Why socialists fight for the oppressed both here and internationally

Date: Wednesday, May 20, 2009
Time: 6:00pm - 8:00pm
Location: ClubSpace, level 1, Student Union Building, Auckland University (above the Quad)

The pursuit of internationalism is one the main differences between the revolutionary and reformist outlooks. This presentation will explore some of the main issues of internationalism for the left in New Zealand, including approaches to immigration in New Zealand, the position of the New Zealand state in the international system, and the approach that the far-left must take within the anti-war movement.

Further, it will be argued that the strengthening of the worker's movement and the organisation of a working class party are fundamental to building serious support for progressive and socialist movements in other countries.

"The pursuit of internationalism is one the main differences between the revolutionary and reformist outlooks:

NOPE -- by which I mean not without being a debate topic all on its won. You can't start out by ASSUMING the truth of this statement and then analyze the laft and anti-war movements based upon it.

The "proper scale" of society is debatable. Localism and diversity vrs. one worldism and univerality are things upon which we might disagree independently of our position on the economic left-right spectrum. And yes of course if taking the "localism" side one then has to consider the extent of responsibility to those in other localities, but that isn't really different from having to decide one's responsibilities toward "neighbors" and others in general.

Be real here -- are you REALLY wanting to consider a "one worlder pro globalism capitalist" in any way closer to you than some isolationist communalists who wityhin their community are living in pure communism?
