Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

in

It would seem that AAA’s Fur Free Auckland campaign has been attracting some unwanted (and unwarranted) state attention of late. Following last weeks arrest of a Fur Free Auckland protester Newmarket Police were back again this week for another round.

After last week’s success at Modes and Alannah Hill we moved on to Saks, who are once again stocking garments trimmed with factory farmed rabbit fur. All was normal, placard holding, chanting and leafleting until somehow blood was spilt and the chalk came out. The arrival of the Police on the scene signaled all was not well; a conversation between Police Officers stated that there were five more cars on the way (two had already arrived). Talk about overkill; but then Saks is a business owned by rich white people so I guess they do need to be protected from people with morals. After a few moments inside the Police returned and pulled aside an activist who had been singled out for allegedly committing the crime of willful damage. This was later changed to disorderly behaviour because I think even they knew they were pushing it to claim that chalking the pavement was damage.

Three massive Policemen towered over the protester to intimidate her and presumably force some kind of confession. She was asked questions that she did not need to answer and when she questioned this they tried to pressure her into answering them. They seem to think that is some kind of crime to not have a phone number or at least not to give it to them and threatened her with other charges for lying to Police.

Upon release the activist relayed that the Police had tried to trick her into giving them her DNA while they were taking her fingerprints. Luckily she knew better.

While waiting for the activist to be released AAA held a second, rather hurried, protest inside Brave, a store selling fox fur trimmed jackets.

No doubt AAA will be making another appearance at both of these stores soon. There is no excuse for animal abuse!

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

good job again you guys, you know I'm there in spirit. xk

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

excellent work!...again ,maybe the coppers should do what they are paid to do ..chase real criminals!

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

this seems to be all about cops, cops, cops...

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

Yea it would be nice to hear an AAA demo report about a good conversation had with a passerby or something.

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

More animal rights wank remarks above!

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

^^^ i believe you are the real wanker here so ill ignore you

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

Wank, wank, wank - money stays in the bank!

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

I think the question about passers by was a fair question.....
During the short time I took part in this rally there were two serious conversations with passers by. Both these people knew nothing about furr being sold in shops - they assumed it was all artificial, and they had no idea about any cruelty to animals in obtaining their furr. I know this is pretty dim but then most people simply DO NOT THINK about it and DON"T WANT to think - so these rallies help to create awareness as well as hopefully stoping the sale of fur in shops.

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

There are have been so many complaints about Police at demos recently. If there is a lesson to be learned surely it is to have a video camera at the ready.

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

The ironic thing was most of those females protesting had more fur on their legs than the store did inside.

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

It is good that you raise awareness, so many people just do not know the fur is real.

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

It beats me why anyone continuous to celebrate this type of action since it achieves nothing. Nothing is achieved because animals are still been killed for their fur, leather and meat all around the world.

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

What have hairy legs got to do with anything? Look up the definition of irony hunny. And while animals do continue to suffer, these demonstrations have effectively reduced the fur supply from shops in Auckland. Awareness in the community is raised and these protestors at least have the guts to stand up and denounce such cruelty. Good work guys.

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

as good bit of networking woulf be working with people in the countries in which this happens.

good tactics would be targetting the factory farming and animal abuse industry in new zealand, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries that supports it, legally, financially and morally.

Fur is a problem, the local issues are intensive dairy, caged egg production, sow crates, genetic engineering and vivisection and so on...

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

"It beats me why anyone continuous to celebrate this type of action since it achieves nothing. Nothing is achieved because animals are still been killed for their fur, leather and meat all around the world."

This is why some think this is only animal rights wank.

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

"What have hairy legs got to do with anything? Look up the definition of irony hunny"

Well they are protesting against fur while at the same time promoting it by having forests growing on their legs.

Looks like Police oppression though, 3 cops vs 20 protestors.

"It beats me why anyone continuous to celebrate this type of action since it achieves nothing. Nothing is achieved because animals are still been killed for their fur, leather and meat all around the world."

This is one of the reasons why I dumped the AR movement. It achieves a pitiful amount if anything.

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

If people who care give up because progress appears slow, nothing ever changes. Society has always been resistant to change, suck it up and keep going if any difference is to be made in the long run. There are lots of groups working in different ways, and it all contributes.

It is true that in NZ there are many other industries which may be considered more prevalent, but anyone who stands up for those who cannot defend themselves deserves commendation, whatever industry is being targetted. And consultation with the countries who produce fur does happen, however little attention will be paid to any calls to end an industry as long as it continues to be profittable. Therefore encouraging a fur-free NZ is positive and practical.

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

"This is one of the reasons why I dumped the AR movement. It achieves a pitiful amount if anything."

Wow, I bet they miss your contribution too.

To the rest that managed to get out there and do the deed, great work. Don't be put off by the stay at home shactivists, you are making a difference.

To the others that are here to mock their efforts...critiquing is fine, but leave your mockery for the perpetrators of these crimes.

