Tūhoe: Blockade at Paekoa Rd in Ruatoki
Around 20 people are at Paekoa Rd gate. The logging of pine trees was supposed to start on Thursday but was called off. A Tūhoe activist said that they don't want any pine trees on their land. However, they think that further pine trees are going to be planted (instead of native bush). The Waimana occupation will see support from Maungapohatu community too who will be closing the gate to the Waimana block of access from the southern side."A few occupations are going on at the moment. One up the Kaipara at Otakanini-Ngati Whatua taking the whenua back from the kupapa trust, another at Paekoa Rd in Ruatoki blocking the logging trucks trying to tresspass on Tūhoe land. From what I understand, the people of Ruatoki are not allowing the logging company to come in and log the trees in the Paekoa area. This goes back to the original agreements that were not honoured when the trees were planted. There is no argument as such that the pines have to go, old pines like those types become quite a hazzard as they become brittle and it is quite regular to have large branches break off in the wind.
Several members of the Tuhoe Trustboard gave permission to the loggers to come in without consultation with the people and so I think they are learning a lesson or two at the moment about what happens when you try to walk over the heads of that Ruatoki lot.
I am not sure at this time what the local demands are but one thing is for sure that they do not want any more pines planted there.
