Adrian Leason, Peter Murnane and Sam Land - the three Ploughshares who entered the Waihopai spy base near Blenheim and used sickles to cut one of the two 30-metre white domes - were denied bail and will remain in custody until at least Monday, 5th May.
[ Update 1 May ]
Statement Of The Waihopai ANZAC Ploughshares
They shall beat their swords into ploughshares, their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift sword against nation; and there shall be no more training for war. Isaiah 2/4
This morning, 30 April 2008, we entered the Waihopai Spy Base near Blenheim. Our group, including a Dominican Priest, temporarily closed the base by padlocking the gates and proceeded to deflate one of the large domes covering two satellite dishes.
At 6am we cut through three security fences surrounding the domes - these are armed with razor wire, infrared motion sensors and a high voltage electrified fence. Once inside we used sickles to cut one of the two 30-metre white domes, built a shrine and knelt in prayer to remember the people killed by United States military activity.

About Waihopai and ECHELON
Green MP Keith Locke is quoted as saying that the base has cost New Zealand up to NZ$500million since 1989. The base intercepts electronic communications throughout the Pacific region including New Zealand and is often staffed by personnel from US agencies.
In 1996 researcher Nicky Hager published an expose on Waihopai and New Zealand’s strong links to the USA-led ECHELON network of six similar spy stations around the world. The United Nations launched an investigation in 2003 to claims that ECHELON had been used by the US government to eavesdrop on UN diplomats and Security Council members. A report published in 2000 showed that ECHELON had also been used by the US to gain commercial advantage for US corporations.
Information gathered at Waihopai is transferred to the Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB) in Wellington and fed unseen directly to Washington DC.

What actions like this and protest in general tries to say is that things as they are, are not perfect. They could be better and we should try and make them better.
Re: Ploughshares Penetrate Waihopai Base Deflate Satellite Dome
She goes on to clarify her view by saying, "Obviously it's just imposing a cost on the taxpayer having to rebuild. That's why I describe it as a senseless act of criminal vandalism".
Yet the cost of the repairs of the tarp are dwarfed 100 times over by the running cost of the US spy base which gathers intelligence for Bush's war of terror.

Kia kaha and well done to all involved.
Everyone else - we need to start the fundraising - these guys are gonna need our help
Re: Ploughshares Penetrate Waihopai Base Deflate Satellite Dome
They should be charged under the anti terror laws as traitors to the country. Hopefully they will get the full term of 14 years. Between Muslim murders seeking heaven and Dominican priest religion certainly seems pointless.
Re: Ploughshares Penetrate Waihopai Base Deflate Satellite Dome
Lets have a whole year off (a break from capitalism) to celebrate...after a year we can decide what next!!
bout time something happened to that fuckin base!

I know lots of people who think that the spy base should not be there and who will support you.
Love and solidarity. x
Re: Ploughshares Penetrate Waihopai Base Deflate Satellite Dome
Fancy having a prime minister who can describe such ethical actions as "a senseless act of criminal vandalism". She should be charged with opening her mouth without engaging her brain first. Hopefully they will never get a term of office again. Between US-backed Muslim fundamentalists and Western social-democrats who quietly back wars and deals with dictatorships government certainly seems pointless.

Re: Ploughshares Penetrate Waihopai Base Deflate Satellite Dome
A small request we've had is to remove the image of the group holding the banner in front of the base - some people not so keen to draw attention to themselves.
Instead of a protest march on Saturday we think a fundraiser might be of far more benefit to the guys and their families - the cost of their action is going to be huge - financially, emotionally, and in other ways. So a simple garage sale on their behalf and/or leafleting people in the train station might be more constructive than making demands for things that won't happen until people are educated more - and they won't get educated until there are appropriate opportunities that engage in constructive ways... the guys could have delayed the event until a sophisticated education and advocacy campaign was in place but that's not their job - it could be ours...
Thanks again - keep the comments, ideas and commitments coming!

we'll do the whole lot! the rally and protest is one part of getting the message out on a busy saturday afternoon ("leafleting people" etc. - as you say). we'll have buckets too to raise money of course! and peace action wellington will discuss contributing financially at the next meeting. and i'm sure more events will take place in welly (even though many activists are already pretty streched with operation 8 solidarity work).
my thoughts tonight are with Adrian, Peter and Sam.
too much Manu, awesome work!

Re: Ploughshares Penetrate Waihopai Base Deflate Satellite Dome
Having established a focus for solidarity, very much like a flag, or more precisely a deflated anti-flag ;-), its now up to everybody to build on this action with solid support, on streets and with donations.
Ploughshares has also shown the value in direct action, along with the corresponding need for secrecy to achieve such tactical goals.

Not much subtle thinking going on here.
You can love the sinner but not their sins, and love the people of the USA while hating their fascist government.
Re: Ploughshares Penetrate Waihopai Base Deflate Satellite Dome
Considering there are 700 million Catholics, probably a much smaller percentage are lunatics, paedophiles etc. than the human race in general.
May as well condemn the whole human race if you are going to generalise in this way.
Re: Ploughshares Penetrate Waihopai Base Deflate Satellite Dome
If it was any were else in the world you would have been shot on sight for an attack like that on a military base.
Too say this base is used to support Bush's war of terror and US agendas shows your complete ignorance.
They should take the cost of repair out of your benefit payments!

Not really sure what your point is. Are you saying that nobody should protest here because they can't in China etc. So you support repressive regimes that stifle protest and want New Zealand to be the same?

Solidarity from within the Belly of the Beast
My one serious reservation regarding this action is that the people got arrested rather than getting away to attack the Empire elsewhere. In the words of Tacitus [extended by Aaron], "He that fights and runs away, may turn and fight another day; but he that is in battle slain [or captured], will never [or only much later] rise to fight again." And, if they hadn't been captured, the movement wouldn't have to divert its resources to defending them.
