Toru Voices

The success of Valerie’s book launch has motivated us to hold a speakers evening bimonthly. The first of these evenings will be on the 28th March (this Friday) at the WEA building which is opposite the Art Gallery on Gloucester St. Starting at 7:30pm we will have nibbly foods and three women speaking. International Women’s Day was earlier this month so we have gone with a Women’s theme. There will be a speaker from a local refuge speaking about violence towards women and in particular family violence. Also speaking will be an Ethnic Liason Officer about challenges migrant women face and a woman from the Anarcha Fems will be speaking about radical women and their upcoming hui. Katipo will also have a stall with various pamphlets, patches and books to purchase. We will be taking koha at the door to pay for the venue and food.

Posters and Pamphlets

We have recently uploaded a whole heap of new pamphlets onto the site under our new Pamphlet heading. A lot of the pamphlets are old ones which we have reprinted and a few newbies. We also have black and white posters for sale for a dollar so check them out. If you have any pamphlets which you have written yourself or stumbled across that you think we should publish then flick us an email and we shall see what we can do.

I almost forgot about the moon
$19.00
Author: Selwyn Manning, Yasmine Ryan, Katie Small
Edition: pb
ISBN: 0476009359
Publisher: Multimedia Investments Ltd
Release Date: 5/10/2004
144 pages

DESCRIPTION
Justice and human struggle are themes recurring in many major non fiction investigations, but seldom has New Zealand had to confront such a complex series of issues as what is now known as the Ahmed Zaoui case.

Since his arrival at Auckland International Airport on December 4 2002, Ahmed Zaoui's sheer presence has challenged New Zealand's immigration laws and the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service's ability to accurately and independently acquire information.

I Almost Forgot About The Moon examines Ahmed Zaoui's life, interviews his colleagues, his family, political and international commentators, and New Zealand politicians, and investigates why he is considered a danger by Algeria, why he has convictions in Europe, why New Zealand's SIS believed him to be a security risk, why New Zealand's immigration laws are unable to determine a timely outcome, and offers examples of legal reform that would ensure New Zealand remains a just and fair country where an individual's rights are considered equal to those of the state. Let the debate begin!

Re: March monthly update from Katipo Books

It's nice to see a capitalist venture promoting itself on this internet site.

Re: March monthly update from Katipo Books

Kia ora "anonymous" strange idea of what you consider to be "capitalist." I would say just maybe you don't really know what capitalism is. Katipo is a non-profit workers co-op quite different from a capitalist "venture". In fact as far as I am aware its not paying any of the workers a wage at the moment all the work is volunteer. But hey don't let that stop you
crapping on anonymously as much as you want

dan rae

Re: March monthly update from Katipo Books

Not paying workers for their labour sounds very capitalist to me. And non-profit workers co-op sounds like a way of brainwashing. If this organisation doesn't make a profit how will it continue? Wake up and grow up!

Re: March monthly update from Katipo Books

Well it would be nice if people put their names to comments but oh well. How does it being not-for-profit mean it wouldn't survive? The workers are all people involved in the co-op (there is no division being workers and co-op "managers") hence there is no workers and capitalists, very different from capitalism! The hope might be able to pay people a living wage as it can allow, but i can only speak for myself in that regard.

Re: March monthly update from Katipo Books

No money for work = exploitation = capitalist landowners/fatcats profiting from the labour force.

Karl Marks

Re: March monthly update from Katipo Books

Who is the unitarist despot that has persuaded the workers that they don’t need any money, so that s/he gets all of it while the workforce gets none? I think the workers need to unionise. Karl Marx wouldn’t be happy with this workers co-op at all! If anyone wants to find out what the unitarist ideology means read the following.

Re: March monthly update from Katipo Books

Dan going on about ppl not putting their names to their comments is a typical ploy to distract attention away from the main issue.

Re: March monthly update from Katipo Books

Bring on the Brave New worker’s co-op World!!! Really this Katipo outfit comes across as a worker’s dystopia.

Aldous Huxley

Re: March monthly update from Katipo Books

Hey whoever you are. I haven't been going on about people not putting their names to things that was just a passing comment, I have been addressing the main issue which you still don't seem to be getting. No one is getting paid at the moment!!! I think if you read Marx right then you the division between workers and capitalists=capitalism. There is only workers in Katipo!!! There is no capitalists that has "persuaded" people to work for free. Hmm get it!

dan rae

Re: March monthly update from Katipo Books

Yeah right dan everyone is a worker i.e. equal. Then who makes the business/financial decision of when the workers get paid? If you keep saying that everyone is equal you will start to believe it yourself.

