Mass Strike - Rally and March against the McDonald's bosses
As McDonald's bosses meet at an inner city hotel, poorly paid workers will rally outside demanding a living wage.
Wednesday, November 5, 2008
12:00pm - 2:00pm
Meet: Queen Street McDonald's
McDonald's workers for the last month have been struggling for a living wage and secure hours. Hundreds of workers at 28 restaurants have taken over 40 strikes.
Tomorrow will see the biggest day of strikes McDonald's has seen with union members from at least 16 restaurants in Auckland and Hamilton taking strike action and converging at McDonald's Queen St, before marching to the Hyatt Hotel, where an effigy of Ronald McDonald will be burnt.
This rally is our best chance to put pressure on the company to pay a living wage. Come out and support!

Burning an effigy on Guy Fawks is very appropriate . Why not have some fireworks to symbolise rebellion against the norm?

Don't forget Guy Fawks was the only person to enter parliament with honorable intentions.

Why can't the neo-liberals go and play on their own website? If you want to advance market solutions it's a bit hypocritical to use a free, volunteer-run website to do it.

what a joke i find it hard to believe that you strike over pay rates are u not told what u will be earning before u even start at mcdonalds???? so why take the job if u dont want the pay rate sheesh common seance really.or is it that this is the only job you can find maybe you should stay at school get educated so the job you get is a high paying job. it isn't rocket science putting a burger together
Re: Mass Strike - Rally and March against the McDonald's bosses
I was criticising the commentator's advocacy of free-market solutions, not their objection to McDonald's.

if everybody got more education there still wouldn't be high paying jobs for very many. it isn't rocket science. most jobs are low-paid. education doesn't remedy the fact society is arranged as a legalised pyramid scheme benefiting those at the top a lot and the few in the middle quite a bit while leaving very little for the heap of people left near the bottom.

From what I understand Russel didn't fully understand the nature of this specific strike and didn't think it appropriate that as a passer-by he speak. He did come across the road find out about the strike and to stand in solidarity with and speak to the strikers.
Just shows he's not an oportunistic, attention-grabbing politician if you ask me.

You don't need a precise knowledge of the worker's pay demands to go up and say "Hi I'm Russell Norman from the Greens and we support your struggle." Norman didn't do this because he's a capitalist politician who does not stand on the side of the working class.
And what on earth does it matter that he didn't undersand the "nature of this specific strike "?!? Would Norman not have supported the workers if they were too "greedy" or something?
And since when was it "opportunist" and "attention-grabbing" to support low-paid workers taking strike action?
