35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
Early on Sunday morning, the 19th of November, animal rights activists broke into a battery hen farm in West Auckland removing 35 chickens.
Activists gained entry into Eggs R Us on Henderson Valley Road, by cutting a large hole in one side of a shed. The shed contained row after row of caged hens.
Dozens of rats could be seen running between cages. Many of the birds were in a poor condition, having missing feathers and red inflamed skin from rubbing on the bars; all the birds were de-beaked.
The conditions on this farm were unfortunately standard for this cruel industry; filthy, overcrowded and inhumane.

Nobody genuinely concerned about animal welfare could find these conditions acceptable. While we would of liked to have taken colour photos and footage this was impossible as using lights or flashes would of attracted attention to us being in the sheds. Infra red equipment was all that we could safely use. Our main objective was to remove as many hens from this hell hole that we could. While the 'Animal Welfare' Act continues to allow and indorse such cruel conditions, activists will gain entry to farms by any means necessary to liberate hens from a life of suffering. "all the hens were debeaked......"
The birds in the photos have got beaks. Did you glue the beaks back on for cosmetic reasons before you took the photos?
Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
Yeah bring it on! Big ups to you folks. Thank you.
Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
look a bit harder mate!
Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
"...all the birds were debeaked".
I can see a beak on the birds in the photos. were the beaks re attached following the succesful revolution?
Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
see the stubby upper beak, that's debeaking. it doesn't remove all of the beak.
simon
Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
and sometimes it does remove the whole beak when they botch it. often the birds have to be handfed or they die.
Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
Regardless of how they're treated there's no justification for locking innocent creatures in those cages.
debeaking
Beak trimming removes up to a third of the beak (unless it is botched as a previous poster has described). If adult birds are beak trimmed, the damaged nerve endings can form neuromata. These spontaneously discharge and can cause the same sort of "phantom limb pain" experienced by human amputees. The pain can last for months.
But the humane people at the Ministry of Agriculture think this is unacceptable so they recommend that only young hens be beak trimmed. In this case, no neuromata are formed, and behavioural studies suggest pain "only" last for about a week!
Hen operators will say that beak trimming is necessary to stop hens pecking each other. But there are a number of better ways to go about this, and in fact the RNZSPCA only accredit manufacturers that do not beak trim.
Beak trimming, and battery egg production have been illegal in Switzerland since 1990. Battery eggs production is also illegal in Finland and Sweden, and will be phased out of the entire European Community by 2012. New Zealand is way behind on animal welfare.
For more on battery farming see www.epf.org.nz. Also see www.tegelchicken.co.nz and www.premierbacon.co.nz for more on factory farming of chickens and pigs.
Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
Good job done! I hope they continue by liberating people from the factory farms that call themselves: Caltex, ANZ, Contact Energy, Dunlop, Fairfax, Farmers, Progressive, Telecom, Meridian, KFC, Sealord, SAFE, McDonalds, The Mad Butcher, Shell, Telstraclear, Noel Leamings, Godfrey Hurst, OPSM, Westpac, etc.
Re: Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
Fuck worker slavery!!!
Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
While I am not a particular fan of the wage-slave system, there are crucial differences in the way human workers and factory farmed animals are treated that to my mind makes liberation of animals a priority.
1. Factory workers can go home to their families after work and at weekends
2. Factory workers are not forced to stand in an area less than their own body area.
3. Factory workers have clean toilets. They do not have to lie in their own shit.
4. Factory workers do not have bits of their anatomy removed.
5. Factory workers are not sent to the slaughterhouse as soon as they stop being productive.
6. If factory workers are so obese they are in constant pain when standing that is their own lifestyle choice, they have not been bred that way.
7. Most factory workers are not so bored they have to bite the bars of their cages, or chew each other to bits.
8. Factory workers do not collapse on the job with broken legs.

Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
How about librating the animals that are kept in jail in The Auckland Zoo?
Re: Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
I don't think this will ever happen as the animal activists don't want to upset mainstream society too much. Thus, they only go after a very small sector that most don't care about. If the animal activists were serious about animal rights they would target: zoos, marine parks, supermarkets, butchers and fast food outlets more often. Instead they only go do the same old thing that achieves very little in the end.
Re: Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
I think it is a business decision for AR groups not to annoy mainstream culture too much or else their financial support would dry up.
Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
I wouldn't worry too much about the animal rights industry as most of it is a con. Take SAFE for example. They spent more money on people in wages than on animal rights campaigns. Just check out their financial reports at http://www.companies.govt.nz/cms/banner_template/OBNAME by typing in Save Animals from Exploitation. There you can read SAFE's reports for yourself to find out.
Re: Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
I've just read Safe's accounting reports and it was very interesting to see that the last accountant, in the 2005 ones, put some distance between them and the reports. This should ring alarm bells!!!!!
Re: Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
Yes, run, run away as fast as u can from safe!
Re: Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
Yes, Safe is a scam. After reading their accounts and their internet site my advice for people who are wanting to volunteer in their street appeal - DON'T! In their 2001 accounts they give out loans and the accountant in the 2005 ones said they were dodgy of goodness sake. I say: AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

Thank you, to whoever, for pointing out that SAFE is shonky. I wasn't aware of this until I read it here with the proof provided by its own financial reports. Because of this I'll be cancelling my subscription and donations via automatic payments. Just goes to show that Indymedia is informative while being a jolly good read. Keep up the good work Indymedia!!

It's a pity the AR movement doesn't do more because the biggest losers in all of this are the animals.

Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
why would people liberate animals from zoos?
the animal rights movement in aotearoa
i'd love to hear about all the brilliant society-changing animal rights actions that all you critics have organised or been involved in! seeing as you seem to have so much knowledge on how our society might be changed right away for the benefit of animals, why don't you share your wonderful ideas so we can all help?
instead of being so cynical and critical, why don't you support?
from your comments i'm assuming you're all omnipotent omniscient experts on animal rights activism. i'm sure you're all vegans, who work hard in your everyday lives to educate those around you about animal rights issues. i'm sure you've put in hundreds of hours between you sitting on stalls, talking to strangers, cooking your families vegan meals and showing them by example how to live without eating/abusing animals. i'm sure you've had many occasions where you've had to defend yourself when you've been abused and criticized (even by your loved ones) simply because you believe that it's not right to treat animals as a commodity for human consumption.
and if, on top of this often draining lifestyle, you have better suggestions for instigating mass social change than what the brave people in this story are putting their hearts and energies into, then please do share! i'm all ears..
open rescues
Has it not occurred to the critics that there are immense logistical problems involved with zoo rescues.
Would all those who asked why the AR movement does not liberate animals from zoos volunteer to provide a good home for a zoo animal? Come to think of it, could you tell us an easy way to stuff an elephant, some cheetahs, a tiger and chimpanzees into our getaway vehicle? If you can we would be very glad to hear from you.
Even rescuing full grown pigs from sow stalls is problematic. What is required is a veterinarian and expert animal handler who can sedate the pig and lead the pig (who will understandably not trust humans much) into a truck. The rescuers then need someone with plenty of land to keep the pig on.
Perhaps you can understand why rescuers stick to chooks.

Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
someone once said "the nature of any domesticated animal becomes deranged." I think zoos are wrong because they take animals out of the wild. is this conservation or a pathetic compromise since there is very little wild left in the world! freedom for all!
Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
I agree that zoos are wrong because of the above posting and that animals are being exploited for profit!
Rosie's comments above aren't helpful because they reply to the cynical and critical postings with much of the same. Phil's last posting just shows how unwilling the AR activists are going to go for the animals that they are suppose to protect.
If the AR activists don't like the treatment that they have received here, by so many people showing their displeasure with them, then it might pay for them to go somewhere else.
Re: Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
yeah sorry about my cynicism - was mostly just trying to say that AR activists put in heaps of energy and effort simply in their everyday lives, and it is hard to try and instigate change or rescues on top of that.
as for zoos, yeah it's agonising seeing animals trapped in a situation like that. but zoo rescues.. the whole idea of a rescue, for me, should be about taking an animal out of a bad situation and putting it in a better place. 'rescuing' animals is pointless if the animal is only going to end up in a worse situation. i reckon with zoos we have to start at the other end, for example with their social acceptability. and things like stopping them from taking in new animals, and promoting 'conservation' projects be taken back to where the animals actually come from - in their native wilds.
anyway, we gotta share energies and strategies, attack the problem from all angles, come up with viable solutions/alternatives..
Re: Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
"Phil's last posting just shows how unwilling the AR activists are going to go for the animals that they are suppose to protect".
I can't speak for other activists but for myself I acknowledge that I am not competent enough to cope with the huge logistical problems of rescuing animals from zoos and putting them in a good home. I look forward to reading the media reports when it is discovered that those activists who are so superior to me in that regard and write such justified criticism of my lack of commitment have managed to empty the zoos.

Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
I find it really frustrating seeing so many people post comments slating AR activists for what they have done here. The problem of animal abuse is such a huge one with all kinds of issues and there are so many different ways that humans are abusing and exploiting animals that how are people expected to be able to tackle every one of these issues? I think it's fantastic that people are willing to go to these lengths to save lives. Yes, there are animals who suffer in man made habitats in zoos, there are sows separated from their young and crammed in to sow stalls but that doesn't mean that saving 35 chickens lives and placing them in better homes is any less valid and inspiring an action.
I think it's great for us to discuss the changes that we can all make in our daily lives to help animals and for people to share ideas on how all forms of animal abuse can be abolished, but I think people deserve credit where it's due. Good shit!
Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
i concur that the ar movement does not do enough. instead of crying on how hard ar campaigning is how about finding solutions to the problems instead of throwing it onto others?
remember it is the animals that are the biggest losers in all of this because they are still being: slaughtered, eaten, abused and being used to generate profit for the selected few by the billions!!!
come on: pull your socks up!!!

Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
Looks like the bar has been rised for the AR movement. Now are the AR activists up to the challenge or will they continue running over the same old ground, finding the same old fears? Meanwhile our animal buddies end up on people's dinner plates, displayed in artificial environments or being maimed by the truck-loads while making money for a few individuals!
Re: Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
Oh no - the bar has been raised. I hope nobody gets hurt. Mind you - if it is the bar tab been raised then I'm in. :-)
Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
fuck all these 'bar raising' threats.
if you don't like how something's being done then go do it better yourself.
quit whining at someone else to do it for you. ya big babies.
Re: Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
The above posting is not useful and it shows the true nature of some. I leave it up to individuals to judge what type of nature they have. I guess some people do not like been challenged. Do you really think insults are going to change people’s minds?
Re: Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
Swearing doesn't inspire me. Someone feel threaten by change, maybe?
Re: Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
I know change can be scary because sometimes I feel threaten by it, too. It is a pity that some people feel so threaten that they lash out. Just remember: the only constant is change and the only that can be permanent are your illusions.
Re: Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
Swearing does nothing for me either. Just goes to show what some people are like.

African american people are being tortured and killed, and then these bird things, who cares.
BLACK POWER
Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
The last comment is plain speciesism. If a company was ripping off people in some significant yet minor way (say for example building a bypass through central Wellington, or ripping off some old ladies' pension funds) would there be the same self righteous cries of "how terrible, millions of people are dying, but you are being oh so parochial and worried about a bypass or a few old ladies being robbed". But as soon as anyone makes an effort to end abuses of any other species but our own, we get the same tired old chestnut.
Perhaps you could tell me what you are doing for African Americans, or anyone else. Most of the people bleating about "humans must come first" do nothing for humans or animals. In contrast, most AR activists are also involved in protests against significant human abuses, such as the war in Iraq as well.
BTW I agree about the excessive number of "anonymous" postings. Even though most of us use pseudonyms, we know who we are.
Re: Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
The above posting isn't useful as it doesn't provide any practical solutions. Instead of throwing it onto others to solve the problem why not offer solutions yourself?

