Anyone Know Why A Number of Maori Websites are Down?

in

A number of Maori forums seem to be unreachable. Is this because there are so many people trying to access them or something more sinister? Is there anything activist techies can do to help?

Maori websites that seem to be unreachable at present:
manamotuhake.tuhoe.org/
http://www.aocafe.com/
http://aotearoalive.com/ (seems the domain has expired - maybe defunct?)

In fact the only Maori media site I can seem to get to at the moment is Maori Television which doesn't seem to have any coverage of the raids on Tuhoe:
http://www.maoritelevision.com/

Update:
OK, after a bit more checking I have found Te Karere Ipurangi which has a series of links to stories about the raids on other sites, mainly meanstream media:
http://maorinews.com/karere/

NZ City has a Maori news page but only one story about Tame Iti and that has bugger all about the raids themselves:
http://home.nzcity.co.nz/news/default.asp?cat=1034

The NZ Herald has a number of a stories about the raids including these classic quotes:

"Police Association president Greg O'Connor said today the operation was a "reality check" for New Zealanders who dismissed the threat of home-grown terrorism."

"A roadblock stopped people from going to work, mirrors were used to search beneath cars and police examined under bonnets. People were stopped and had to stand in front of their car and hold a number while police photographed them."
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/feature/story.cfm?c_id=1501470&objectid=10...

Indeed Greg, armed paramilitaries invading communities and homes around the country certainly sounds like home-grown terrorism to me.

If anyone knows anything about the downed sites or has links to Maori reporting on the Urewera 17 raids, please add them as comments. Maori have been disproportionately targeted in this operation, as in many cases in the sad history of the New Zealand colonization. It would be good to hear their story in their own voices.

Re: Anyone Know Why A Number of Maori Websites are Down?

I've just heard that the server which hosts the Manamotuhake and AoCafe websites has been confiscated as part of the raids. Yet another example of the attacks of freedom of expression.

Re: Re: Anyone Know Why A Number of Maori Websites are Down?

that pisses me off so much. I use that site to keep in touch with whanaunga NOT plot against the government!!

Re: Re: Anyone Know Why A Number of Maori Websites are Down?

I wrote the above comment, figured out how to start a new account...

Re: Re: Anyone Know Why A Number of Maori Websites are Down?

Aocafe's been up for almost five years, and had thousands of threads. It was originally a more general forum, then turned more political after the Foreshore and Seabed theft. But there were many many topics there, mostly by Maori, some by other Indigenous people and supporters.

If the police have the server, site backups and database I doubt we'll see it online again. A great loss.

The related AoChat is also gone. It was the only secure online Maori chat room.

Certainly a deliberate (and racist) attack on the freedom of expression.

Re: Re: Re: Anyone Know Why A Number of Maori Websites are Down?

Sorry about the repeated post, it didn't appear the first time.

Re: Re: Anyone Know Why A Number of Maori Websites are Down?

Why was this thread started over from here:

Re: Anyone Know Why A Number of Maori Websites are Down?

That is disgusting and very frightening. Freedom of the press. What a laugh if it wasnt so serious.I dont quite know what to say except maybe,

WHAT NEXT?

Re: Anyone Know Why A Number of Maori Websites are Down?

www.maori.org.nz is up but not as good as ao...FUCK

Re: Anyone Know Why A Number of Maori Websites are Down?

No doubt absolutely, positively deliberate.

Re: Anyone Know Why A Number of Maori Websites are Down?

Aocafe's been up for almost five years, and had thousands of threads. I bet that's all fucked now. Sure they're not giving it back out of the kindness of their hearts. They must be gloating.

Re: Anyone Know Why A Number of Maori Websites are Down?

Radio and tv stations are targeted first in most police or military coups.

Re: Anyone Know Why A Number of Maori Websites are Down?

Aotearoa live disappeared in mid 2004 around the time of the Foreshore and Seabed theft. Now not only Manamotuhake but Aocafe have been "confiscated". They must have HATED a lot of the posts on that forum.

Re: Re: Anyone Know Why A Number of Maori Websites are Down?

Like I had said earlier in the week , create many many sites , keep referencing these sites to everyone , to be able to express ones feelings , hurts etc is a release , its also a awesome way of being updated etc...... create web pages , bebo , myspace , youtube on and on , create them now..... be busy and act inadvance.........swamp the net

Re: Anyone Know Why A Number of Maori Websites are Down?

Is New Zealand turning into the next North Korea?

Re: Anyone Know Why A Number of Maori Websites are Down?

Possibly. Or the next move could be censoring Google like China.

Re: Re: Anyone Know Why A Number of Maori Websites are Down?

I know and the anti-satire rule about televised parliment so stupid. If we can't show/make fun of our polititions when they fall asleep and generally make dicks of themselves in parliment what can we do? It is only an attempt to cover up there incompetence and idiocy. If I feel asleep at work I would be fired!!!! and we let these people run our country, what a joke.

Re: Anyone Know Why A Number of Maori Websites are Down?

its tantamount to gagging, strike that - it is gagging.

MM and AoCafe should grab setup sites on offshore servers, like Hong Kong, which serve a few "deemed illegal" sites. Its a few bucks more but the stormtroopers can't touch ya freedom of speech.

Re: Anyone Know Why A Number of Maori Websites are Down?

STUNNED, literally STUNNED!!! Freedom of speech is a pathetic term that simply does not exist, a public forum that allows open debate and participation, PRIVATE discussions if so be it, is clearly NOT permitted in the times we live in. I have been a regular visitor (and active on occasion lately) of AO Cafe for some years now and learnt some of the greatest lessons in that awesome forum as well as met truly inspiring Maori who have (unintentionally) guided to me where I am today. I am indebted to Rangi and Members for the support, lessons and often thought/soul provoking topics discussed that have opened my eyes on every occasion, (unlike school!) to lives realities! I am stunned!

Our site MIO went down in the week of the raids, it was hacked, coincidence? Are we next to get the plug pulled? The stories coming out of Tuhoe are BEING SUPPRESSED! Only so much is being told to the wider public - WHY? If all Maori Informative sites/forums go down, what the hell are we going to do about it? HIKOI TO PARLIAMENT - LET IT BE KNOWN INTERNATIONALLY - JUSTICE IS NOT BEING SERVED, "STOLE OUR LANDS, STEAL OUR RIGHTS, SUFFOCATE OUR VOICE NO MORE!" - THATS WHAT!

I also agree that multi sites be set up , I have experienced some bizarre moments online , more so in the first two weeks , like entering a site and it tuned to garble 9 I will post ) and last night I was unable until later morning to enter this site had to go around a maze to get in

Part of the garble that I cut & paste , this has happened to me numerous times:

Kia ora!

Re: Anyone Know Why A Number of Maori Websites are Down?

The sites are still not active! Could it be as stated already? or just a simple updating of their websites? Which poses the question and rampid mind games, that have been apparent from the previous comments?
