$990 to find out if your children will have a World worth living in!

in

Emissions Trading, Carbon capture and storage, Clean Coal, green certification schemes, carbon positive investments, compliant carbon markets, and voluntary carbon offsetting… what the hell is all this!?, who's planning it and what has this got to do with me? Well, if you turned up to the 4th Australia-New Zealand Climate & Business conference today without a NZ$990 ticket to get inside you would have been none the wiser as to what New Zealand and Australia's biggest Climate polluters are planning on doing in response to the most alarming social crisis the world has ever faced.

However, despite our lack of funding; a few of us from 'Climaction' [an Auckland based group of climate activists] decided to go along to the conference anyway and one individual managed to sneak inside when security weren't watching as the rest of us gave out flyers warning passers that they were entering a deadly greenwash contaminated zone. Our friend inside had the pleasure of listening to some green-industry reps talk about what they're planning to do to save us all and in between the schmoozing, the business card exchanges and auderves Joanna Silver informed "us" about how TZ1 Market (a subsidiary of the New Zealand stock exchange) can facilitate our company's trading in carbon credits which will boost our company's green image and assure our customers the planet is safe as long as they keep on buying our stuff.

Joanna also let us know that the price of carbon credits won't reach a level that will actually encourage New Zealand's polluting companies to reduce their own emissions until around 2030. So it looks like business as usual with a silvery green lining for the foreseeable future. Hooray for marketing!!

If you've changed your lightbulbs recently or decided to get yourself one of those reusable green bags from Foodtown then good on you, but you may want to consider that although New Zealand has one of the highest carbon footprints per person in the entire world, the vast majority of our greenhouse gases are created by massive companies like Fonterra, Comalco / Rio Tinto, Solid Energy and Genesis Energy who have more influence over the New Zealand climate protection policy than you can shake a lightbulb at. So should we be concerned that these mega-polluting giants are the ones who get to tell Helen Clarke, Kevin Rudd and the rest of us whats good for the climate? We certainly think so and would like to invite everyone else who agrees to join us this Wednesday for the final day of the conference.

What? Protest at the 4th Australia-New Zealand Climate Change & Business Conference Wednesday 5pm - 7pm at Sky City. Come tell the policy-makers and corporations that you are more interested in stopping dangerous climate chaos than making money out of it.

Who? Climaction is a radical climate change coalition that advocates system change, not climate change and looks forward to a time when real people are involved in the decision making that affects us all. visit http://climaction.blogspot.com/

Why? The real culprits of climate chaos are the very corporations that sponsor and organise these conferences. Asking these people to look after our world is a bit like asking a monkey to mind a banana

Re: $990 to find out if your children will have a World worth li

Sounds like it could be a fun protest :)
With some friends, I snuck into an event similar to this, we were dressed up just like them. It was the best protest ever! We drank some champagne got on stage and hassled them all for being corporate bastards, then dissappeared into the crowd.We then left the building of our own accord with all our friends protesting out the front.
It was great.

Re: $990 to find out if your children will have a World worth li

Wow, the new Trotskyist split from Socialist Worker didn't just take SW members, it also took an SW front group. Lovely ;)

Re: $990 to find out if your children will have a World worth li

splits?

1. Socialist Aotearoa is not an exclusively Trotskyist group.

2. Climaction was never the property of SW.

Re: $990 to find out if your children will have a World worth li

"CO2 is not pollution."

It is a greenhouse gas however. Great link... puts peer reviewed science to shame... not

Re: $990 to find out if your children will have a World worth li

video: watch worlds most vocal and quoted climate skeptics get annihilated in a long debate with real climatologists.

look up all your heroes and see who pays them

idiot

Re: $990 to find out if your children will have a World worth li

Climate sceptic scientists are bought and sold, along with corporate time-serving serfs like Anonymous #6.

Re: $990 to find out if your children will have a World worth li

human induced climate change is a hoax

Re: $990 to find out if your children will have a World worth li

Greenpeace are retarded when it comes to "climate change"

They post words of wisdom from the likes of James Hansen who in the 70's was pushign the Ice Age fear mongering.

Wake up greenies, Greenhouse gases are a nturally occurring reality & in no way do they threaten our existance.

