March and Ian Peters who did so nearly 20 years ago..also to all the other iwi and hapu from all over the motu who have given koha..and a special thank-you to all the European people who are supporting us also Thank-you one and all..
Power to the people,
Power to the Taurewa whanau and the kuia and the kaumatua who sit in the freezing cold to fight for the cause..
Don't be shy to call in if you are passing,we are on state highway 47 thats the road from Turangi to National Park and we are right opposite the Whakapapa ski field turn off which takes you up past the Chateau hotel to the ski field..The pots are always boiling..

Re: Taurewa Land Occupiers Hopeful of Halting Sale

Kia ora Taurewa Whanau:
First I would like to acknowledge our Kuia and Koro ma and off course to our cuzzies who hold Ahi Kaa at Taurewa Marae. It is whanau like you that make me feel proud to be a Maori, the stance that you our whanau have taken I wish more of our people would take the same approche. If we all stand together we can cut all this bullshit out that Government tries to confuse us with (politics) as we maori are non-political. We are just common people with common Lore not Law. So I say Kia Kaha to you all our whanau in Taurewa.
Kia Toa, Kia Maia, Kia Manawanui
I have a question? Where is this so called Trust Board in all of this hiding behind the clown GOVERNMENTS skirt Pea! the same Government New Zealand who have no written Constitution to be treating our people like this. I can see it now our whanau what must be will be and the whenua shall go back to the Tangata whenua of Taurewa.
Here's a suggestion Te Ture Whenua Maori, Maori Land Act 1993/95 is now Statute Law there for our people to exercise and use.

Re: Taurewa Land Occupiers Hopeful of Halting Sale

Kia Ora Ngati Hikario, especially Shane. I haven't caught up on the news of your progress since I left the mountain, so it would be great for an update. I totally support you all for the return of your 'taken' land. Your sit-in occured after I left the 'hill' and I have not been up since. If you are all still there I will visit when I am up that way. Obviously Landcorp can't make a buck out of it so I hope that when it is returned you can all enjoy what you haven't had for such a long time. Kia kaha.

Re: Taurewa Land Occupiers Hopeful of Halting Sale

Stop living in the past and perpetuating the grievence mode thinking.. Grow up and catch up or get left behind.. Try adding value to our country instead of allways take take take.. Re: Taurewa Land Occupiers Hopeful of Halting Sale

kia ora te whanau o Taurewa and all our supporters,
The winter has been long and harsh but our spirits have been soaring since we returned to our whenua. The snow and gales and rain have not dampened our spirits, we have gathered together, lit our fire and kept each other warm with our stories, our memories, and our hopes of a better future for our children and mokopuna. The consortium of ten people who tried to buy this land have told us they wish to develop a luxury resort and golf course here. They have said there will be waitressing jobs for our children and if we can pay the green fees we will be allowed to play on the golf course. And some of these buyers are maori, admittedly not from here. How could they want so little for our children? These are the children of the original owners! Do you just take 10,000 acres of land and expect the owners to roll over and play dead? Is that what Maori owners are supposed to do? Or do we pick ourselves up and apply for the waiters job? Can the wannabe buyers understand how ridiculous they are? Or does money get in their eyes? We have given so much, (over 750,000 ha), as maori all over this country have, to support those immigrants who could not make it in their own countries. Now they want to see us as slaves. That's not how we see ouselves. We are the people of the rainbow,(Ngati Uenuku), bright and shining and splendid and we can light up the skies on a grey, damp, rainy day. To those who would say to us we are greedy, I say, you have our mountains Ruapehu, Tongariro, Ngaruahoe, Pihanga, and you have our rivers, 22 of them, and you have our lakes, Taupo and Rotoaira, and you have our lands. You cannot have our children or our future, we have drawn a line in the sand.

Re: Taurewa Land Occupiers Hopeful of Halting Sale

to the idiot cowards who have nothing nice to say about your people u should be ashamed u talk about being a real maori who pays their taxs u talk of how u were born on this whenua, from where im standing you havent given nothing back,i mean u probably go 2 tangi for a feed maybe u even dry the dishes your contribution is very very little when your away workin for the pakeha who is maintaining the whenua....not you.u see your only affinity to the whenua is that u were born on it..lame..who is the real bludger..carry on working for the pakeha and 1 day youll get what u are truly lookin for a hongi from helen clark..then after that when we have fought and maintained the mana whenua and the fruits of our labour are seen u will be home 2 reap the rewards
with proclaimation that u have always supported the cause u make me sick open your eyes, the definition of rangatiratanga is whenua.your tupuna would be ashamed of u we fight for what they fought 4... grow up and do something other then 4 yourselve many sacrifices have been made by those who choose 2 fight...catch up u wanabe pakeha u certainly not a real maori!! we are!!
