Duck Hunting Season Opens Without a Bang!

DSCF7917.JPG
To mark the start of duck hunting season 2007 Auckland Animal Action held a demo/occupation of a South Auckland wetland.

We approached the hunters and attempted to discuss the ethics of hunting and the reasons behind their involvement however the hunters were not willing to comment on their own motivations other than to say “because we do.”

After growing tired of getting nowhere with the hunters we decided to try a new tactic of blocking the only boat access at that point of the wetland. Banners were held over the boat ramp reading “Ban blood sports” and “big guns = small dicks.”

Expecting us to move, two hunters backed their boat in to our blockade forcing us in to the water. After much pushing and shoving the hunters attempted to launch their boat, at this point two people grabbed hold of the boat and refused to let go for two hours.

During this time there were several attempts to launch their boat but we held on tight knowing that the time we delayed them meant less time that they could be killing and maiming.

At times the motor was started with us still holding on as they attempted to reach their mai mai, however we were successful in getting their boat back to shore several times until they finally managed to get away.

Re: Duck Hunting Season Opens Without a Bang!

Australia and Canada, per capita the 2 cruelest
countries on earth?
Australia with 6 million kangaroos killed annually
Canada with a meat industry, seal clubbing
grizzly bear killing, vivisection, the Calgary
Stampede etc.

Re: Duck Hunting Season Opens Without a Bang!

There ar plenty of good reasons for hunting ducks. If hunters didn't do it, DOC would! Ducks are pests to farmers. Sure, they are a part of the environment, which is why there are bag limits on them, so they are not hunted to extinction.

I think you activits should focus on more important things, like how cows are killed to produce hamburgers for McDonalds! An electric shot to the back of their neck? I'm sure they suffer more than ducks that are shot!

Re: Re: Duck Hunting Season Opens Without a Bang!

You say there are plenty of good reasons, and you only name one bad one. Killing something just because if you didn't do it then someone else would is not a good reason. But I fully agree with what you say about cows. I'm most of those activists would also agree with you on that, but it's still no reason to allow ducks to be killed.

Perhaps AAA might consider holding onto the slaughter trucks next time. Maybe you should recommend that to them if you think it would be a better use of their time.

Re: Duck Hunting Season Opens Without a Bang!

The AAA have got it all wrong. All the ducks in NZ have avian flu. The only way to cure it is a high dose of lead followed by a basting in orange at 250 centigrade. Cures it every time. I suspect the two chicks in these fotos might have gotten the flu after this which proves the point - If you don't know how to deal with avian flu - keep out of the water.

WHAT a bunch of ASSHOLES....the bird lovers should have been soundly beaten and charged with obstructing private property.....or even shot...this never would have happened in canada without dire consequences....they should get a life....have a nice day

Re: Duck Hunting Season Opens Without a Bang!

i can tell ya one very good reason why I kill ducks, I like to eat them! Its an important part of my culture, most people eat meat, in order for that to happin animals have to die. Duck hunting is not that inhumane ducks are all killed as quickly as possible, i use a dog to retrieve them aswell to ensure they are killed quikly.

Re: Duck Hunting Season Opens Without a Bang!

You should be ashamed of yourselves. The harvesting of ducks addresses a population issue. Birds that would otherwise die a slow painfull death due to lack of food in winter are harvested by responsible hunters. I also challenge those of you who eat meat, where do you think it comes from of course it must be killed! I prefer my meat without hormones and to have lead a free life in the wild. You disregard safety as well, shame on you!

Proposition:

Shoot them with a 12 guage slug and they'll see that the duck feels nothing at all.
