“McDonald’s is using their position as a powerful corporation with great financial resources to intimidate their workforce which is made up of young and vulnerable workers. They have orchestrated a systematic campaign to obstruct their employees from joining their union. The company has circulated a written proposal circulated to all stores and that an increase will only be paid to non-members. Some Unite members have been told that they will get the early increase if they resign from the union." said Unite spokesperson Simon Oosterman.
McDonalds has responded by claiming that Unite's actions so far have been damaging to their brand and that they have no intention of rewarding such behaviour in their employees.
Over 100 Unite workers and supporters are expected at a protest strike tonight. [Press Release]
UPDATE: 200 rallied on Queen Street with striking McDonalds workers on Friday night, declaring that they were proud to be union. [ Press Release]

We are better off getting people to boycott McDonalds and KFC - the people working there can go to hell.

Re: Minimum wage workers take McDonalds to Court
While I sympathise with your enmity towards McVomits I think you have made the critical mistake of ignoring the class distinctions within the organisation. The people driving the socially and environmentally destructive activities we both abhor are at the top of the class pyramid. The workers - for whom there are limited opportunities to work for socially conscious organisations - are at the bottom.
Strategically, helping workers to struggle for better pay and conditions is valuable for a number of reasons:
- it is disruptive to the smooth running of the business
- it creates negative publicity for McVs which adds weight to the arguments of the McLibel campaign
- it builds the confidence of often young workers who have been ground down by a corporatised education system into believing there is no effective way to defend their rights
- it creates an opportunity for activists and McWorkers to share knowledge and perspectives in common struggle
This last point is particularly important. Many Unite organisers are university educated and have been involved in full time activism for many years. They have a lot to offer the workers in building their understanding of political philosophy, strategy and tactics. On the other hand these same activists for the same reason are often sheltered from the political realities of the working poor. In this respect they have as much if not more to learn from the fast food workers and the other minimum wage workers Unite is organising.
A final point: the SupersizeMyPay.com campaign has done more is two years to force change in the way fast food multinationals do business here than ten years of anticapitalist protesting.
Re: Minimum wage workers take McDonalds to Court
Re: Minimum wage workers take McDonalds to Court
Re: Minimum wage workers take McDonalds to Court
But large numbers of people, especially young people, do continue to buy there and work there despite ten years of McLibel campaigns etc This is a reality that the Supersizemypay stategy is attempting to deal with.
Re: Minimum wage workers take McDonalds to Court
And i am holding some severe words in check for anyone who believes that simply because someone has to work for a giant corporation like McD's that they should be held equally responsible for the companies actions. I mean, of course last time i worked on the counter i was also putting in my submissions to maintain the minimum wage as low as possible for lil' ole me. weren't you?
Full points to every single worker who has gone on strike for this cause.
Boycotting is a lovely idea, but McDonalds is not going to a a RATS ASS if 200, 300 or even 30000 people boycott their business. there are hundreds of millions of others who keep them afloat. Striking, however, is a true show of strength through solidarity.
Only through great struggle is anything worthwhile achieved. only through solidarity are we a force to recon with.

McDonald's Delivers Strong Global Comparable Sales for February
Global comparable sales increased 4.7%
U.S. comparable sales up 3.6%
Europe comparable sales rose 5.4%
OAK BROOK, IL – McDonald's Corporation announced today that global comparable sales for McDonald’s restaurants increased 4.7% in February.
McDonald's Chief Executive Officer Jim Skinner commented, "Our strategic initiatives and intense focus on the customer delivered another month of strong results. We posted positive comparable sales across all geographic segments for February and marked our 34th consecutive month of positive global comparable sales performance. Both achievements are a testament to the effectiveness and momentum of our Plan to Win.
"During February, we continued to satisfy our U.S. customers’ appetite for choice and variety with an appealing new menu addition – the Spicy Premium Chicken Sandwich. Our winning line-up of Premium Chicken Sandwiches, popular breakfast menu options and extended hours delivered a solid 3.6% increase in comparable sales, despite harsh weather in certain parts of the country.
"Europe’s February comparable sales rose 5.4% driven primarily by strong results in France and Germany. In addition, the U.K.’s ongoing emphasis on brand building initiatives generated positive comparable sales in February. All three markets added greater variety and excitement to the menu by featuring premium burgers and specialty promotional menu options. We remain focused on building momentum across Europe by providing relevant menu selections and everyday value in an inviting and contemporary atmosphere.
"I’m pleased with our sales results for the first two months of 2006, and I’m confident that our System’s focus and alignment on executing the Plan to Win will deliver long-term profitable growth."

