Afghanistan: The key to stabilisation is getting out
Following Sunday’s attack on NZDF soldiers in Bamiyan, John Key said:
“The troops were carrying out work essential to the stabilisation of the war-torn country” and further that, “the attack would not force him to reconsider the deployment.”
Both of these statements are bizarre in their own way, and further evidence of the kind of political double-speak we should now be accustomed to hearing in relation to Afghanistan.
It was the Provincial Reconstruction Team that was engaged in what was described as a ‘gunfight with insurgents’ not as some might imagine, the SAS troops. The PRT has been stationed in one of the most remote, and therefore theoretically ‘safest’ parts of the country. Helen Clark made sure of that, as she knew all too well that soldiers coming home in body bags would be a very bad look for the Labour government. She, nevertheless, was absolutely committed to solidifying the US-NZ relationship and playing war with the big boys is a great way to score points in Washington.
What is most extraordinary about Key’s statement is that in the 6 years that the PRT has been in Bamiyan it has clearly become LESS stable, not more. When the NZDF first went there, it was not even on the Taliban radar screen. The idea that a PRT is somehow making things more secure for Afghanis is fanciful, as to some extent the PRT must be responsible for the increase in Taliban activity there.
And as far as Key reconsidering the deployment, we can only deduce that he means the deployment of the SAS. Of course he isn’t reconsidering it since the advice by the NZDF and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was that a deployment of SAS wasn’t a great idea in the first place, except of course, for enhancing relations with the Americans. He is softening the country up for the inevitable New Zealand deaths that will occur. The NZDF has long said it is totally stretched to maintain the deployment in Afghanistan, and while some within Defence will no doubt be thrilled with the opportunity for ‘elite, crack SAS’ (as our media likes to call them) to put their skills to use, more reasoned people in Defence know it is a lost cause.
Despite growing anti-Afghan war sentiment, military advice and blinding historical precedence, the US and British governments continue to be the world’s cheerleaders for the continued occupation of Afghanistan. Obama has tied himself to the war in a way that may cost him dearly next election, particularly as the death toll of soldiers rises. It seems that the Nats are all to happy to follow right along hoping that the long dangling carrot of a free-trade deal will finally be realised.
Extensive comparisons with Vietnam have been made in relation to the war in Iraq. It seems that many of these comparisions are applicable to Afghanistan. One thing that is frequently overlooked is the revolt within the armed forces to fighting these wars. With conscription (in the US) the troop situation in Vietnam clearly was quite different. Troops took to ‘fragging’ their own commanding officers (throwing grenades at them in order to avoid combat). Veterans of the Iraq horror have come home and refused to go back.
The one thing that will make Obama, Gordon Brown and John Key ‘reconsider the deployment’ is vocal and active dissent within the military itself. At present, there is considerable disagreement within the upper ranks of the US military to the aims and strategy of the war. When the soldiers on the front lines begin to take action against their use as fodder to prop up an illegitimate and corrupt regime, and anti-war activists in NZ ‘bring the war home’ to the politicians, then an end to the occupation will happen, and the NZDF will be ‘gone by lunchtime’.

Isn't it an interesting use
Isn't it an interesting use of doublespeak by the state to refer to the destruction being perpetrated by the NZDF, as 'reconstruction', in the name, 'Provincial Reconstruction Team'.
Redouble your efforts everyone.
The "war on terror" is deliberately designed in such a way that it can never be won. More people need to expose this war for the fraud that it is. Obama's retarded doctrine of fighting -- and simultaneously funding -- terrorism must end. The real goals of the occupation of Afghanistan are as follows:
1. Increase shares for the military-industrial-complex.
2. Condition the public into accepting torture and the sexual abuse of children (that way, once robbed of our humanity, the internationalists can use torture on us with less resistance).
3. Control of the Middle-East.
This war is a sick hoax. The troops don't even know what the hell they're trying to achieve, and besides: did the Taliban carry out 9/11, the Bali bombings, 7/7 or the attacks in Mumbai? Absolutely not - they're a regional group. Also, al-Qaeda is a completely different organisation which barely operates in Afghanistan - so why don't we just admit that there's no real enemy and leave?
Thanks to the occupation of Afghanistan, now the Taliban are reaching into Pakistan due to their losses in Afghanistan. Great work Obama, just push extremists into another country, and then invade it! (and get a noble peace prize for the good work too).
I'd say the 'reconstruction'
I'd say the 'reconstruction' part of the PRT's name is accurate - it's just that what is being reconstructed is a society controlled by a corrupt, semi-feudal local elite with an almost pointlessly thin democratic veneer.
