Papua Merdeka: 46 arrested and detained after Morning Star raised

On Saturday morning 35 members of the West Papuan community held a flag raising ceremony, with the banned West Papuan Independence symbol, the Morning Star flag, in the town of Fakfak in the Indonesian controlled province of West Papua.

Reports from local Human Rights sources say that the flag raising ceremony was led by ex Political Prisoners Simon Tuturop & Tadeus Weripang. Both men are said to be prisoners from 1982 arrested during the Suharto dictatorship. 46 people are said to have been arrested in what activists believe amounts to a political crackdown in the town. The arrests come at the beginning of the trial of twelve West Papuan students charged with subversion for raising the Morning Star flag during a rally in the West Papuan cities of Jayapura and Manokwari in March. In Canberra West Papuans and solidarity activists are holding a demonstration in support of these students, who now face twenty years in jail.

Thanks for putting this up. The struggle in West Papua is a very important issue that sadly receives little attention in New Zealand, despite being not too far away.

In recent months the Indonesian Military has been making frequent incursions over the border into Papua New Guinea as well. They have harassed and intimidated villagers. http://www.rnzi.com/pages/news.php?op=read&id=40894
