Maori Revolutionary Syd Jackson Dies
Syd Jackson, of Ngati Kahungunu and Ngati Porou, died on 3rd September aged 68. His tangi will be at Matahiwi Marae in Hastings late this week.
"Syd has lived his life with a totally unswerving commitment to revolution" said Mrs Turia of the Maori Party. He was involved with Ngā Tamatoa in the 1970s whose staunch advocacy for Brown Power laid the foundation for a dynamic period of Māori renaissance.
"Syd has made an enormous political impact on Aotearoa, particularly through his role in the union movement" said Pita Sharples of the Maori Party. "He had the keen intellect to grasp complex issues, a quality which you would see coming through in campaigns such as encouraging Libya to boycott trade with New Zealand, or protesting against APEC."

E te rangatira, e te hoa, haere atu ra ki o taua tupuna, hoki wairua mai ki a matou e whai atu ana i muri i a koe
Such a loss and such a legacy, hopefully younger Maori will be inspired to walk in his foots steps and fight for our Independence again. So rare and so precious Syd never sold out or compromised his views and belief that struggle would free us.
Towards Liberation Syd you will never be forgotten.

Syd was an amazing man. I remember drinking coffee with him; a bear of a man in a bright poncho and turquoise necklace his mellifluous voice laughing and talking about life, whanau and his passions.
I found out yesterday he had finally lost his battle with cancer as I wasn't in Aotearoa when he died and couldn't attend his tangi. He was in my dreams last night.
It was an honour and a pleasure to have known such an honest man.

I had the great pleasure of working with Syd over the last 3 years, and enjoyed every minute of it, I also had the pleasure of getting to know his wife and some of his whanau.
I am going to miss the conversations over a cuppa that we use to have and his cheeky sence of humour.
It was a honour to have known him and to also work along side him.

Dad was a loving father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He absolutely adored his wife Deirdre and their love story lasted for nearly 30 years. Dad lived for Deirdre and I believe he survived as long as he did because of their love for each other and Deirdres' dedication, committment, support and belief in dad . Dads life was about being a family man and thats what he took most pride in. We know what he did with Nga tamatoa and the union etc but the man we knew and loved was so much more than that. Dads life was full of love, laughter, wonderful experiences and family and friends. Dad taught us many things but the key to all the learnings from dad was this - 'Family comes first - love, care and respect your family above all else'. I feel honored to have had such a wonderful father and I will miss him more than words can be expressed.
I pay this tribute to Deirdre for loving and caring for our father and giving him a wonderful 30 years. R

It's been almost 2yrs this September since the passing of such an amazing man Mr Syd Jackson. What an extreme privlege to have worked with such a great leader. A Man of integrity, Mana & Aroha who stood strong and fought for the things he believed strongly in. Syd the father (who loved his Wife & family with a passion) & Syd the friend who's door & heart was always open, I had the privlege of witnessing both whilst under his wing as C.E.O. Thank you to the Jackson whanau & especially to you Deirdre...(those who endure tears in the night shall reap with joy in the morning)...Nga Mihi Nui Te Whanau O Syd Jackson!!!
