Palmerston North Protest. (NZNF)
The Wellington Chinese emabassy was just the start of this line of protest.
The Sunbeam factory is still closing so we are going to be there to make it known that NZ has had enough.
That the only org who will stand for the Working class NZers is still the NF. When the Commies and their other freakish friends show up to be anti us, they will once more show NZ they worry too much about standing against our moral policies and not careing about the future of NZ.

They had an opertunity at the chinese Embasy to show they hate the trade deal too. But all they had was anti NF flyers and some fairy tale posters.

The Palmy protest will be about a month away, so North Islanders will have the chance to get there. Maybe even some of the Southern crews mite send someone. Transport can be organised from Wellington, so we need to just get to the ferry on our side of the strait.

Lets make the workers of Palmerston Know that we care. That we support them and want to protect future jobs.

We have done the protest, we got a good turn out considering we only had a few days to organise it.

about, 30+ attended on our side. the lefties and the other anarchists came along to protest against us with their dyke leaders.

Funny how they say they hate the state, hate the capatalists etc, but then they show up with their anti us banners, they didnt have one banner to protest against the state, they made sure they stayed close to the police, and the more mouthy ones covvered their faces. Most were little boys who admited they were not reealy men enough to stand for what they say.

Over all it went well. The brotherhood was built up and the unity with orgs present was really good as well.

The next one is in Palmerston North when the factory there closes. I bet the lefties will turn up to opose us again to make sure they show the government how much they love them and that putting us down is more important then oposeing the governments policies of destroying our country, some of them made it clear they hate the country.

Think again, any activist gets discriminated against by the police as you become known. Also, I think anyone who was on that march who had their photo taken regardless of whether they were masked, is likely to be a target of these idiots in the future.

For all these comments from people who have just suddenly spotted that factories have been closing down since the shift in policy of the Fourth Labour Government in 1984. The Left have been working on these issues for years, we have been trying to prevent the tariffs being reduced and have had some successes. We have also tried to build solidarity amongst New Zealand workers, and also with workers overseas.

The problem at the heart of this is capitalism, capital will almost always seek to make maximum profits, thus continuing the war between the working class and the elite. This is why jobs go offshore, not because third world workers like being exploited.

The people I met on Monday were clueless about their history and heritage. The post-capitalist society I want to be a part of, enables people to participate in their culture. Here are some thoughts after attending the "counter rally" on the weekend.

When I first arrived to find about 50 people outside the botanical gardens, it actually took me about a minute to realise that over half the people were on my side, and not on the side of the fash. People driving past and tooting their horns may not have been able to realise in time that in fact the majority of the people there were not fascists and could quite plausibly think that the fascists had successfully pulled off a 50 strong picket.

If we are going to successfully fight this scum, we have to make it utter hell for them when ever they dare to show their ugly heads in public. This means doing some good organisation and making sure that we have enough people at the counter demo in order to be right in their faces to the extent that they have to shelter themselves behind the boys in blue. This is not going to happen if we casually sit passing around a joint, while they take up all the public attention and feel encouraged to organise for their next demo. Us Wellington activists need to decide NOW whether we are going to build to counter their Palmy showing or whether we just want to focus on their planned Wellington demo and use that as an oppurtunity to chase the scum out of town once and for all.

The activities of the National Front are a real worry. My branch of Unite was so concerned about he NF's activies in Chch that we fundraised and sent a delegate to the demo a couple of weeks back. The CWG organised a function for him when he came back, and he debriefed about 25 people up here on the situation in Chch.

Of course, there's no chance of the National Front getting close to power. Historically, fascists have only ever been called upon when a capitalist class or a section of a capitalist class feels such a challenge to its rule (usually from an insurgent working class) that it feels that the traditional instruments of the state are not enough, and that a streetfighting machine outside the traditional state is necessary to crush political opposition and in particular the trade union movement. Obviously NZ capitalism doesn't have much need for the NF at present!

But even a small group of committed fascists can severely affect the activites of the activist left. Even simple things like postering, leafleting and selling papers have been made difficult by small groups of fascists who have no other aim than attacking leftists and ethnic minorities.

A couple of points:

Are the fascists actually recruiting many raw kids? If they are, is it possible to argue with some of these kids? I used to know a guy who taught adult education in the German trade union movement. He occasionally came across fascists, and he said that he could make a distinction between the hardcore, 'ideological' ones - the Kerry Boltons, I guess - and those who weren't really ideologically committed but were just caught up in the whole thing.

Paul Spoonley, a sociologist who studies NZ's far right, has pointed out that the vast majority of local fascists grow out of their beliefs. People like Bolton and that Ansley-King bloke are exceptions.

