New Anti Fur Campaign Begins

The 2007 Fur Free Auckland campaign started with a bang, well rather an airhorn, just after 12 noon at Tammy Girl today (10.2.07).

This North Shore store situated at 29 Hurstmere Road in Takapuna was stocking two jackets trimmed with factory farmed rabbit fur and two jackets trimmed with factory farmed fox fur. The store has been approached twice with a letter, information and DVD about the Fur Trade but does not seem to care about the cruel and inhumane way in which fur is produced.

The store owner claimed several times that the fur was all fake and permitted activists to come inside his store to discuss it with him. The garments in question are quite clearly real and despite repeatedly showing the owner the differences between fake and real fur he would not listen and told the activists to get the f**k out of his store.

Activists continued their demo outside the store; chanting and talking to interested members of the public.

The store owner came out a second time and once again invited activists into the store. Activists explained the cruelty behind the fur he was stocking and asked him to remove the fur from the garments. He then picked up the two jackets with rabbit fur and ripped the trim off (despite the fact that the fur was buttoned on and could have been easily removed). When activists asked if he could remove the fox fur as well the owner replied ‘get the f**k out’.

A few minutes later two local policemen turned up to kindly inform us that we were protesting within our rights and that we should continue to do so but reminded us that should we step out of line the Council has a by-law regarding nuisance behaviour and we could be ‘removed’. The police then went into local businesses soliciting complaints. Fortunately none seemed to be forthcoming as none us were ‘removed’.

All and all the demo was rather successful and we are two garments down and have two to go (-:

Over the past 5 years our Fur Free Campaign has resulted in more than 60 stores nationwide removing fur from their shelves and this year we plan to add many more to this number!

THE CRUEL REALITY OF THE FUR INDUSTRY

Over 40 million animals are abused for their fur globally. Raised in tiny filthy wire cages then clubbed, electrocuted, gassed or skinned alived is what these animals endure for the glamour of the "fashion industry".

Thousands of fur items are imported into NZ from China and other parts of Asia every year and end up on shop shelves throughout the country.

Footage has recently been obtained exposing the cruelty that goes into creating these so-called fashionable items.

Undercover investigators from Swiss Animals Protection/EAST International recently toured fur farms in China's Hebei Province. It quickly became clear why outsiders are banned from visiting. There are no regulations governing fur farms in China — farmers can house and slaughter animals however they see fit — meaning miserable lives and excruciating deaths. The investigators found horrors beyond their worst imaginings and concluded: "Conditions on Chinese fur farms make a mockery of the most elementary animal welfare standards...In their lives and their unspeakable deaths, these animals have been denied even the simplest acts of kindness."