The only thing we will get out of taking measures to reduce CO2 is a reduction in the growth potential of our country & a decrease of efforts to minimize other real pollutants.

Wake up ya monkeys. FFS

Re: $990 to find out if your children will have a World worth li

The person above this post is really intelligent; I would believe the person over any real scientist. I just love the way use their words, you have to love their logic.

Re: $990 to find out if your children will have a World worth li

It must be Dan Roberts, I think he is a bit paronoid.

Re: $990 to find out if your children will have a World worth li

"reduction in the growth potential of our country"
- bring it on! :)

Re: $990 to find out if your children will have a World worth li

James Hansen is a U.S. government official who was promoting the ice age fear mongering in the 70's.

...On July 9, 1971, the Post published a story headlined "U.S. Scientist Sees New Ice Age Coming." It told of a prediction by NASA and Columbia University scientist S.I. Rasool. The culprit: man's use of fossil fuels.

The Post reported that Rasool, writing in Science, argued that in "the next 50 years" fine dust that humans discharge into the atmosphere by burning fossil fuel will screen out so much of the sun's rays that the Earth's average temperature could fall by six degrees.

Sustained emissions over five to 10 years, Rasool claimed, "could be sufficient to trigger an ice age."

Aiding Rasool's research, the Post reported, was a "computer program developed by Dr. James Hansen," who was, according to his resume, a Columbia University research associate at the time...

So go ahead greenies, listen to Greenpeace who support the likes of Hansen, even list him as a credible source.

Time will tell that the joke is on you.

Re: $990 to find out if your children will have a World worth li

"reduction in the growth potential of our country"
- bring it on! :) "

Would you mind explaining why limiting the growth potential is a good thing?

Re: $990 to find out if your children will have a World worth li

Because finite resources are inevitably outgrown, leading to death.

Re: $990 to find out if your children will have a World worth li

So you want to limit the growth of New Zealand while places like India continue to thrive?

I can't agree with that in the slightest. Let other countries worry about running out of resources. We have plenty - we could have 20 million in NZ before we even thought about limiting growth.

We have an underpopulated country dude. 1 million in our biggest city. We are joke. Our country is the same geographical size as Japan and hopefully someday we'll have a similar sized population.

Re: $990 to find out if your children will have a World worth li

A mathematical proof that there is no “climate crisis” has been published in debate on global warming in Physics and Society, a scientific publication of the 46,000-strong American Physical Society.

Christopher Monckton, who once advised Margaret Thatcher, demonstrates via 30 equations that computer models used by the UN’s climate panel (IPCC) were pre-programmed with overstated values for the three variables whose product is “climate sensitivity” (temperature increase in response to greenhouse-gas increase), resulting in a 500-2000% overstatement of CO2’s effect on temperature in the IPCC’s latest climate assessment report, published in 2007.

The article, entitled Climate Sensitivity Reconsidered demonstrates that later this century a doubling of the concentration of CO2 compared with pre-industrial levels will increase global mean surface temperature not by the 6 °F predicted by the IPCC but, harmlessly, by little more than 1 °F. Lord Monckton concludes –

“… Perhaps real-world climate sensitivity is very much below the IPCC’s estimates. Perhaps, therefore, there is no ‘climate crisis’ at all. … The correct policy approach to a non-problem is to have the courage to do nothing.”

Larry Gould, Professor of Physics at the University of Hartford and Chair (2004) of the New England Section of the American Physical Society (APS), has been studying climate-change science for four years. He said:

“I was impressed by an hour-long academic lecture which criticized claims about ‘global warming’ and explained the implications of the physics of radiative transfer for climate change. I was pleased that the audience responded to the informative presentation with a prolonged, standing ovation. That is what happened when, at the invitation of the President of our University, Christopher Monckton lectured here in Hartford this spring. I am delighted that Physics and Society, an APS journal, has published his detailed paper refining and reporting his important and revealing results.

“To me the value of this paper lies in its dispassionate but ruthlessly clear exposition – or, rather, exposé – of the IPCC’s method of evaluating climate sensitivity. The detailed arguments in this paper, and, indeed, in a large number of other scientific papers, point up extensive errors, including numerous projection errors of climate models, as well as misleading statements by the IPCC. Consequently, there are no rational grounds for believing either the IPCC or any other claims of dangerous anthropogenic ‘global warming’.”

