Re: talk: anti-capitalism and anti-colonial struggles in austral
As an American who cares about my country,I am outraged when accused of being anti-American when I voice anti-capitalist sentiment. To me being American is about loving and seeking true freedom.Commercialism, espeacially the comercialization of nature has nothing to do with individual or collective freedom. When a person is forced to pay for or some how earn resources that stem from nature alone, land, water, et ,that person is not free ! The garunteed accsess to natural resources by all individuals ,regardless of financial standing, ability ,relegion, race and blood relation is the true foundation of freedom.Yes, of course all individuals should be rewarded for their labor, but the truth of the matter is that in our capitalist scociety we are often forced to pay for the labor and services of other people simply because they were allowed to claim ownership over natural resources even before we were born ! A truly free individual has the option of taking what is needed to sustain themselves from nature, meaning therefore that the private ownership of natural resources and the commodification of nature is quite literaly the exact oppisite of freedom ! We are already at the point in human history when the majority of the planets resources have been claimed as the private property of a small percentage of the population.According to the capitalists view of freedom,if even one hundred percent of the resources needed for the survival of 90 percent of the earths population becomes the private property of remaining ten percent, and that ten percent finds that it can make a desired profit by selling only enough resources to support say another twenty percent of the population, then the remaining 70 percent would actualy be legaly obligated to die ! I am very sorry, this is not freedom ! And I am also sorry to say that although the situation is not yet that extream, there are already several million people who die each year simply because of the fact that speculators intentionaly manipulate the food markets in order to increase profits, therby causing food shortages for the worlds poorest citezens. How on earth does allowing humans to starve for the sake of private monetary profits promote freedom !?
I am now 40 years old and every since I was a child I sensed that there was something very wrong with the world about me.I could not understand why ceartain people in my community owned so much land, several cars, vacation homes et,yet they did not even work as hard or as often as many of the people who's homes were falling down, never went on vacation and were seen walking as often as they drove because they simply could not afford to keep their cars on the road.I later learnend that even in America there were children turned away from hospitals who subsequently died simply because their parents could not afford to pay for their treatment.I personaly knew one such child,he died at the age of 11 after being turned away from the local hospital as he was suffering from appendisitis.Henery died enroute to a hospital which was about ten miles or so further from his home than the one which turned him away.I believe now that the laws have changed in order that this kind of thing will not happen, however there are still children with chronic diseases who needlesly suffer and die thanks to ceartain capitalist ideas, ideas such as those espoused by Freidmon who would put private monetary profit before even the life of a child.Suppose for a moment that in order that every child could recieve life saving medical treatment, that we in America actualy did some intentional economic planning in a demmocratic manner as to alow for such a goal ? Surely freedom is better promoted by allowing an impovereshed child to live, than it is by allowing the already wealthy to become even wealthier via the needs and labor of the poor !?