Definitions
Comparable sales represent sales at all McDonald's restaurants in operation at least thirteen months including those temporarily closed, excluding the impact of currency translation. Some of the reasons restaurants may be temporarily closed include road construction, reimaging or remodeling, and natural disasters such as hurricanes. Management reviews the increase or decrease in comparable sales compared with the same period in the prior year to assess business trends.
Information in constant currency is calculated by translating current year results at prior year average exchange rates.
Systemwide sales include sales at all McDonald's restaurants, including those operated by the Company, franchisees and affiliates. Management believes Systemwide sales information is useful in analyzing the Company's revenues because franchisees and affiliates pay rent, service fees and/or royalties that generally are based on a percent of sales with specified minimum rent payments.
Upcoming Communications
Jan Fields, President U.S. Central Division, will speak at 1:45 p.m. (Pacific Time) at the JP Morgan Gaming, Lodging and Restaurants Conference on March 22, 2006. This presentation will be webcast live and available for replay for a limited time thereafter at www.investor.mcdonalds.com.
McDonald's tentatively plans to release March sales on April 13, 2006.

Re: Minimum wage workers take McDonalds to Court
> Boycott never has, and is never going to change anything
Wow! I reminds me of someone (vegan) that I once heard drop such a pearl of wisdom into a conversation on food buying politics and preferences; and there I was thinking that a large part of vegan motivation was boycotting what they saw as corrupt/ immoral/ etc practice. Your veganism isn't going to mean shit to the dairy or meat industries, but chances are that over the course of a few years you're going to have contributed one less bobby calf to the pile. Pointless?
I take it you've never heard heard of Rosa Parks? Yes, racism is still endemic in that part of the world, but are you telling me that nothing was achieved just because the entire system didn't come crashing down? If you really only consider catastrophic change as a measure of an actions worth (and that's the only way I can figure that you achieved your epiphany), then you'll probably never see the point in anything much. Sad.
Funny how people mix up shallow slogans with considered wisdom. Perhaps you don't see boycott as effecting the change you want? McDonalds won't cry for my lost consumer dollar, I'm not that significant a part of their market segment as far as my fast food spending goes, but the more important point to me is that the money I do spend on fast food means a lot more to a small independant cafe, or bakery, or falafellery. Just in the same way that not buying Keri fruit juice is going to mean a hell of a lot more to Huia than it is to Coke.
Very few individual actions ever have, or ever will, change anything in their own right, but if you don't see the point in trying then you've just been sucked into the machine, whether you eat at McD's or not.
Re: Minimum wage workers take McDonalds to Court
I don't eat animals just as I wouldn't eat humans, nothing to do with the political strategy of boycott.
" Your veganism isn't going to mean shit to the dairy or meat industries, but chances are that over the course of a few years you're going to have contributed one less bobby calf to the pile."
Thats right! I agree, but I'm still ganna be vegan because for that one calf, thats a whole world of difference.
"Pointless?

Umm you are presume way too much here.. Yes Rosa Parks is an example but of what? Boycott may be a useful tool within a strategy, but not alone.
"Funny how people mix up shallow slogans with considered wisdom. Perhaps you don't see boycott as effecting the change you want?"
Yup, thats why I prefer Direct Action.
"McDonalds won't cry for my lost consumer dollar, I'm not that significant a part of their market segment as far as my fast food spending goes, but the more important point to me is that the money I do spend on fast food means a lot more to a small independant cafe, or bakery, or falafellery. I agree with that too.. But then again, capatalism is captalism is..
"Very few individual actions ever have, or ever will, change anything in their own right, but if you don't see the point in trying then you've just been sucked into the machine, whether you eat at McD's or not."
Well I don't eat at McDonalds, however I would like to see them produce a vegan burger...