Spoonley's research suggests that many fascists come to see that their politics are a dead end. Maybe we can accentuate that process? In a post on the manufacturing closures thread I tried to point out some of the absurdities of NF doctrine. Perhaps the left could pull together a whole lot of material and produce a pamphlet which exposed NF policies across the board - from their complicity in Holocaust denial to their wacky conspiracy theories to bogus claims to represent the interests of workers? Of course it would all have to be in pretty simple language to get through to the kids that the NF will be trying to recruit. I'm going to raise this idea in West Auckland Unite and the CWG.

Of course there are some people in the NF you can't argue with. The hardcore fascists are dangerous and only understand one language. It might be a mistake, though, to threaten them on forums like this and to present anti-NF protests as out and out confrontations. I think a lot of people who would like to protest the NF could be scared away if they think an anti-NF protest could turn into out and out violence that will involve them. There's simply no way that most activists (myself certainly included!) are capable of fighting hardned fascists in the streets.

In Auckland the Anti Imperialist Coalition/DAWA faced the problem of aggressive pro-war racists during 2003. We were doing regular pickets of the US consulate and it was quite common for aggressive people to approach us and try to make trouble.

What we did, if I remember rightly, was delegate certain people who had training in boxing and/or martial arts to respond to any aggressors, though only in self-defence. Maybe you need to have something similar to deal with any trouble with the fascists? Just a thought.

I can certainly understand that people who've been on these demos might think that even the new recruits to the NF are beyond redemption. You've seen them first hand so you'll know. But even if this is the case, if the NF is indeed recruiting new people then some simple anti-fascist literature might be suitable for people who are vulnerable to their message, but have not yet succumbed.

The NF claims to be targeting secondary schools, for instance, and if we found out where they were doing this we might be able to intervene and give the kids a different view.

It's noticeale that despite its attempts to appear respectable the NF still sends out coded Nazi signals. I had a look at their youth website and there was item called '88 ways to build the movement' or something similar. Why 88? Wasn't there a fascist terror group in the UK called Column 88? My understanding is that with H being the 8th letter of the alphabet, 88 is code for Heil Hitler. I notice that a fascist has used the number in this thread.

The NF leaders have obviously figured out that running around in jackboots and shouting Heil Hitler is not going to win them many followers in NZ. Nazism is loathed here, as elsewhere. People who might be susceptible to talk about independence from international capital or low-interest loans from nationalised banks would be shocked to know that the NF is run by a bunch of hardcore Nazis. An anti-NF pamphlet could feature a guide to their codes which showed the sinister meaning behind '88', the way that 'usurers' is a synonym for 'Jews', and so on. I've noticed that many of the youth who identify as white nationalists or neo-nazis like aggressive angry music. Well so do I but many of the angry bands I like are extremely anti-hate Total Chaos, Red tape and Rage Against the Machine for example. I have worked on a number of occasions on workers rights issues. And have offered concrete help to factory workers in the Horowhenua/Manawatu with getting the difficulties they face in their communities more well-known in government and elsewhere in New Zealand. I belong to the Alliance Party which has been fighting the free trade agenda of National and Labour for years, and activists I work with have been fighting this agenda since it's inception in 1984.

At least 4 of the activists at that demo were arrested for attending a demonstration against the WTO in Wellington - where were the National Front then.

People here claim to be anti-racism but I see alot of racism against white people. I believe everyone is entitled to free speech regardless of how disagreeable others may find their opinions.

There is a disturbing double-standard in the mainstream media and in forums such as this where white groups are decried as white-supremacist but maori groups aren't decried as maori-supremicist. Having actually bothered to read the policies of the National Front (unlike some of their opponents it seems), I didn't find anything that suggestes they believe white people to be demonstrably superior to non-whites. And if they did claim this I would simply be sceptical, I wouldnt be threatening them with violence because I didnt agree with them. If you got, for example, 1000 whites, 1000 blacks and 1000 yellows and tested them at various skills then you may very well find statistically proveable differences. But this would be totally irrelevant to what the National Front are saying in their policies.

And before anyone jumps down my throat and threatens me with violence because I used the term "yellow", I'd like to point out that this precedent has already been set here. If it's okay to call white people white, then it must also be okay to call yellow people yellow.

I also find it absurd that people can say the National Front are not welcome in New Zealand, despite the fact that they're New Zealanders. Collins English Dictionary, White Supremacism: 'The theory or belief that White people are innately superior to people of other races.'

I havnt been able to find any evidence of this belief on the NFs policy page.
