Occupation isn't Liberation - Protests around Aotearoa

250 people protested against 'the war machine' in Wellington on Saturday. World-wide protests marked the thrid anniversary of the US-led invasion of Iraq. Speakers talked about New Zealand's imperialist involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq. Five people were arrested outside the American Embassy following a waterbomb attack on the embassy at the very end of the march. The activists have been charged with wilful damage (2), obstruction (3) and resisting arrest (1). [Reports and photos 1 | 2 ]

In Hamilton 600 packets of pretzels and leaflets were handed out as a reference to George W. Bush almost choked on a pretzel in January 2002 while watching an NFL football game, briefly fainting and losing consciousness.

In Auckland, around 200-300 people marched from the US Consulate up to the ANZ bank and back past the UK Consulate to QE2 square for the SuperSizeMyPay rally and march to Myers Park.

Awesome. A good turnout and sounds like good level of enthusiasm and militancy. Shame about the arrests but that just proves the point that the police aren't really a force to protect the public from dangerous people, just to protect the rich from the pissed off poor. (You may claim that individual members are alright, but that doesn't change the aims of the institution - look at the McD's supersizemypay campaigns for example)

Public awareness all the way, aye.

That these rallies are held is very important, because without them who will give the public the chance to voice their displeasure at a world gone crazy?