Ask yourselves what have you done to stop animal cruelty before you go hurling rocks and stones at those that are making an effort to raise awareness.

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

FREE ELIANA!!

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

What does raising awareness do - NOTHING!!! The animal rights movement has been doing this for years and still billions of our animal family are been slaughtered daily by our species for their meat, fur, leather, etc. It is time for more creative ways to liberate our brothers and sisters from their whips, chains and ultimately doom!!!

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

raising awareness doesn't achieve much. that's why some think all what the ar movement does is wank.

i think it does wank, wank, wank because they are keeping their money in the bank.

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

Direct action is the best thing to do because animals are liberated and awareness is raised at the same time.

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

Good work guys with the protests, but gotta agree, less of the "AAA vs Cops" ego stuff, keep it about the issue!

All for a fur free Auckland,
fur is for wankers.

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

Hairy legs rock!
Go the fur bikini!

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

Disgusting behaviour from the police. This is ridiculous.

But well done, AAA; I hope you're successful with your campaign.

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

It's sad to see that the AR movement has so much infighting.

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

It is because SAFE are so bloody useless and now with the AAA going on holiday http://indymedia.org.nz/newswire/display/75233/index.php it looks like there will be less action by the ar movement.

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

The problem with the AR movement, is that there is no need for it.
There is no need to "Free" chickens. There is no need to protest outside shops. It's such a waste of time and effort.
If you want to make the world a better place, have a look at the third world. Have a look at living conditions for people on the wrong side of town.
There are people who need some help and support.
You leave them to their miserable fate to instead concentrate your efforts on . . .fur shops. The chicken is going to die oh dearie dearie me. Get a life.
When the last vestige of human suffering and oppresion has disappeared then we can think about having a debate about so called animal liberation. And we can start thinking about the rights of plants - currently we torture kill and rape plants, just to feed ourselves how shocking.
Get real people.

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

I think animal exploitation far outweighs human suffering ,many AR ppl are also active in human rights

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

"its sad to see to the AR movement has so much infighting"
its sad that the same person continually attacks the AR movement in a childish ,petty manner and cowardly

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

WTF? No wonder the animal rights cause isn't respected with weird comments like the one directly above.

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

SAFE SUXS!!!! Just see the drival at http://www.safe.org.nz/Newsletters/Newsletter28/index.html in SAFE words. If its director is drippy as this just think how it operates.

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

With the AAA out of action for a while and SAFE being its usual inactive self i.e. they haven't protested lately it appears that ALF and Open Rescue will be our animal kins only hope.

Direct Action works!

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

no it is you who needs to get real, you dont have any idea about the huge amount of suffering animals go through

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

Safe is ghastly since it isn’t a real animal rights group since it doesn’t measure its success by how many demos/protests it holds or how many animals it saves from exploitation. Instead it measures its success by the increase of sales of its magazine and merchandise and the growth of its income from subscriptions and donations. Thus, this group is a capitalist BUSINESS - NOT what it makes out itself to be! Of course, Safe’s management will try to persuade you otherwise but since it practices nepotism and treats staff poorly by paying them wages way in the low income bracket, while they get higher salaries. All what this shows is that they are unitarist despots. This is just more proof that Safe is a capitalist venture.

Direct action saves animals from exploitation!

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

yep safe gives ar a bad name because their measurements are warped. for more info about them go to http://www.companies.govt.nz/cms/banner_template/OBNAME tick incorporated society and then type in their name. there you can see more detailed info and make judgements for yourself about them.

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

Nice to see Safe’s own material being used against them.

Direct action saves real life!

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

Yeah, SAFE is poor. I lost respect for them when proof came out that its CEO stole money to pay for their personal use some time ago. So I distanced myself from SAFE and hooked up with AAA to be more involved with AR by more poractive action, like demos and protests. Once I found this type of action wasn't enough for me from there I got involved with ALF to really make a difference by liberating some animals from their abusive situations. So SAFE is too corrupt for me.

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

I lost respect for SAFE when I visited its head office in Christchurch. I saw that it is situated across the road from Verkerks, which is a butcher shop, and two doors away from a Subway outlet. (Anyone can see the butchers shop from SAFE’s front door or main windows.) It could easily arrange for protest rally’s to be stationed in front of these stores, at least on a weekly bases, but SAFE is far too lazy even for this basic action. Why? Is it because SAFE has been hijacked by a Dutch family that makes shrewd business decisions i.e. do not upset the neighbours or the public or else it would affect SAFE’s income? Anyhow, it was because of this that I am no long part of SAFE and I have been taking positive proactive action for animal rights as part of the Auckland Animal Action activities for a while now.

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

SAFE suck ,i remember when NZAVS was campaigning heavily in 80S against vivisection and who was trying to discredit them but the then director of SAFE adrienne hall ,since that i have never liked them and see them for what they are

Re: Fur Free Auckland – Two Weeks, Two Arrests

safe does have its way of upsetting folk
