Today, May 15th marks 60 years since the Palestinian Nakba or Catastrophe, when 750,000 Palestinian people (two-thirds of the Palestinian population) were driven from or fled from their land and the State of Israel was founded.
On this day, activists committed to Palestinian freedom, will be spending time reflecting on the past, evaluating the present and looking toward the future. Palestinian, Israeli and international direct action against occupation and apartheid has continued throughout the week including destruction of a settlement roadblock in the West Bank. Al nakba is a day all palestinians and other cultures should look at and remember, It is a day we look into aand remember our ancestors and feel with them. I personally feel blessed for my safety here in america and that the israelis know that they are wrong but are continuing to continue untill they realize how much dignity they have. if they were to look into the eye of a palestinian refugee and really look into it, would the israeli feel much dignity there. They have no mind of self consciousness to do what they do today.
My great-great-grandfather was a European Jew. He arrived in New Zealand over 100 years ago, and this was where he died. Many of his descendants have lived in New Zealand since then. I can't and won't use my ancestor to claim a connection to Europe. The State of Israel was created on Palestinian land by people whose only 'right' to be there was based on a loose connection through mostly forgotten ancestors to a land where other people have lived for hundreds of years. Any religious rights to the 'Land of Canaan' were lost when the Israeli people broke their Covenant with God. To any Zionists who think that the State of Israel was a good idea, please name a post-1948 settlement that was built without forcefully taking the land off the Palestinian people who were living there. A Jewish Homeland is simply any country where Jewish people have lived peacefully with others, this is much more true of New York City than the State of Israel.
"The State of Israel was created on Palestinian land by people whose only 'right' to be there was based on a loose connection through mostly forgotten ancestors to a land where other people have lived for hundreds of years."
The state of Israel was created by force with the collusion of many of the major powers in Europe, driven mainly though from the UK. It drove the Arab people into war with the new occupants, ending with Egypt and Jordan slicing up parts of Palestinian land and the state of Israel declaring independence with the left over parts of the Palestinian land.
700,000 Palestinains were displaced and the remaining refugees are what are referred to as modern day Palestinians.
There are many similarities to the foundation of the state of NZ in terms of the British breaking the agreement between them and the Palestinians called the British Mandate of Palestine / Treaty of Waitangi.
"atleast we can all NON JEWS agree the "formation" of Israel was a giant mistake, and is the source of much pain and misery on earth."
What do you mean by that? I am a jew and I oppose the existence of Israel. There is no need for racism, the question of Israel is not a question of race.
TTAWA: On May 20, members of a local coalition of Jews, Arabs and others showed up at the National Arts Centre's "Israel@60" event to let the NAC symphony orchestra and their fans know that there is nothing to celebrate, and to remind them that the birth of the State of Israel was accompanied by the creation of hundreds of thousands of indigenous refugees, none of whom were ever allowed to return to their home
