Auckland University Student wraps up hunger strike.
Auckland university student Stu Colquhoun today finished his hunger strike in support of Tamils being attacked by the Sri Lankan military. The hunger strike which went for six days was to draw attention to the huge loss of civilian life in the recent conflict between the Sri Lankan Military and the LTTE. Stu and the Tamil Supporters group which was recently formed at Auckland University are calling for open access for aid agencys to the conflict zone and immediate action by the New Zealand government to support those harmed in recent fighting.
TV Three interviewed Stu this afternoon and around 30 people turned out to show their support for the Tamil people. As well as students Green MP Keith Locke and Unionist John Minto were present and spoke of the silence of the New Zealand government in the face of huge civilian causalities.
Students including Stu have been maintaining a near continuous presence in the university quad this week. Stu was obviously tired and weak as a result of both his hunger strike and the huge work he and other students have put in to raise awareness about the ongoing situation in Sri Lanka. Student president Darcy Peacock spoke in support of Stu’s actions and feedback from students at Auckland University has been positive with many wanting to know more about the situation in Sri Lanka.
One member of the Tamil community I spoke to expressed fears for her extended family and talked of how there is no regard for civilian loss of life in Sri Lanka with a national holiday declared after the military defeat of the Tamil Tigers.

six days isn't a hunger strike. It's an inconvenience at best. Pathetic really and an insult to all the Irishmen that went on REAL hunger strikes. Soft middleclass attention seeking garbage. If you're going to do something then do it properly, don't just play at it like a little kid having a five minute sulky fit.

Fascinating how shes not happy that the forced recruitment of children by the tamil tigers has come to an end. Interesting how shes not happy that the thousands of deaths caused by the tamil tigers when they prevent tamil civilians from escaping has come to an end. Funny how she isn’t worried why there wasn’t development in the tamil tiger controlled areas when considering she and her ilk sent billions to them.PK must be one happy man. He is sitting on all that accumulated wealth.
The militant tamil diaspora are worried that there refugee status visas will be revoked. And stooges and ignorants like Stu are born every second, so I guess there will always be a “gullible” ear for the cause.