The main task of the PRT, according to the NZ defence force website, is carrying out security patrols. Despite this, Jim Anderton MP recently claimed that “New Zealand troops are in Afghanistan undertaking mainly community and civic development tasks under the auspices of the United Nations and have nothing to do with any action by the United States…”
Part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), the PRT forms a unit of a US-led Combined Joint Task Force, has a supply base at the US Bagram airforce base and, in addition to New Zealand army and police, contains members of the US military, the US state department, the US Department for Agriculture and USAID. While ISAF is mandated by the United Nations Security Council, the PRT is firmly embedded in US activity in the region.
At very least, Anderton is fudging the issue. If 'stabilisation' and 'security' is a worthy goal of the PRT, why does he feel the need to go on about 'community and civic development'.

Long live the revolution
Afghanistan has a long
Afghanistan has a long stable history that has been interferred with many dozens of times by invaders in the last 50,000 years. Included in their history are dynasty after dynasty attempting to rule the land, success fleeting and temperal. Some of the occupations lasted 300+ years, but each failing and the peoples of Afghanistan outliving them.
In recent times they endured and outlived 4 European invasions from 1839 to the defeat of the Russians in 1989. What is inevitable is that the US has lost this war - I am not saying this as a statement of hope or arrogance, however history should have taught the anglo armies that you cannot defeat Afghanistan with an army. However such is the arrogance of the west and its faux belief in its technology that they have chided themselves that unlike others, they have the ability to conquer an unconquerable people.
50,000 years of living there has taught the peoples of Afghanistan one lesson....time...trumps spears, swords, cannons, bombs, guns, helicopters, smart bombs, UAVs, predator drones and half a million soldiers.....everytime.
The US armies need to not just get out of Afghanistan but their leaders need to be brought up on war crimes charges and executed.
unjust war, illegal violence.
It seems that the lie they are freeing the women has grasped the lying reasons for this aggressive invasion and illegal occupation of Afghanistan. If one was to listen to the work and words of RAWA---the revolutionary women of Afghanistan the plain truth would emerge. The foreign war and occupation is worse on women than was the male chauvinist rule of the Taliban. This is said by Malalai Joya chairperson of Rawa and the only woman elected to the puppet parliament. She was expelled from that parliament for standing and denouncing the fact of its fifty percent sitting of warlords. She explained they sould be arrested and put on trial for war crimes against the people. For that truth she was told to leave and never come back, and since has been threatened with death several times. She is trying to come back and nationally and internationally has gained a following. She has written a book called "A Woman Among Warlords". It is something to read for a glimpse into the nightmare that the present devastated Afghanistan is to the majority of the Afghani peoples living there, and shows in truth the false claim that the foreign invasion and occupation is liberating the people. It is not, it is suppressing the independence and the hoped for liberation which can only be away from militarism in this war torn and weary country. Empire dies hard but will never win in the end, as it does evil things that turns the peoples against it. Worldwide the empires are disallowing the equal electing of woman, and that is the better half of the species, and the true creators of life on the planet. That is the final evil that if continued can only worsen the species chances for livability and liberation on this planet. Double democracy, elect woman equally is prerequisite for the restoration of the matriarchy and the joya of the species natural ecological organic balance and harmony.
It is easy to pass comment
It is easy to pass comment from the comfort of your office, lounge or internet cafe - but think rationally about the alternative here.
If coalition forces were withdrawn imminently from Afghanistan - the Taliban would take control for sure (they are already making ground as it is, and are only just being held off).
The Taliban is a ruthless, extremist organisation who fund their armed struggle through illicit drug trafficing, extortion and fraud. It is true that they didn't directly facilitate the 9/11 or 7/7 terrorist attacks, however they are closely tied to Al Qaida and previously provided a safehaven for Al Qaida terrorists to train, develop and to plan attacks.
I wonder if your opinions would change if it were your family, friends or colleagues who were killed in a terrorist attack?
Yes - The Afghan government is corrupt. But it is the lesser of two evils - and the one that isn't engaged in a world-wide campaign to threaten the lives of innocent civilians.
Completely agree. Pulling the
Completely agree. Pulling the NATO commitment from Afghanistan would be hugely irresponsible. The Taleban would return and with them the intercenine conflict and the horrific abuses of human rights that the world turned a blind eye to before September 11.
While civilian deaths resulting from NATO's involvement are tragic, and to many unacceptable, previous posters should consider whether they would prefer the brutal and institutionalised suppression of freedoms under a Taleban regime. Those freedoms are the same ones that this website purports to protect: freedom of expression, religion and association, and most importantly, freedom from discrimination.
