I wasn't able to be there Torrance and so can't comment on the events of the day. But I do relate 100% to your message:

"Symbolic feel-goodness simply doesn't cut it, and unions should be encouraging support rather than attempting to restrict and manage it."

As you say:

"A picket assumes some attempt was going to be made to stop the trucks supplying the alternative distribution centre."

That is my understanding of the word's meaning too.
