Kia ora koutou e hoa ma,

…building on previous anarcha-feminist hui, and learning from WEIRD ‘09 (womyn engaging in radical decolonisations
) …

The organisers of the 2010 hui want to acknowledge that the hui is being organised and held on stolen land. We support the right of Tangata whenua to absolute sovereignty and self-determination, and the return of stolen lands and liberty to indigenous peoples everywhere.  The focus of the hui is on decolonisation and racism,  and challenging white supremacy, white privilege and imperialist forms of organising.

The organisers are delighted to announce that this year’s Aotearoa Anarcha-Feminist Hui will take place from Friday 2 April to Monday 5 April, in the countryside near Te Whanganui-a-Tara/ Wellington, Aotearoa/NZ.

We warmly welcome anarcha-feminists and other wom*n, trans, intersex and genderqueer folks who want to destroy the white supremacist capitalist patriarchy and fight all oppressions. (For more info about anarcha-feminism please see below.)

Also, we would like to emphasise that this year’s hui is open to people of all genders, excluding cis-men. (Cisgender means “someone who is comfortable in the gender they were assigned at birth”, therefore, cis-men are people assigned the male gender at birth who identify as male.)

The weekend will include workshops, discussions, skill-shares, films, fun, delicious food, networking, strategising, socialising, and time to relax and explore the native forest surrounds.

If there is a particular workshop or activity (for adults, kids or everyone) you would like to organise please get in touch – likewise if you have general enquiries or suggestions about the hui.

Children are welcome and childcare will be provided. Please contact us if you will be bringing kids and let us know what you need.

The venue and accomodation are wheelchair accessible. If you have any questions about access or facilities please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

The organisers are currently fundraising hardout to make the hui as affordable as possible. We are aiming for $30 per adult to cover accommodation and meals, but no-one will be turned away for lack of funds. We also plan to provide donations toward travel expenses for those who need it. If you can help with fund raising that would be awesome! – Please drop us a line.

Food will be low allergy, halal, vegan, and kosher. Please contact us if you have any specific dietary needs.

More info about everything on our blog: http://www.afem2010.wordpress.com

Please Register Now – it’s a huge help to us in terms of planning and budgeting. (Registration form below)
When you register we'll give you the venue address, directions, details of what to bring and we'll also post/email you the reader and other infos!

Tatou nga tauira o tenei hui, kia kaha, kia maia, kia manawanui.

A bit more about Anarcha-Feminism:

Anarcha-Feminism (a.k.a. anarcho-feminism, anarchafeminism, & anarchofeminism) doesn’t have one strict definition. If you know what anarchism is and what feminism is, I’m sure you have a vague idea about what anarcha-feminism is. Many discussions on anarchism and gender issues point to the fact that anarchism is or should be essentially feminist. Feminism has many definitions as well. But in this context we mean feminism as in the belief that people should not be oppressed because of their gender.

The reason we believe that the term anarcha-feminism is used is because anarchism is not an adequate word to describe what anarcha-feminism is about, either because anarchism is male-dominated, doesn’t address gender issues to the extent many would like, or because it’s not specific to gender issues. The term anarcha-feminism is also used to specify a type of feminism. Anarcha-feminists are feminists with a critique of power relationships that is often absent from other feminisms.

Anarcha-feminism isn’t just a response to anarchism and feminism, it’s its own entity: an anti-authoritarian, anti-capitalist, anti-oppression way of addressing gender issues- and addressing other issues with a radical critique of patriarchy.

'We support the right of

'We support the right of Tangata whenua to absolute sovereignty' How is this compatible with anarcha-feminism? I thought anarcha-feminism is about getting rid of all forms of hierarchy and power and sovereignty. If one group has absolute control over land and all the things on it then that is just swapping one hierarchy for another. No one group should exclusively own and control land. I can understand anarchists supporting self-determination. But not absolute sovereignty. With little doubt this will provoke a flame war with accusations of evil patriarchical racist anti-Maori cis-manism. But it is a serious subject for genuine discussion.

instead of all this

instead of all this complicated stuff about "cis men", why dont you just say "no boys allowed". it seems to me that a lot of anarchists spend far too much time over analysing themselves with new words and ever more complicated definitions and ways of having meetings, and not enough time discussing why the fuck no one is interested in anarchism.

anarchism is a pretty simple idea. stop making it complicated and maybe we will get out of this little ghetto some of us are stuck in..

oh and I agree with the above poster "absolute sovereignty" for anyone, is not compatible with freedom for all. discuss . . .

cis-men

Using the blanket statement "no boys allowed" would likely exclude some transfolk, androgynous and genderqueer people who otherwise might want to attend this event.

The a-fem hui organisers want to emphasise that this year's hui is not "girls only". We recognise that people of varying genders have valuable experiences, ideas and perspectives, and with our powers combined :) we can make significant progress in dismantling the white-supremacist capitalist patriarchy.

The term cis-men has been used to specify that the only "boys" excluded from this year's hui are those who "were assigned the male gender at birth *and* who identify as male".

There is nothing stopping Cis-men and cis-boys from educating themselves and others and taking action against sexism and other oppressions.

Im not complaining about

Im not complaining about being excluded. my point was that all this jargon is incomprehensible, and we need to talk in plain english rather than in "activist jargon" all the time.

Cis-men?

Cis-men?

For fuck's sake.

I was assigned male gender at birth, but can I come if I can effectively demonstrate an acceptable level of guilt and self loathing?

I'll even hit myself in the dick with a hammer.

The irony of it.

The term 'cismen', which has been imposed on MEN by another gender, is obnoxious. Any anarchafem who thinks she has the right to redefine what a man is is just as bad as a man who wants to redefine a woman, and should realise that her attitude is part of the problem, and sort out her own issues before pointing the fingers at others.

Coudln't agree more

I made the same point myself but made the mistake of trying to do so with humour so unsurprisingly it got hidden before you could say "wild eyed zealots unable to laugh at themselves for fear of rupturing something".

What gets me is the claim to be critiqueing power relations.

Shit like this is nothing more than a plain reversal of power relations of the crudest kind and achieves precisely fuck all.

The revolution will not be conducted by a motley assortment of axe grinding nutjobs and linguistic vandals no remotely sensible person can take seriously.

Chances are they'll remain

Chances are they'll remain blind to the irony of their position, and continue to perpetuate the same old bullshit that they rail against.

They're not the only group

They're not the only group that needs to stop thinking in two dimensional tit-for-tat terms.

Labelling people and fomenting collective guilt ain't anarchism to me. Collective punishment reeks of Maoism or some other such abhorrent ideology.

The continual vandalism of language and the equating of dissenting opinions with abusive behaviour, sympathy for the status quo or out and out treachery I've seen from some of these groups is creepily totalitarian in its mentality too.

It's time more people pointed out that disagreeing with a-fems doesn't make one a wife beating rapist.