Re: March monthly update from Katipo Books

This dan rae charactered seems like a unitarist/fascist thug in denial.

Re: March monthly update from Katipo Books

Umm, the co-op members would as a co-op decide when people get paid. Really haven't got time for a debate like this, so nevermind believe what you what to believe I guess. As to the last post calling me a facist thug at least have the guts to put your name to a comment like that

dan

Re: March monthly update from Katipo Books

denial is a textbook case of co-dependency

Re: March monthly update from Katipo Books

Dan, are you schizoid or something? First you whine about people not putting names to their commentaries then you say it isn’t important and then you moan about it again. Don’t get upset about it since it is pointless. Karl Marks for Karl Marxs and Aldous Huxley who is the author that wrote Brave New World, which is about a dystopia summarily to the one in George Orwell’s 1984, is all very witty but are still mocking the issue of putting names to comments. As if people put their real names to the remarks made here anyway. So why bring up it in the first place?

Re: March monthly update from Katipo Books

hmm, I'm not a schizoid as far as I know!! I don't think I "whined" about people not putting their names to things. The exact quote (see below) is "it would be nice if people put their names to comments, but oh well". While I think there is sometimes were it is fine to post as anonymous most of the times it just seems to allow people to post dumb offensive and rude comments that they wouldn't dream of doing if they had to do it in person or put there name to it. Witness what I have been called in just this thread so far-unitarist despot (by the way what the fuck is that-sorry don't have time to read a whole lot of wank academic articles-too busy working), fascist thug, schizoid and "in-denial".

anyway leaving that aside unless you still what to talk about it-by the way you seem to be getting quite upset about the issue. Really no one has said anything but baseless things about a workers co-op that they most likely have got no idea how it operates

dan rae (and yes thats really me).

Re: March monthly update from Katipo Books

If you're too busy working to read books then it is no wonder you're closed minded and won't learn something new. :(

Re: March monthly update from Katipo Books

How weird that you ran an online bookstore but you don't read.

Expand your mind and who knows you might learn that you are wrong.

Dan da man

Re: March monthly update from Katipo Books

Just because literature is academic does not mean that it is rubbish since I have used some of it to help me work within a succssful internet bookstore. You, Dan, do come across as a person that follows the unitarist idealogy i.e. it is my way or no way, might is right and I am right while you are wrong. If that is not a trait of a typical unitarist then I do not know what is.

Aden Jefferies

Re: March monthly update from Katipo Books

Pooh poohing academic works only shows how stupid you really are, Dan.

Re: March monthly update from Katipo Books

It's sad to read that dan runs a book store but doesn't have time to read.

Re: March monthly update from Katipo Books

If it wasn't for the academic stuff you wouldn't have computers or the internet to promoted your wares on, dan.

Re: March monthly update from Katipo Books

Obviously there's a few on here stirring crap without even considering what Katipo is about. From what I hear they are a workers co-op. By existing as a co-op ie without any identified 'boss' means they side-step the usual capitalist technique of work structure (and exploitation).

By actively pursuing this method they subvert the current capitalist framework while exploring ideas such as direct democracy and participatory economics via direct action. This is far from capitalistic and infact the model for any real kind of emancipation.

Jared (garage collective)

Re: March monthly update from Katipo Books

No actually I love to read, but I don't have time thanks to having to work in the capitalist system. Once again i don't run any "bookstore"-Katipo is a worker's co-op. Calling academic articles wank was perhaps not the best thing but my point was someone was using an academic word that they didn't explain and then expected people (or me) to go and read a whole lot of articles to find out how they were insulting me. Really outside the uni's most people I know don't have time to do that. Anyway best of luck in whatever you are doing Katipo will continue on doing what it does whatever you think it is

Re: March monthly update from Katipo Books

oh that last comment was me-dan

Re: March monthly update from Katipo Books

I suggest you ignore the trolls Dan.
Especially if you use your real name, you are making yourself into a target.

Re: March monthly update from Katipo Books

This co-op sounds like a scam to me.
