Maritime workers take fight to gates of Port of Napier

munz.jpg
Update: Maritime workers are celebrating after a successful resolution of the Port of Napier dispute in mediation yesterday. “We wanted shipping companies to be able to use stevedores where secure local jobs could be achieved. Shipping companies wanted a solution, we supplied one, and the port is back in action as of now.” [ More ]

140 workers gathered outside the gates of the Port of Napier on Saturday (15th Dec.) morning to protest the loss of 85 secure jobs. Mediation between the Maritime Union (MUNZ) and Port Company is still going on but no agreement has been reached. Moves by the Port of Napier to contract out stevedoring work threaten 25 permanent and 60 casual jobs of organised workers.

The actions of the Maritime Union have the support of the other waterfront union, the Rail and Maritime Transport Union, as well as the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions. MUNZ president Mr Hanson says the Port of Napier risks being identified as a "port of convenience" by the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF), which could have major implications for its viability.

Cops erect barriers on waterfront

Late this afternoon police were filmed as they came onto the picket and erected barriers of Hirequip (!) plastic barriers, providing letters saying they were acting as agents of land owners Port of Napier and Ontrack.
The barriers cut across public land and are intended to restrict ability of workers to defend their jobs and community against DIRTY SCAB LABOUR, YELLOW UNIONS and ANTI UNION EMPLOYERS.
Ontrack is owned by the PUBLIC of NZ as a state owned enterprise and Port of Napier is owned by the PUBLIC of Hawkes' Bay thru the Regional Council.
Pickets will continue to Wednesday at least around the clock.
Messages of support appreciated to info (at) portofnapier.info
Sign the petition to CEO Donald Garth Cowie at www.labourstart.org.nz
Any friends in the area are welcome to visit the picket which is non-violent, no booze/drugs, be good to see you.

BIG support, solidarity and strength to you on the picket line. What those scabs are doing is unjust and fucked up.

Keep fighting for your right, wish I could be there. Much love and respect from me. tell those rapist, terrorist cops to fuck right off. I certainly don't pay them to erect barricades, bastards.

Owned by the Public and they pull this one just on Christmas? I think Charles Dickens would have had a few things to say and as for the anonymous person that posted this brevity ..

"bloody unions, shoot the lot of them"

I would like to say "self made man/woman smuggery is somewhat shallow and lacking in empathy for the rest of us who are doomed to skinner cage economics whilst the abacus of the numerologists flicks off the jobs into the sweat shops of the world.

Good Luck to you Lads .. stand by your brothers.
