Moreover, MIO supports the police, known to brutalise Aboriginal youth already and disowns Maori youth as, 'gangs', simply for walking the roads. What next?

There is now the equivalent of a 747 load of New Zealanders heading across the Tasman each week for a better life in Australia, and it seems the pull is strongest for our Maori population.

An estimated one in five Maori now live in Australia, with numbers expected to rise to one in three in the not-too-distant future. The booming economy and the more predictable climate are huge drawcards.
With great pay, a great lifestyle, and what they say is greater acceptance of the Maori culture, who could blame them? There are drawbacks however -- whanau at home often accuse them of turning their backs on New Zealand. And though they are trying to escape the gang culture here, it seems the gangs have followed them across the ditch. So do the pluses outweigh the minuses? Will they stay in the Lucky Country for good? Reporter Rod Vaughan investigates.
