David Wakim

David Wakim, a much loved Auckland activist and a tireless champion of the rights of the Palestinian people, has died suddenly whilst travelling in Namibia.

David was an inspirational man who devoted much of his life to the struggle for peace and social justice.

David was a pharamacist 'half-way down Dominion Road' in Auckland by day. Late into the night he was an active member of Pax Christi, the Palestinian Human Rights Committee and a founder of the Council for Christians and Muslims in NZ.

But unlike many of us with the best of intentions David actually put his political principles into practice in his personal life, caring deeply about the everyday struggles of the people around him and not just some abstract thing called 'humanity'.

He will be sadly missed.

Re: David Wakim

Another one falls in the cause of Palestine's liberation.
Solidarity with David's family and the PHRC and all those who struggle for a free Palestine.

Re: David Wakim

it is truly fitting that david had provided the necessary equipment to provide music at the party for a better world in july, even though he was unable to make it himself. when i tried to give him money for the batteries we drained, he refused saying i should spend the money instead on a campaign against oscmar.
will be missed

Re: David Wakim

David was a truly amazing man, who devoted his life to helping others and fighting for what is right in a world so rife with wrongs. Our love, prayers and thoughts should be with his loving family and friends who will miss him more than words can say. Your struggles will not be in vain, we will carry on with the cause. Justice the seed, peace the flower. Much love xxoo

Re: David Wakim

It's sad to hear the news of David Wakim's death.

He was a tireless campaigner for the Palestinian people, and in an isolated and quite pro-Israel country like New Zealand that is a difficult occupation.

I remember how, at the regular Saturday vigils he used to help organise, he used to encourage me and other members of the Anti Imperialist Coalition and similar groups to speak on the open mike, even though he disagreed with some of our views about the situation in the Middle East. His commitment to the cause meant that he was able to work constructively with people with a range of political viewpoints, and I'm sure they'll all be feeling sad about his passing.

Re: David Wakim

David will always remain my inspiration in the fight for justice as I have yet to see one so passionate, devoted and kind towards other people. I feel overwhelmed with grief and sorrow. My love, support and prayers go to David's similarly amazing family.

We will miss you greatly David, Rest in Peace.

Re: David Wakim

David is one of those people who really made a difference not only in terms of his tireless furtherance of social justice campaigns and the Palestinian cause, but also in terms of having the kind of comradely spirit that inspires effective activism and solidarity in difference.

I will greatly miss David's presence with future social justice campaigns, and the pleasure of bumping into him in other places, always ready with smile and a hug. Much love to Janfrie and the family.

Re: David Wakim

I never knew David Wakim but I saw him speak once and I liked what I heard.
Unfortunatly thats all I can say about him from a personal point of view, but from what I've seen (including the other comments here) he was truely a great man.
Rest in Peace David.

Re: David Wakim

I didn't really know David that well but I remember his excellent inspiring speeches at anti-war demos in support of the Palestinian people and social justice in general.

He would be at every human rights meeting I'd go to, whether it be on East Timor, West Papua, Chile or basically anywhere else in the World where people were struggling for dignity and justice.

David you will greatly missed.

Re: David Wakim

I am truly saddened to hear about David. He truly was inspiring in many ways and a blessing to our society. May he rest in peace and I pray for his families strength through this difficult time.

Re: David Wakim

My main impression of David is that he was always such a joyful person. He was so proud of his family and he had every reason to be. I think he must have been one of the proudest parents at our completion ceremony when Suzy finished pharmacy school.
My love to all the family.
May he rest in peace after a life well lived.

Re: David Wakim

Its hard to believe that it has been ten years since I first met David. He was a kind and generous man.
He never stopped fighting for what was right.

My condolences to the family.

Re: David Wakim

Re: David Wakim

He was a very dedicated man, I wish I had the chance to get to know him better. He will be missed by many.

Re: David Wakim

we lost a man couldn't be replaced by any one. sure every one is sad..

Re: David Wakim

it's hard to explain how i felt when i heard the news about david. it's like there's now a gaping hole in the world that will never be filled. there are very few peopole i've met who have shown so much commitment to peace and social justice. he was so giving of his time, money, encouragement. a leader, a man of common sense, passion and commitment. a quiet achiever and unsung hero. new zealand will not be the same without him.

condolences to the wakim family. our thoughts and prayers are with you at this very difficult time.

Re: David Wakim

David not only worked for justice on a global level but also within his work for the down drodden and poor that crossed his path as a pharmacist. Many a time I have heard him say a kind word, offer advise and help to some interesting characters that visited the pharmacy. Thank you David for your kindness in helping me and keeping me abreast with health issues and also the cause of the Palestinian people. You were inspiring. Your work will continue.

Re: David Wakim

May he rest in the Peace of Christ!

I know another guy, you probably have seen in various places, but that’s it. He’s just an ordinary bloke. He walks among the poor and the sinners, and society condemns him. They say how can a man of God be in the company of evil?

I guess the good people of society have become too good for the ordinary, but never for him. He is with the least among you.

Blessed are the falsely accused, for theirs is the kingdom of God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they are the children of God.

Re: David Wakim

Since the latter part of the Gulf Crisis Committee till his passing,I was privileged and honoured to have known David Wakim. Did'nt always see eye to eye politically, but liberation and justice were always in his heart. His integrity and genuine love of humanity, are his legacies to the world. Aotearoa was truely blessed by his presence.

Re: David Wakim

Dear all and Failte, David's funeral, a requiem Mass in one of Sydney's central Catholic churches was scheduled for today in Australia.

There will be a memorial on Saturday next, at St. Benedicts Church, Newton, Auckland at 11 o'clock I think. I will check and amend the time here if that's not right. What will we do without him? Praying for all his family and friends at this time of loss as we adjust to the fact. The peace and justice work will continue.
Peace to you all, Salaam alekum, shalom, pax.

Re: David Wakim

In behalf of the Chilean exiles living in New Zealand i like to add that we have lost a great companero of the struggles for a more just world. We were together in many meetings and talks and he knew the issues extrematelly well.I couldnt be present at the service last saturday but please pass on our solidarity to his family.
The struggle will continue comrade David, wherever we are, against the machinery of Terror.
That is our compromise.

Re: David Wakim

To a life well lived, a big heart, works that don't go unoticed and echo on always, an example to all.
