Reclaim Public Space,CHCH.
On Friday 18 May, people gathered in Christchurch's Cashel/City Mall, at the “Hack Circle” to “reclaim” this public space from the clutches of Christchurch City Council (CCC) and the Business Community. Food NOT Bombs was there for the regular Friday lunchtime food sharing and to support this action.
The “Hack Circle” is an area of City/Cashel Mall where youth gather and is one of the contentious parts of the CCC's plans to “revitalise”City Mall. Another area of contention is High St., where it is planned to put a road back into this pedestrian only space.
There has been a business group “appointed” to manage the area{Central City Business Association/City Mall Business Steering Commitee}, essentially privatising public space. Anthony Gough {a CHCH property developer} chairs this business group and has been quoted as saying that youth crime is out of control and that more security is needed to help make the shopper feel safe {some other members of this group include business owner Richard Ballantyne(Managing Director of Ballantyne) and property developer Dave Henderson}. There has been an increase in policing of this space with Police recently announcing a strategy to target youth, particularly in this area. There has been a scapegoating of youth by CCC and business for the 'perceived' lack of commercial activity. Increased private security and Police presence has seen the number of youth threatened and intimidated by authorities rise, with reports of regular harassment and arrests for questionable offences ranging from wearing of “colours”to using the word “fuck”.
Students from Unlimited Paenga Tawhiti High School, which has City Mall as part of it's campus, occupied the space on Friday and set up static displays informing the public of what is planned and what their thoughts about this were. Loss of public space and concerns about the introduction of regular vehicle traffic were two key points made. They plan to gather every Friday lunchtime to continue informing the public about the “revitalisation”plans and what it really means for the people of Christchurch.
Food NOT Bombs will continue to support this with lunchtime meals. Discussion circles, workshops and live entertainment are also planned.

I hope you are collating peoples responses to the proposed changes.
Another person was run over by a large vehicle in Wellington this week, where their road/pedestrian setup is similar to the proposed changes to City Mall/High St.
Re: Reclaim Public Space,CHCH.
And it was a beautifully sunny, relaxing way to spend the afternoon. Meet some lovely people. Who knew public space could be so much fun?
Lets do it more often!
Peace be,

Yes I know the Dutch, French and Germans know how to car race, party and live it up all at the same time. They make the Christchurch boy/girl racers look lame!

Rank 1, 4 Strings, BT, Chicane, Ian Van Dahl, etc Eurodance symsonic, techno, music is what I got involved with when I was overseas too. I've forgotten about it until I came across it here again. Does anyone know where I can get this stuff in, Christchurch, New Zealand? I seem to can't find any so far apart from what's on YouTube.

Re: Re: Re: Reclaim Public Space,CHCH.
Check out Real Groovy or Galaxy Records and ask the staff there. Otherwise, you're stuck with downloading this type of music from the internet if you're in CH-CH since there isn't much in it.
Re: Re: Re: Reclaim Public Space,CHCH.
If you wish go to http://psurkit.net/ for some info about the NZ dance music scene. There some info about the White Elephant trust that is making a difference in the dance dept for Christchurch, NZ.
Re: Reclaim Public Space,CHCH.
Eurodance/trance/techno kicks butt. This is what I got into when I was doing my OE. Better than the NZ trash. This was the way I raced about 10 years ago – partied at the same time. Girl and Boy racers now days are a pack of gutless pussys!!!!
U got to fight 4 your right 2 party!!!!

good stuff, ignore the spamming.
really awesome the effort you guys put in. chch is so flat and great for bikes and walking - if ppl wanna drive they should go drive sumwhere..to the beach or to visit the west coast or sumthing.
hope the council backs down.
Re: Re: Reclaim Public Space,CHCH.
If people want to drive fast there's pleanty of places to do it in North Canterbury since the roads there are so long and flat, so why do it in Christchurch city? I think only urban trash would want to stay in the city and do it.

Re: Reclaim Public Space,CHCH.
I don’t know what all the commotion is about. So what if The Hack Circle goes? People can still hang out at the other end of Cashel Mall by The Bridge of Remembrance or go to Victoria or Latimer Squares. Being on the banks of The Avon River and/or in a park setting is a much more pleasant environment to chat to friends in than sitting amongst the concert and asphalt. It’s what the youth use to do before The Hack Circle existed.
Re: Re: Reclaim Public Space,CHCH.
The "commotion" is about more than just a road. This issue is about much more, there is the privatisation of public space. This means that a few wealthy businesspeople can control what happens in public space and have already begun to do so with increased security and having influence over council decisions in regard to this space. Also increased Policing(supported by this business group)has done nothing except criminalise and marginalise youth even more than before.
Another issue is that $10.5 million of public money is being spent to support property owners like Anthony Gough making even more money. At the same time more of the cities heritage and community facilities are destroyed. The CCC/KKK are using public money to help the rich get richer while the poor stay poor. This is nothing new but it highlights the Councils plans for the gentrification of the inner city and the further marginalising of the those who currently live in the inner city either on the streets or in boarding houses.