Lord Monckton’s paper reveals that –

► The IPCC’s 2007 climate summary overstated CO2’s impact on temperature by 500-2000%;
► CO2 enrichment will add little more than 1 °F (0.6 °C) to global mean surface temperature by 2100;
► Not one of the three key variables whose product is climate sensitivity can be measured directly;
► The IPCC’s values for these key variables are taken from only four published papers, not 2,500;
► The IPCC’s values for each of the three variables, and hence for climate sensitivity, are overstated;
► “Global warming” halted ten years ago, and surface temperature has been falling for seven years;
► Not one of the computer models relied upon by the IPCC predicted so long and rapid a cooling;
► The IPCC inserted a table into the scientists’ draft, overstating the effect of ice-melt by 1000%;
► It was proved 50 years ago that predicting climate more than two weeks ahead is impossible;
► Mars, Jupiter, Neptune’s largest moon, and Pluto warmed at the same time as Earth warmed;
► In the past 70 years the Sun was more active than at almost any other time in the past 11,400 years.

Re: $990 to find out if your children will have a World worth li

lol, its hilarious that someone is using a paper from a member of the british gentry on this of all forums!
have a look at the background of lord monckton (basically a corporate lackey) and decide for yourself if its worth believing he has anything to add to the climate change debate.
hell, he argued that "there is only one way to stop AIDS. That is to screen the entire population regularly and to quarantine all carriers of the disease for life" back in the late '80's.
As for his article....
here is a critique of everything in it:
http://www.altenergyaction.org/Monckton.html

also from wikipaedia:
"Gavin Schmidt (a doctorate level climatologist)has criticised Monckton's analysis of climate sensitivity as "sleight-of-hand to fool the unwary".[10] Dr. Stephan Harrison criticises Moncktons' articles as "full of errors, misuse of data and cherry-picked examples".[11] The British writer and environmentalist George Monbiot has criticized Monckton's arguments as "cherry-picking, downright misrepresentation and pseudo-scientific gibberish."

here also is a reasonable challenge to Monckton's paper:

Re: $990 to find out if your children will have a World worth li

lol... in arguing your case you refer to wikipedia, a blog article & a guardian.co.uk article...

The critique offered up by the altenergy.org site is far from scientific... more like a play on the language used... these type of sites are a dime a dozen, all desperately trying to argue the case for AGW alarmism, using articles from NY Times etc to state their case.

When you can refute the math model arguments by Christopher Monckton let us know... until then, keep believing the IPCC spin, knock yourself out.

More people are twigging onto the fact that this global warming is all hype. It's politically driven, not scientifically driven & hence is a load of bull.

Re: $990 to find out if your children will have a World worth li

"We have plenty - we could have 20 million in NZ before we even thought about limiting growth."
You may have plenty, and but under your profit-driven hyperpopulation the country would have twenty times as many poor families, more power shortages and more inadequate infrastructure than now. Auckland is overpopulated now, unless you are suggesting filling in its harbours for living space.

Re: $990 to find out if your children will have a World worth li

Auckland is not overpopulated geographically... it's too spread out & the infrastructure is not up to the job, that's all. It's a chicken or the egg scenario, without the population, we can't afford to expand the infrastructure.

Poor families are not a reason to limit growth.

Re: $990 to find out if your children will have a World worth li

finite resources are

also re India, it has extensive pollution, starvation and forms of slavery.. nice one guys.

Re: $990 to find out if your children will have a World worth li

"So you want to limit the growth of New Zealand while places like India continue to thrive?"

maybe you should fuck off to India then

Re: $990 to find out if your children will have a World worth li

Lord Christopher Monckton, the Viscount Monckton of Brenchley No discernable scientific background. Has a degree in classics and a diploma in journalism.

Re: $990 to find out if your children will have a World worth li

So what's Al Gore's scientific background smart guy?

Re: $990 to find out if your children will have a World worth li

$990???

Soon all climate fundies gonna realise that they're not in this climate club - you've been duped - hahahahaha.

Just more proof that global warming (oops climate change) is all about the money...

Who's the ones to have millions to trade carbon credits on European money exchanges???

It wont be youuuuuuuuu - but it will be your money! LOL!
