The protest was organised by the Council of Trade Union (CTU). Members from a wide range of unions (Maritime Union, AUS, PSA, Unite!, CLAW, EPMU, SFWU), socialist groups (ACA, SWO/Workers Charter) and anarchists (some from the
Wildcat Anarchist Collective) rallied for over one hour. ‘Brass Razoo Solidarity Band’ played for the crowd.
Speakers included Ross Wilson (president of the CTU) and Green Party MP Keith Locke.
Anarchists were there with several flags, a banner (“No War but the Class War!”) and Wildcat handed out a leaflet in which they attacked the CTU for refusing to demonstrate against the fact that 600 Air New Zealand workers are being fired by Helen Clark’s government.
A group of anarchists got in trouble with the police when they walked back towards town because they preferred to walk on the road. Police threats of arrests for obstruction were replied with chants – “No Justice, No Peace – Abolish the Police!”. One anarchist was repeatedly called a ‘cock’ by a cop.

Re: Wellington: Solidarity Demonstration
"the bosses need us but we dont need them"
Re: Wellington: Solidarity Demonstration
I agree with that line squirrel - I told a construction worker that he should throw his boss off the top floor of a building he was working on after the demo - sadly, he didn't seem to enthusiastic about that.
Re: Wellington: Solidarity Demonstration with Australian Workers
I would say 200-250. Rallies can often look smaller than they are depending on the venue.
Re: Wellington: Solidarity Demonstration with Australian Workers
Thanks for posting this article, but I can't quite see how 6 anarchists strolling down the street after a demo exchanging abuse with the cops is actually news...
Workers rally against Aussie bill
SUPPORTING THE AUSSIE WORKER: Green MP Keith Locke protests outside the Australian high commission in Wellington against new industrial relations laws across the Tasman. Hundreds of thousands of workers in Australia marched in massive demonstrations yesterday.
]
New Zealand Council of Trade Unions president Ross Wilson said yesterday Australia's proposed new industrial relations laws would allow employers in workplaces with fewer than 100 employees to fire people at will.
Employers could force workers on to individual contracts, even if most wanted a collective. It was a "thinly veiled attempt to silence the rights of workers to organise collectively in unions".
"This sort of approach to workplace relations is what New Zealand narrowly avoided in the form of a Don Brash-led government."
Green MP Keith Locke said the proposed labour laws could hurt New Zealand workers.
"If they get away with it in Australia then it will come across here for the workers in the companies that are owned in Australia, and if it goes through in Australia, we will have a much harder fight in Parliament."
About 10 policemen guarded the commission's gates but the protest passed without incident. Mr Wilson delivered a letter to the high commissioner expressing unionists' concerns.
In Auckland, 250 workers rallied outside the Australian consulate.
But Business New Zealand chief executive Phil O'Reilly said the WorkChoices bill would give Australia a competitive edge by removing red tape from individual contracts, protecting small firms from unfair dismissal claims and protecting new projects and industries from industrial action during their start-up period.

Re: Wellington: Solidarity Demonstration with Australian Workers
(210,000 ppl in Melbourne. One wonders how many workplaces elected to stopwork for the live link up?)
These laws are a dangerous slippery slope if they do come in, we have to fight them with all we have, and yes, this posted comment can be called "seditios" over here now. What was I saying about dangerous slippery slopes?
