McStrikes Spread to Hamilton!

in

Joe talks to Unite Union organiser and Socialist Aotearoa member Kathryn Tucker from the picket lines in Waikato as the McDonald's strikes spread south.

Kathryn, could you tell us a bit about the mood of the fastfood workers in Hamilton?
They are frustrated by McD's response to their claims. McDonalds have said that they won't get back to us with an offer until sometime in November. It has been 6 months since our collective expired. The 25 cents that was offered is seen as a bit of a joke.

25 cents an hour is an insult. Are the stores in Hamilton owned by the company, or franchisees?
Company owned. Outside in the Bay of Plenty and Waikato, the stores are franchisees. [More]

McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken and the like is the new form of population control, a post modern politically acceptable process of human culling delivering millions of people around the globe every year to early graves.

Re: McStrikes Spread to Hamilton!

Mc Donalds sucksthey should be shut down, in the mean time they should be reformed, increase pay and decrease suffering of the masses of animals they abuse and kill.

Re: McStrikes Spread to Hamilton!

Yes lets put animals above human beings everyone! Fuck the workers, cutesy wutesy animals are being killed! :(

/sarcasm

Re: McStrikes Spread to Hamilton!

theres plenty of other work available in Hamilton ,and dare i say ..more ethical

Re: McStrikes Spread to Hamilton!

To the above comments slagging off McD workers for animal abuse, I suggest you go out and shoot yourselves. That will do much more to further your cause and that of the animals you love so much than taking pot shots at fast food workers on indy

Good on you Kathryn,

Re: McStrikes Spread to Hamilton!

The SS were just workers too, but not footsoldiers for corporations though, so no comparisson really...

Re: McStrikes Spread to Hamilton!

Did you just compare low paid workers to the SS? Are you fucking insane?

Re: McStrikes Spread to Hamilton!

Na just over all this sillyness about what people should be focussing their time on. Typical lefty activists, pull each other down and criticise every action that doesnt suit their POV concerning whats wrong in the world.

There is a place for every view in activism and every effort made, whether conscious raising or direct action, to tackle the madness of the culture and ownership of power embibed in capitalism should be celebrated.

Re: McStrikes Spread to Hamilton!

fucken hell, why do we bother having a comments section on indymedia. 90% of it is stupid slag offs from anonymous fuckwits who get off on pointless abuse. Part of me hopes that most of it is cops and private investigators (who are paid to sit in an office all day reading this site) but alas there probably are activists around who are stupid enough to believe that slagging off McDs workers when they take industrial action is actually a positive thing to do

if there is a dispute between bosses and workers, its pretty easy to decide whose side you should be on,

Re: McStrikes Spread to Hamilton!

Although I agree with you, I think comments 1 and 2 are still valid, therefore this thread of comments has not been a complete waste of time.

Re: McStrikes Spread to Hamilton!

Where / why have all the comments in this thread gone? I agree that most were a bit stupid, but did they really break one of the sections in the ed policy?

If a mass-deletion like this does occur, would be nice to have a comment from the ed that did it as to why they happened...

Re: McStrikes Spread to Hamilton!

Just been hidden (ie can be unhidden by an editor). Some were stupid, few were about the article in question and people were taking offense at them.

Re: McStrikes Spread to Hamilton!

There is nothing in the editorial policy about hiding posts that are "stupid" or that someone takes offense to.

From what I remember of the comments (and I'd agree that most were stupid) most if not all were at least tangentially related to the topic of the article.

It is not the role of editors to hide posts if they feel like it. It is the role of editors to enforce the editorial policy.

Also, according to the editorial policy (available at http://indymedia.org.nz/mod/info/display/policy/index.php ), the following steps must be taken:

"Process for hiding posts containing problems requiring discussion:

1. An empowered editor (active member of the editorial collective) identifies a posting as a problem and immediately hides it, appending a comment to the posting explaining why it was hidden.
2. The editor alerts the editorial collective, notifying it that the post was hidden.
3. At least two additional editors must concur with the first editor's judgement, and none express disagreement, or, 24 hours must pass without any editor expressing disagreement, in order for the post to remain hidden. If consensus is not reached, the post is unhidden."

None of these steps have been taken.

Lets face it - a large percentage of comments on Indy are as annoying (if not more so) as the ones that were on this thread - if you want to change the editorial policy to be more stringent, I'd probably support that. But the current mandate that editors hold has been exceeded here, and the comments should be reinstated immediately IMO.

Re: McStrikes Spread to Hamilton!

I've reinstated all the previously hidden articles as when they were hidden the Editorial Process wasn't followed.
