Saturday April 5: Free Tibet Protests Ahead of FTA Signing
Just days before the Prime Minister Helen Clark is due to sign a free trade agreement with the Chinese state, demonstrators will take to the streets in Auckland and Wellington to protest the government's continued silence over the brutal Chinese occupation in Tibet and violent repression of human rights activists and trade union organising.
A
uckland Call Out: Auckland March for Free Tibet not Free Trade
SUPPORT ANTI-FREE TRADE MARCH APRIL 5 CALLED BY GLOBAL PEACE AND JUSTICE AUCKLAND AND UNITE UNION
Meet at Aotea Square, Auckland, 12noon, Saturday 5th April
The Prime Minister has left New Zealand on a trip which will include the signing of a free trade agreement with China in the second week of April. Global Peace and Justice Auckland and Unite Union are organising a protest march to take place shortly before the FTA is signed.
The proposed FTA has wide implications for New Zealand. It will cause the further loss of quality jobs here (particularly in the manufacturing sector) following the lost of hundreds of thousands of such jobs when tariffs were first slashed in the 1980s.
The proposed FTA also comes at a time of intense struggle by the people of Tibet against Chinese occupation. Chinese and multinational corporations are active in exploiting minerals in the region while the Tibetan people live under a brutal occupation.
Meanwhile Chinese workers continue to work in slave-like conditions of long hours for pitiful pay while Chinese and international businesses make handsome profits. The only way this exploitation is possible is through violent, repressive state control of Chinese workers such as a ban on workers organising independent trade unions.
The march will call for:

It is only a few days until Helen Clark signs the Free Trade Deal with the Chinese Govt. Aotearoa / NZ has a unique opportunity to do something positive for Tibetans.
It is only a few days until Helen Clark signs the Free Trade Deal with the Chinese Govt. Aotearoa / NZ has a unique opportunity to do something positive for Tibetans.
We want to give Helen Clark a clear mandate that she should speak up strongly in China and call on the Chinese Government to:
- Free Tibetans that have been imprisoned for protesting;
- Allow a UN delegation and foreign media into Tibet unchaperoned;
- Engage in meaningful dialogue with the Dalai Lama to find lasting solutions to the situation in Tibet.
Peaceful, friendly event. Wear something orange (colour for remembering Tibet). Bring your friends, family, and a picnic. There will be speakers, music and activities. Hear about what is really going on there and what we can do from Wellington.
Events organised by the Tibet Solidarity Network, Friends of Tibet Wellington, and concerned Wellingtonians. Contact 027 314 2884 or tibetan (at) email.com for more information. Check out this website for more info on Tibet: www.phayul.com or any other world news sites.

It looks like the trade deal is going ahead anyway.. where next?
when is the US NZ free trade deal set for?
Re: Saturday April 5: Free Tibet Protests Ahead of FTA Signing
There is no US/NZ free trade deal at the moment, and likely won't be in the near future. Certainly discussions wouldn't even begin until after the US and NZ elections, but likely not even then - NZ is still well down the priority list for the US in terms of the deals they want to make.

the intentionally-twisted medias reports on Tibet issues have blinded most nzers. Most of nzers have never and never gotten a chance to know what REALLY happened on Tibet, and the matter is far far more beyond complicated than most people could reach to think. So, dont be foolished by THE UGLY SO CALLED FREE SPEACH meadia!!!!
Re: Saturday April 5: Free Tibet Protests Ahead of FTA Signing
Look - sit down calmly and actually try to do some research into this that isn't writen by the blimmin chinese communist government. why are you so into them anyway - 70 million Chinese and 1.2 Tibetans have died because of the Chinese government. just relax and don't take critism of the chinese government so personally. I find the Chinese gov hysteria over Tibet really crazy. It doesn't come across well at all and just isolates china further.

Re: Saturday April 5: Free Tibet Protests Ahead of FTA Signing
Free Tibet ?
The slogan for a "Free tibet" is actually a slogan for a Chinese-free Tibet. It is a slogan for ethnic cleansing. The CIA and the Dalai Lama would love to orchestrate the ethnic cleansing of this part of China.
We cant blame the CIA for attacking China, and we cant blame the right wing dalai Lama either. But we can blame the so called "left" for being so easily manipulated by the pro-Dalai Lama media.
I am for a free Tibet - free from the Dalai Lama, free from imperialism and free from liberal do gooders who unwittingly support ethnic cleansing.
Victory to China, Death to Lama!
Re: Saturday April 5: Free Tibet Protests Ahead of FTA Signing
You know anything about Tibet? You been there before?Do you have the right to judge other country's government?
How much do you know about DALAI LAMA?
I can tell you all, CHINA will not allow this, we are all together when attack coming, we love our country, there is only one CHINA!!!
Begging NZ bosses to defend NZ jobs is no answer for Chinese wor
I see that Unite union is lining up on the Free Tibet and anti-FTA with China barricade.
Is this the offical policy of the CTU or is this just the policy of the Unite national officials?
If Unite was to do a little bit of research it would find that NZ workers can do better than beg the Labour Party to defend their jobs.
They can link up with Chinese workers who are making huge gains in terms of wages and conditions, from very historic lows, to a situation where they leave the NZ CTU and the so-called 'campaigning' unions in NZ for dead. They could learn how to fight the same multinationals that face them in NZ and China.
Those workers are fighting for their class and those workers are the ones who will unite with the people of Tibet to support their right to self-determination.
Lining up with the Greens over Tibet and FTA is just a nationalist reactionary patronising of both Chinese workers and the Tibetan people. It is not a class stand but a class collaborationist stand.
Isnt it about time that the Unite officials actually involved their rank and file in taking political stands like this?
