Two more arrests as protests continue at ASB stadium
Today protests continued at ASB stadium during the tennis match of the Israeli tennis player, Shahar Peer. The vocal crowd of about 30 protestors, had become emboldened by five unlawful arrests on the previous day. Consequently, two further arrests occured for simply yelling into a megaphone.
In an effort to drown out the protester's message, ASB stadium had gone to such lenghts as to hire a live band to perform across from the picket line. Unforunately for them not much could be done once Shahar Peer's tennis match began. Two protesters on a magaphone were quickly warned by police that if they did not stop the disturbance they would be arrested. Officers then moved in, and considerable media presence led to a dramatic arrest.
The police were very intent on keeping any sound device from being used in the area. After a couple of hours, it seemed as though the police were moving in to make further arrests of those left chanting. People by this time had began to disperse so it was decided amongst us to move along before potential further confrontation.
Shahar Peer lost her match shortly after we left.

Brilliant work by all at the demo today! And it worked!!! There is no way Shahar Peer can pretend the shouts - timed to conincide with her about to serve - didn't rattle her. And so they should. It would rattle any human to be reminded that the military she was so proud to serve in was enforcing an apartheid state...
Well done to all, and kia kaha to those arrested. Hopefully, police will get a smack on the knuckles from the courts for that. The cops should face disciplinary action for such egregiously illegal action.

Selective protesting against
Selective protesting against sports events is hypocracy. Any state that commits genocide should face this type of protest irregardless, so good on those activists that took this initiative.
I read McCartens piece on the protests and I think the bit he is missing is that the cops know full well their arrests will not stand up in court. I believe they do not commit these types of unlawful acts with that in mind, but since there is noone to hold their feet to the fire for their actions, they are able to use these faux arrest techniques as an affective method of disrupting a protest and circumventing ones right to protest...when it suits their political point of view.

If you're disturbing the peace, or the police suspect you of committing an offence such as unreasonably disrupting an audience in a public place, the police can arrest you and take your megaphone. They should (i.e. are required to by law) give it back when you're released, unless they plan to use it as evidence against you in Court.
The problem is, if they don't give it back, or it is "accidentally broken" when they are trying to take it off you, there is not much you can do about it. Suing the police will cost more than the megaphone - you might as well go out and buy a new one.

If the police think you're unreasonably disrupting an audience they can arrest you (and take your megaphone) only if you fail to give you're name and address on demand, or if they think you're lying about your name and address. Unreasonably disrupting an audience is a summary offence and carries a fine of up to $200 on conviction.
The other option is if the police have cause to suspect that you're acting in a disorderly manner "that is likely in the circumstances to cause violence against persons or property to start or continue". Then the police can arrest you (and take your megaphone) without anything further.
The rest of what I said still holds though. They should give your megaphone back when they release you, unless they plan to use it as evidence for a prosecution. However, there is not much you can do if they don't or if they break it.

What you miss of course is the obvious link between the megaphone, and that loudspeaker system on the top of mosques. The cops just see this minime version of those mosque megaphone, and they see the obvious link to Al Qaeda terrorism that we all miss.
