Auckland Take Back the Night Rally - November 1st

Fight Against Rape and Violence! Reclaim the Streets! All women, children, takaatapui, fafafine, transgendered and intersexed persons are invited to join the Take Back the Night Rally this Saturday night, November 1st, in Aotea Square in Auckland at 7pm. This will be followed by a March to Basque Park. Unite to Take Back the Night!

Take Back the Night will be held this year in Auckland on Saturday, November 1st. There will be a rally (with food and speakers) at Aotea Square in Auckland City at 7pm, followed by a march to Basque Park.

All women, children, takaatapui, fafafine, transgendered and intersexed persons are invited to join us in 'Taking Back the Night'. We ask men to support Take Back the Night by respecting our need to organise independently against violence and to use this time to ask how they can best fight rape and violence.

Take Back the Night is a long-running international event that asserts women's right to feel safe at night and to live in a world without rape and violence. It is an event that raises awareness of and bears witness to the violent crimes perpetrated against women, children, transgendered and intersexed persons everywhere. It is also an empowering opportunity for women to recognise their shared experiences and unite in the struggle for a world without violence.

From the street to the home, in many spaces women, transgendered and intersexed persons are harassed and subject to many different forms of abuse. These include rape and physical violence, the pressure to conform to men's expectations, and in some cases, murder - on average a woman in Aotearoa is killed by her (ex-)partner every six weeks.

By marching, we are powerfully standing together to let the world know that abuse against women, children, transgender, and intersex people is unacceptable, and that all should be allowed to live their lives without fear.

Re: Auckland Take Back the Night Rally - November 1st

Are men allowed to come along and march at the back? Men have been allowed in previous years at the Auckland Take Back the Night marches.

I remember in previous years they have then had their own workshop on violence at the end of the march.

Re: Auckland Take Back the Night Rally - November 1st

I suggest at the end of the march you hang Clint Rickards, no. 1 poster boy for NZ rape culture, in effigy (or otherwise).

Re: Auckland Take Back the Night Rally - November 1st

yawnnnnn!!

Re: Auckland Take Back the Night Rally - November 1st

no them fem nazis hate ALL males

Re: Auckland Take Back the Night Rally - November 1st

I'm a male, and I don't understand why male's feel like they have to be included in this.

I understand the first comment, cool, I think it's a valid question, and would possibly be a cool thing to happen, but I also feel that the womyn should not feel that they have to include males.

We live in a society dominated by male power, and womyn organising to feel safe together in spaces where they otherwise could not is awesome.

And the 'yawning', and 'fem nazi' commenters are really disgusting. Why do you feel so threatened by this? Why not a 'I'm not into it, but good on ya' comment instead? Why do you have to attack people? I also suggest you get informed, maybe READ, or talk to some womyn. And equating womyn trying to stand up against all the crap piled up in them in this society to Nazis is just appalling.

Re: Auckland Take Back the Night Rally - November 1st

I agree with Daniel. As men, we already have enough avenues and spaces for our own voices and domination to be heard (ie everyday!). So I think there is total value in women only events and spaces.

It's up to us as men challenge the kind of crap, sexist comments that have already shown up on this thread.

Re: Auckland Take Back the Night Rally - November 1st

I'm interested, why do you exclude men from being victims of Rape?

There have been a number of cases in the media (agreed not the same number as women) but are they lesser victims because they're of the same gender. For that matter the lesbian sexual assults or are we all Victorian and Women don't do that sort of thing?

Re: Auckland Take Back the Night Rally - November 1st

I suggest that if men want to support wymmin and stand against sexism, patriachy and rape culture, how about organising mens actions where men openly challenge each other about our behaviours as men. After all it is men who overwelmingly are the perpertrators of violence and abuse in society, not only against wymmin but children and each other.

1. When were you excluded as being 'a victim of rape'? Stop attacking other victims.

1. If men want to have a march against rape then sweet go ahead and organise one. The above march has been organised by womyn who are/have been abused by men, so obviously having men there would be crap for many of those womyn.

Do we have to spell everything out for you?! I thought you men thought you were smarter than womyn! Obviously not ;)

Re: Auckland Take Back the Night Rally - November 1st

Heh. That should have been 1. then 2.
Oops :) How ironic.

Re: Auckland Take Back the Night Rally - November 1st

Just curious, is there anything similar happening in other cities?

Press Release

For immediate release

Night to Be Taken Back as a Safe Space for Women

Take Back the Night, a march and rally against violence and rape, will be held this Saturday, November 1st at 7pm. There will be a rally at Aotea Square at 7pm with speakers, food, and music, followed by a march up Queen Street to Basque Park off upper Symonds St.

Take Back the Night is a long-running international event that raises awareness of and bears witness to the violent crimes perpetrated against women, children, transgendered and intersexed persons everywhere. It is also an empowering opportunity for women to recognize their shared experiences and unite in the struggle for a world without violence.

"From being afraid to walk alone at night to being murdered by a spouse, women are subject to a range of violence from the street to the home. We are standing together to celebrate our strength and call for an end to rape and violence," said Felicity Perry, one of the organizers of this year's Take Back the Night.

"The amount of violence in Aotearoa New Zealand is shocking. On average a woman is killed every six weeks by her (ex-)partner, and ten children are killed each year by a family member or members. In 2006, Women's Refuge received over 41,500 calls to their crisis line.[1] This brutality has got to stop," said Perry.

"For survivors and those who face the threat of violence, this march is a reminder that they are not alone" Felicity Perry said. "We call for women, children, takaatapui, fafafine, transgendered and intersexed persons to join us in taking back the night."

Please note, men are asked not to attend this year's Take Back the Night. We understand that most men also want a world without rape and violence and we ask them to take this time to ask how they can best organize themselves to achieve this goal.

Re: Auckland Take Back the Night Rally - November 1st

Just learn to spell the word women properly and stop being so bloody PC about your grammar or sorry should that be gram-person? And if you really think society is dominate by male issues, spend some time in the Family Court. Men get their arse kicked there 10-1 every day.

Re: Auckland Take Back the Night Rally - November 1st

^^^

That's a far cry from the number of rape and abused women in our society, I have to say. And male dominance doesn't start or end in the Family court — everyday life (such as work, public space, private space, marrige, sex, relationships, religion, health, childbirth issues... I could go on) is structured in such a way that men end up with the most say or the most power in those structures, even if we don't know it.

Re: Auckland Take Back the Night Rally - November 1st

I've no issues with spelling womyn, women and take the point that the description of gender is at least a little sloppy if only done by prefix.

I'm not seeking to attack other victims but rather recognise the wider issues of sexual violence being rather wider than this groups aspirations.

Indeed the link for the Family Violence Clearinghouse acknowledges the wider aspect.
Why then are male victims and female victims of lesbian abuse excluded or at least ignored?

Re: Auckland Take Back the Night Rally - November 1st

I'd say for this particular action, it may not be included, but that does not mean to say that what you mention is systematically ignored.

There's nothing stopping you or me to take action against those issues, and I suggest in the future we should — but for now can't we support this particular action for what it is, and what they are addressing? Otherwise you comments just fall into reaction.

Re: Auckland Take Back the Night Rally - November 1st

I have no problem with the women wanting to do their own thing in marching, as a man I think the point they are trying to make is that they should be able to walk safely anywhere they want without fear of violence. If men were to accompany them, it would kind of defeat the purpose of their protest. I can accept that. I despise this silly womin/wymmin spelling thing, but that's just a personal thing because I am an English language purist and I don't see words as being oppressive, it is the way in which they are used which can be oppressive. Good on them for marching. Once a year is by no means anywhere enough though.
