Migrant worker exploitation, $200 for 70-hour weeks the "tip of the iceberg"

fist.gif
Eight migrant workers from Thailand last week had their work permits revoked and then reinstated after they complained about the illegal conditions under which they were working while pruning vines in the South Island.

The eight workers got national media attention after the owner of the vineyard they worked at threatened Seddon Pastor Brett Duffy for "meddling" in his affairs. The workers had paid recruitment agencies up to $14,000 each yet their employer, Havenleigh Global Services had them working 60 to 70-hour, seven-day weeks, including on public holidays. For this the workers received $200 a week, of which $96 was deducted for rent. Pastor Duffy told The Marlborough Express that this "was the tip of the iceberg".

Cheap Labour market huh! At the same time they are giving free passports to millionaires...

Re: Migrant worker exploitation, $200 for 70-hour weeks the "tip of the iceberg"

Gee, just like working for Telecom. Getting $200 for a 70 hour week while Theresa Gattung gets millions of dollars!

Re: Re: Migrant worker exploitation, $200 for 70-hour weeks the "tip of the iceberg"

Can you back that up with proof (ie a wage slip from Telecom)... or are you just trying to trivialise the plight of these migrant workers.

Re: Re: Re: Migrant worker exploitation, $200 for 70-hour weeks the "tip of the iceberg"

We don't get wage slips from Telecom because it's all computerised. In any case, we get food stamps instead or our arses fucked.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Migrant worker exploitation, $200 for 70-hour weeks the "tip of the iceberg"

You get food stamps! Lucky sod! When I worked for telecom I never got any. Instead I use to use a food bank and get income support from WINZ. Now I've retired to a council flat.

Back to the migrant worker situation - it's outrageous! The employer's that do this are no better than the cunts in charge of telecom!

Re: Re: Re: Migrant worker exploitation, $200 for 70-hour weeks the "tip of the iceberg"

Telecon, TelstraClear, Vodafone/ihug, Slingshot, Orcon etc have migrant workers in their call centres. That is why their service is shit. So I do not know where this trivialise crap is coming from.

looks like a union drive in the agricultural sector could be a go

Here, here!

Re: Migrant worker exploitation, $200 for 70-hour weeks the "tip of the iceberg"

Organising these ultra-precarious workers would be near impossible, but well worth a go. The fact that a Pastor is doing the work of the trade union movement is downright embarrasing.

Re: Re: Migrant worker exploitation, $200 for 70-hour weeks the "tip of the iceberg"

well you should ask local guys what "Mr" Duffy is like. Ive heard he is a pedophile visiting young girls and boys in Thailand at least 3 times this year already. So ask check him out ....

Re: Re: Migrant worker exploitation, $200 for 70-hour weeks the "tip of the iceberg"

The only one the "pastor" is working for is himself.

Re: Migrant worker exploitation, $200 for 70-hour weeks the "tip of the iceberg"

Working for Telecom or any other big business is shitty since only the people on top make any real money. I work for a similar company and I need to collect welfare and on the verge of using a soup kitchen or a food bank.

Still what this article is about is fucked as well. The owner of this vineyard and any others that use their fellow people like this are only showing their true nature: complete fucking assholes! What's the name of the vineyard and what's the brand of wine that they make? More bad press and boycotting this cunts wine may teach them a lesson.

Re: Migrant worker exploitation, $200 for 70-hour weeks the "tip of the iceberg"

I hope the Green Party champion this cause. They brag about that they are out for the poor. And this upsets the clean green image of NZ, the land of the just.

Re: Migrant worker exploitation, $200 for 70-hour weeks the "tip of the iceberg"

Looks like slavery is alive and well in Aotearoa. I won't be taking my working vacation there now.

Re: Re: Migrant worker exploitation, $200 for 70-hour weeks the "tip of the iceberg"

me 2

Re: Re: Migrant worker exploitation, $200 for 70-hour weeks the "tip of the iceberg"

I won't be bothering to visit New Zealand now for my working holiday either if this is the way some vineyards treat employees.

Northern Hemisphere trekker

Re: Re: Re: Migrant worker exploitation, $200 for 70-hour weeks the "tip of the iceberg"

Yeah go trek in your polluted Northern Hemisphere. We do not want you down here.

Re: Migrant worker exploitation, $200 for 70-hour weeks the "tip of the iceberg"

Hey guys, this is just one case where someone may have been underpaid. I currently earn $18.00 + per hour in the vineyards here in Marlborough. Yeah, that's right, approx $750.00 gross or $600.00 nett. I'm not complaining, and I know many others making very good money too! Sometimes I make $22.00 per hour!!!

This is not a cheap labour market at all. Overall it's a good place with a lot of money to be made ... if you can hack a bit of hard work!

Re: Migrant worker exploitation, $200 for 70-hour weeks the "tip of the iceberg"

absolute garbage. Duffy is a self proclaimed pastor with a record benefit abuse. Sacked from previous jobs for shit stirring. Nothing he has said is substantiated. Why are 70 workers still working hapily for the contractor while 8 are not. Of the eight that are not some have already been employed by two contractors and now cand see the original one is not that bad after all.

Re: Re: Migrant worker exploitation, $200 for 70-hour weeks the "tip of the iceberg"

I agree. I believe the Thai embassy has given this contractor a clean bill of health.

Re: Re: Migrant worker exploitation, $200 for 70-hour weeks the "tip of the iceberg"

Duffy is in bed with and other contractors one of which is in his church the other has funded his trips to Thailand. His aim is to poach the Thai's that Havenleigh has trained. He has the immigration and DOL in his hand because he is man of the cloth????? but really he is a ratbag
