400 students and staff from several tertiary institutions in Wellington marched to parliament today in protest against student debt, for free education, for a universal student allowance, and for higher staff wages. This was certainly one of the biggest student demonstrations in recent years.

Students are currently protesting against the reduction in public education spending all over the
globe. In
Germany the university of Freiburg is still occupied by anti-fees protesters. Thousands of students
went on strike in
Quebec, Canada, last month. And in
Chile, students have
clashed with riot police on several occasions over the last few weeks in their struggle against a new law that will cut education spending.
