AUSA offers $5000 for citizen's arrest of Rice
Auckland students seek the arrest of a high-level United States official visitingn Auckland this weekend. New Zealand's largest students' association has offered any Auckland University student a $5000 reward if they are able to make a successful citizen's arrest of United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice during her visit to Auckland over the weekend, for her role in overseeing the illegal invasion and continued occupation of Iraq.
"It is hard enough living as a student in Auckland these days without having a war criminal coming to town, so we thought we'd give our students a chance to make a dent in their student loans and work for global justice at the same time", says AUSA President David Do.
The invasion and occupation of Iraq was overseen by Condoleeza Rice and other US officials in her role as National Security Advisor and later Secretary of State (equivalent to Minister of Foreign Affairs).
“Generally when US officials visit overseas they are heavily shielded from the general public, and unfortunately its not hard to see why,” adds David Do. "Rice is the public spokesperson for an illegal and immoral occupation that has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and the continued oppression of the people of Iraq. We believe Rice should be arrested and detained in accordance with the law and tried fairly at the International Criminal Court for her role in these war crimes," said AUSA International Affairs Officer Omar Hamed, who moved the motion for the reward at Monday’s AUSA Executive meeting.
Citizen’s arrests of high ranking government officials have been attempted recently:
· John Bolton, the former US ambassador to the United Nations, escaped an attempted citizen's arrest by author and activist George Monbiot at the British Hay Arts Festival in late May 2008.
· Peace activist Peter McGregor attempted a citizen’s arrest of Australia’s then Attorney-General Philip Ruddock as a war criminal at the University of New South Wales in July 2007
· Campaigner Peter Tatchell has twice attempted to make a citizen's arrest on Zimbabwe president Robert Mugabe.

How does one actually make a citizens arrest?

Also, If you open up some sort of option to have more people contribute toward it - I'll add $50 toward the fund, I'll pay it even for a really good attempt at making a citizens arrest!*

Disclaimer: I mean a really good attempt, like not just shouting "I'm arresting you" from across the road...
Re: AUSA offers $5000 for citizen's arrest of Rice
What about getting a court order like some Palestine solidarity activists tried doing when General Moshe Ya'alon visited New Zealand in 2006?

Not to mention the indefinite detention and torture of 'suspected terrorists' in US military prisons on both Iraqi and US territory (well.. if you count Guantanamo as US territory anyway). Go the citizen's arrest!

Good point.
"have more people contribute toward it"
I'd be into that. Community justice funded through self-taxation. If it spread, could develop in very interesting ways.

Re: AUSA offers $5000 for citizen's arrest of Rice
Citizen Arrests are every bit as legit as the law & order clubs warrants, make no mistake. Grab a bank robber & the pigs will thank you, possibly a reward,, grab a War Criminal and the World will thank you, the reward would be bigger than money.
lezza rice is a war criminal in every sense of the words.
Re: AUSA offers $5000 for citizen's arrest of Rice
I'm an ex-Auckland University student and I have a student loan. Would I be eligible for the $5k? Because I'd fully do it.

Auckland City Police, tasked with the responsibility of care and protection of the Government's international guest, the United States' Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, are disturbed by the Auckland University Students' Association challenge offering $5,000 to anyone who can effect a citizens arrest of the visitor.
District Commander Superintendent Brett England advises that anyone who attempts to penetrate the Police lines of security around the Secretary will not be allowed to follow through with their plan and the consequences of such a security threat could be very serious indeed.
"We are obliged to ensure the safety and security of the visiting guest and we will not shirk from that task," Mr England said.
"Operational planning for this visit has been in the making for several months and there are highly effective security measures in place, so I would strongly advise the association representatives who've put this challenge out, to withdraw it immediately so as to avoid being caught up in something much bigger than they may have anticipated."

Here's an idea. Why don't you and your friends go F@#$% yourself. You are the true criminal for letting a Purely Evil Dictator like Saddam Hussain reign of terror and destruction on his own people happen. I tell you what. Why don't you come to America and I can arrest you on charges of chronic Stupidity.... I would continue, but there isn't enought room on this post to explain the details of you pathetic existance. When you are more mature than a 3 year old than maybe we can talk like adults.....
Re: AUSA offers $5000 for citizen's arrest of Rice
Wow, this story is so appealing because it is what should be done to many of these crooked officails. It really took a lot of balls for Auckland universities to "ok" that. What an awesome sounding place. GET HER!!
Re: AUSA offers $5000 for citizen's arrest of Rice
It would be New Zealand to come up with a slanted political agenda. Look what they did to their Maori population.