Re: Re: Re: Reclaim Public Space,CHCH.
As it already been pointed out in this thread there’s something more important to worry about than this piece of dirt: the climate crises.
Consequently, I think Al and others are getting distressed over something that is unimportant since the ground that they’re talking about will be underwater soon, so you may as well let the greedy twits develop it. In the end it will be a waste of their time because of the problem already mentioned.
Thus, Al, don’t sweat over the small stuff and keep focused on the bigger picture. As for the others, as already mentioned, don’t worry too much about it since there are other venues to hang out in that are much more enjoyable.
Re: Re: Re: Reclaim Public Space,CHCH.
I think the trick here is not to be drawn into someone else’s neurosis. Here it’s to a point of almost being psychotic.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Reclaim Public Space,CHCH.
I think this is a bit too harsh. Obsessed and fixated on trivial matters would be better words to use. Then again I don't know the person so they could be like what is described above.
Re: Re: Re: Reclaim Public Space,CHCH.
It's a shame to see people getting upset over land that will be a beach or under the ocean soon. It might pay for them to get passionate about global warming instead of petty things like this, drag racing, euro music and drugs.
Re: Reclaim Public Space,CHCH.
It’s a pity that the younger generation car race because it will be that generation that will suffer the repercussions of it the most. Since cars burn fossil fuel that dump untold amounts of carbon into the Earth’s atmosphere that contribute to the global warming/climate change/greenhouse effect crises it will be the youth and younger generation of today that will live with the mess from this type of mindless behaviour the longest.
www.climatecrisis.net.
I advise the people that do drive around in circles going nowhere not be a slave to convention of the car culture, so the privileged few in the car, car audio and oil industry can make a profit from, and stop doing it. Just because the older generation did it is a weak argument to continue doing it. Otherwise, you’re screwed on many levels. For example: needing to shift from coastal cities to live on higher ground or paying higher taxes and rates to pay for dykes to protect those cities. (Since Chch was build on a swamp and on the coast it will be the first to be hit by the rising ocean levels caused by global warming.)
Think for yourselves and behave out of enlightened self-interest - instead of being brain dead puppets to the past and to the captains of industry that make a profit from cars and the of burning fossil fuels!
Re: Re: Reclaim Public Space,CHCH.
The boy/girl racers are zeros not heros since they are fucking up the planet!!!!!!!
Re: Re: Reclaim Public Space,CHCH.
It doesn't matter then if the Dutch car race since they are behind dykes anyway. All they need to do is build them higher and get Belguim, France and Germany to start building them. Too bad for the rest of us though. :-(
Re: Reclaim Public Space,CHCH.
“if ppl wanna drive they should go drive sumwhere.. to the beach or visit the west coast or sumthing.” It might pay to go to these places before they become the seabed because of global warming that driving, automobiles that use petrol, causes. :-) I think: biking, walking, car pooling or using public transport would be the better option.
Re: Re: Reclaim Public Space,CHCH.
It appears you don't have to drive to the beach shortly since it'll be coming to you.

Guess what type of people girl and boy racers are? See for yourself below.

Let Christchurch drown!!!!!
The people in it deserve this demise because all they seem to worry about is inconsequential stuff like: fighting over a piece of asphalt turf, street racing, drugs and if they have music or not.
The stuff below is much more imperative!!!!!

Re: Reclaim Public Space,CHCH.
If teenagers today car race and stuff up the planet in the process then I don’t feel guilty in not recycling by dumping my rubbish in roadside bins and tossing other trash on the road. What’s the point in recycling when the people that will gain the most from it burn rubber doing doughnuts while using nonrenewable fossil fuels?
Re: Re: Reclaim Public Space,CHCH.
No point in recycling when plonkers do this. So I'll be dumping my plastic, paper and glass in the landfill from now on.
CBA Mall meeting
Unlimtied Paenga tawhit students meet memebers of the central business association to discuss planned revitalisation of city mall.
Our meeting was extremely positive, everyone had a chance to share ideas and take part. Feedback on our ideas from the CBA was positive and generally a consensus was met on what to do about the road etc.
Discussion focused on three general areas, the road, aesthetics and youth with youth being the most divisive issue that highlighted a lot of different opinions between us and the CBA, youth and drug problems in the hack was underlined as Paul from Robert Harris citing 80% of his customers having "perceived" intimidation problems with youth. Overcoming this is really a burden upon the customers of Robert Harris to overcome their narrow-minded stereotypes not on the city council to revitalise and destroy an import cultural and social area to appease the few.
A future meeting was suggested as well as regularity, this was viewed as a really positive thing that can start happening to build relationships in our community between our school and business.
Re: CBA Mall meeting
Kia ora - Paul and I were highly appreciative of the opportunity to meet with students and members of the UPT community last week. We found it immensely useful, and look forward to building on this meeting and forging a strong link with UPT. We found the students to be extremely articulate and thoughtful in their comments and feedback. Awesome.