yes it is good policy to keep shhhh about real names.
Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
Just a reminder to all those planning to take part in SAFE's upcoming street appeal. Most of the money you'll be getting will be going into people's back pockets in the form of wages and not going directly to animal campaigns. The proof is on www.companies.govt.nz/cms/banner_template/OBNAME by typing in Save Animals from Exploitation and by reading their annual accounts. As all the world can see more money is spent on wages than on the campaigns for the animals.
Re: Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
Fair warning and there is objective proof to back it up. Still it is up to individuals to decide.
Re: Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
From my personal experience, SAFE only exists to keep the selected few in power and pussy, so I never give time or donate money to it. Most unfortunate as the biggest losers are the animals!
Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
hullo, it was good to bump into two of you (one of whon,I know) the other day,on the main street, near the bus stop...you are heroes...liberate the animals...today,on this rainy day,a save the animals from extinction group is collecting donations on the streets of christchurch...if the city voice were still publishing in wellington, you would get more space for your voice...on with the revolution
Re: Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
Nah, I didn't bother giving $$$ to Safe because I know what a front it is to keep the selected few in power and the high life...
Re: Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
I didn't donate anything to SAFE either as it wasn't in my best interest to. It has been proven time and time again on this internet site and the evidence is too strong to support that it doesn't do what it suppose to do: save animals from exploitation.
Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
I do not have anything to do with Safe anymore. After working there on the work for the dole scam all that I learned from the place is that it only exists to keep some in money and very little is done for the animals. What others have written about it is correct and the pussy and power comment sums up the directorship very well. Take for example when I was there I help dump about a warehouse full of old chimp calenders that Safe made. This is proof that it is poorly run. Now they have another calender up for sale but no doubt heaps will be dumped again. Which in turn leads to wasting more money that could be better used. Plus what others have posted in this forum about how lazy the AR movement is are right. Good shit!
Re: Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
SAFE is poorly ran. When I was involved with them they were caught by The Internal Affairs Dept for bullshitting about the raffles they use to have, so they were banned from running them again. That is why they have not had any raffles for the past number of years. That is the reason why I no longer support SAFE.
Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm

It's about time you know who shot the police officer in their mind!
Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
I didn't see any heros collecting for Safe. All what I saw was misguided individuals been fooled into believing that they were doing something noble. While really all that they were doing was supporting an unelighten fiefdom.

You lot aren't the only ones that saw this. I too only saw deluded people collecting cash for an organisation that makes out it is more than what it does. Hence I kept my hard earned money in my pocket and bank account.
Re: Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
Yeah, giving money to Safe is a waste, so I give it to the AAA instead.
Re: Re: Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
For a better return on your time and money you are better off giving to a group like the AAA or HARD. It is because direct action works better than the SAFE drival.
Re: Re: Re: Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Far
Good to see HARD is still hard @ work. Just see http://indymedia.org.nz/newswire/display/40957/index.php 4 proof!
Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
Gee, why do so many people slag off Safe? What have they done to deserve this?
Re: Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
It's because the leadership of SAFE slags off so many different people and organisations both within and without the animal rights movement. So some choose to give it back. As the old saying goes: people who live in glasshouses shouldn't throw stones.
Re: Re: Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
Here! Here!
Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
This makes me so angry, disgusting selfish people. How can they do such a thing. I get so mad when my freinds don't buy free range eggs or chicken and this is why. You guy's did a great thing. Man. I can't beleive this. I hatet hat place, I hope it gets shut down OR changes the way they treat the chickens they make PROFIT from. Man humans can be stupid.
Re: Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
Same here! Free range is much better because there is more colour, texture and taste.
Re: Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
yes i only eat free range eggs i have @ home as i find da supermarket/battery farm ones crap.
Re: Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
I agree that battery/factory farm eggs are awful. That's whay I only eat eggs from my own free range hens that I have at home. The taste is better and I save money, so I kill two birds with one stone.
Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
I don't donate money or have anything to do with the AR movement anymore as the guilt trip doesn't work for me because I find that sort of thing too childish and shallow.
Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
"I kill two birds with one stone" - an unfortunate unintended pun there.
Re: Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
lol
A good news story
Thank you to the brave activists who did this. I purchase ex battery hens for $2 and give them a new life.
Re: 35 Chickens Liberated From West Auckland Egg Farm
I'm in Hamilton, and really want to purchase a pair of ex-battery hens. We have a coop all ready for them (I can't do free-range, because of rental house/neighborhood cat/lack of large coop issues), but at least they'll have more space and nice fresh grass, etc.
Trouble is, I don't know where to find them. Does anyone know where (and how) to get battery chickens in the Hamilton area?