Re: Reclaim Public Space,CHCH.
So what? The concert eyesoar gets pulled down. There are plenty of more lovely places to go to spend time in like what already has been mentioned.
Re: Reclaim Public Space,CHCH.
if this is all what chch gets upset with let da cunts drown!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Re: Reclaim Public Space,CHCH.
The youth of today seem to get passionate about the wrong things. While the world around them dies they argue over malls, roads and business. Who in their right mind would want to sit inside a concert jungle when just down the road there's the Avon River bank, near pubs, to sit on?
Re: Reclaim Public Space,CHCH.
it is interesting that ANTHONY GOUGH wants a bylaw to prohibit private passengers driving down the oxford strip where he OWNS many of the bars on the strip because of the conflict between motorists and drunken pedestrians, to quote him from the press on 22/5/07 "WE THINK IT WOULD BE A GREAT IDEA TO CLOSE IT" and "TRAFFIC AND PEOPLE DONT MIX VERY WELL" yet he is one of the driving forces to introduce cars into a public mall area well patronized by school children, mothers with children and older people shopping etc it is even more interesting that our MAYOR GARY MOORE in the same artical said people spilling out onto the road MADE THE AREA DANGEROUS so HE SUPPORTED the idea as well, given that he is a driving force behind the new mall road preposal. OBVIOUSLY the SAFTEY OF DRUNKEN ADULTS MATTERS MORE THAN THAT OF CHILDREN AND ADULTS SHOPPING OR ENJOYING THE MALL CAR FREE ENVIROMENT. It is also strange to note that he organised a parent meeting to discuss youth saftey after the deaths and injurys at the party in Edgwere to highlight issues of youth saftey when he plans to endanger people by changing a public walking space back into a road. IT IS VERY CLEAR BY THEIR ACTIONS THAT THEY ONLY CARE ABOUT THE DOLLAR VALUE OF THE LIVES THAT THEY DECIDE MATTER and no one else counts,
Re: Re: Reclaim Public Space,CHCH.
Who cares? The way things are going with global warming Ch-Ch will become the seabed soon, so why argue over the land that will disappear?
Re: Re: Reclaim Public Space,CHCH.
You know the old saying: "money talks; bullshit walks"!
Hey, how about the youth that will be displaced if The Hack Circle disappears & the people living in hostels, etc hang out by the strip, smoking, chatting, etc? I'm sure that will piss off some people. Maybe so much that they will think again about pulling down the contested turf.
Re: Reclaim Public Space,CHCH.
Things in Christchurch must be pretty good if this is all what people bitch about.
Re: Reclaim Public Space,CHCH.
the privitisation of public space is a big global threat. discussing it does not subordinate other issues affecting the city's people. if you think corporations ruling ever more of your life is no threat then you would be wise to read your history and think about where things are headed if you do nothing to halt the takeover of people by profit.
Re: Re: Reclaim Public Space,CHCH.
"Privatisation of public space is a big global threat." Prove it or at best we can dismiss this statement as rhetoric or at worst lies.
Re: Re: Reclaim Public Space,CHCH.
Why has our society become so angry and hostile? Are we that selfabsorbed and inconsiderate that we are no longer able to extend basic respect to others? I have become extremely concerned as to how uncaring many New Zealanders have become towards our own kind, let alone to non-human animals. It seems to be getting worse.
It's a typical response though. People find it hard to accept. A recent visit to my old hometown Christchurch had me red flag the city streets as a danger zone. I have always felt safe in the garden city but now it feels like I'm running the gauntlet of a battle-scarred Bosnia full of hatred. Christchurch has cultivate an angry mob mentality in search of trouble. The weekend I was there, a 22-year-old idiot drove his car into a crowd of youths killing two and injuring ten others. Christchurch lacks community goodwill but it isn't alone. Negative media reports of angry people sweep across the country daily. It all seems a bit insane.
