I think the way that the corporate media has spun the student walkouts is absolutely despicable. On 3 news the other night the reporter was not only Actively showing contempt for the brave (ok, and potentially interested in having a day off, but at least they had a good reason) students who went on the march. He also verbally attacked Simon Oosterman claiming that he was responsible for the action and for it's taking off down queen street.

Since A) he didn't organise it, just made it possible for the students to get to aotea square, and B) didn't plan the march (indeed no one planned the march) how is he expected to have marshalls prepared for it?? Even if he had marshalls, they wouldn't be able to control a group that large, especially of high school students.

I'm not saying i completely condone the actions of 1 or 2 individuals within the march (standing in front of ambulances IS stupid), but as a whole their willingness to stand up for their beliefs is admirable and should be encouraged, not publicly slammed by every mainstream media source around.

My compliments to Aotearoa Radical Youth and to every student who participanted in the march. A great idea, a great action, and great photos :P

i agree standing in front of ambulance is noramlly very stupid, but i stood in front of an ambulance that wasnt using its siren and was travelling very quickly and towards and was about to hit many many people sitting on the ground, endangering their safety, which i had taken personal responsibility for.

Omar, I wasn't there, but from all the accounts I've read it sounds like you did exactly the right thing and kept your head in a potentially very nasty situation.

High schools hit hard in youth jobs protests

PARIS, March 21, 2006 (AFP) - Protests over the French government's contested youth employment law spread from universities to hundreds of secondary schools Tuesday, amid warnings of a growing threat to public order in Paris suburbs.

According to the FIDL union of secondary school students, some 25 percent of the country's 4,370 lycées were hit by total or partial closures as part of the campaign against Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin's First Employment Contract (CPE).

"The mobilisation in the lycées is growing," the FIDL said.

There were no government figures on school closures, but in Paris the education authorities said 28 out of 110 lycées were closed or experiencing disturbances.

In the Seine-Saint-Denis area of the northern Paris suburbs — where last November's riots started — 25 out of 64 lycées were affected, and police said they were increasingly concerned about the threat of violent incidents.


Cars were set alight overnight in the neighbourhood of Drancy and there were scuffles between lycée students and riot police during the morning, police said. At La Courneuve a lycée was attacked by stone-throwers.

"We've passed a turning-point today. Youngsters are wandering about the streets in groups trying to get other students to come out, and they're not hesitating to seek out confrontation with the police or to nick things from shops on the way," a police officcer told AFP.

In the Essonne area of the southern Paris suburbs police used tear-gas to disperse a crowd of some 400 lycée students who were hurling stones at them in the town of Savigny-sur-Orge.

Protests against the CPE continued to hit universities, with the education ministry saying that 15 were completely shut Tuesday and a further 41 experiencing disturbances.

Student groups have called for a day of action in lycées and universities on Thursday, and a nationwide day of strikes and demonstrations has been announced by trade unions for next Tuesday.

A new contract for under 26-year-olds that can be broken off during a two year trial period, the CPE is attacked by opponents as a breach of hard-won labour rights.

The government says it is a tool for bringing down youth unemployment, which is more than 50 percent in the poor high-immigration areas hit by November's riots.

It didn't have it's sounds on, and even if it did - you wouldn't have been able to tell it was an ambulance with the sound of the police motorbike and other such stuff. it was moving quite quickly and omar tried to wave it down. At NO time, did he jump on the ambulance. He was not stopping it, he was slowing it down so people could get out of the way. shame on tv3, but then, what do you expect?? that was the story for the jorno. alistair was his name. he had obviously written the story when he woke up that morning.

Trade unionist and students in France set for a one-day general strike

Trade union leaders in France have called a one-day general strike for Tuesday of next week.

The unions are demanding the withdrawal of the CPE, a new employment law being pushed by the Tory government that would allow young workers to be sacked for any reason without notice.

The outcome of this battle will affect everyone in the European Union. If the right wing government wins it will accelerate the race to the bottom across Europe as governments compete to drive down wages and rights at work.

A victory for the workers and students will, in contrast, drive forward the growing resistance to free market Europe.

The day of action – which will coincide with a strike of 1.5 million workers here in Britain – promises to bring together the power of French workers and that of the huge student-led movement that has rocked France in the past two weeks.

Students in universities and lycées (high schools) have been demonstrating, striking and occupying their schools and lecture theatres in protest at the CPE.

Up to two million people took to the streets against the new laws last Saturday, with further protests planned for Tuesday and Thursday of this week.

The movement grew during the week as occupations spread to more universities. It was significantly deepened as both lycée students and young people from the banlieues (suburbs) came out onto the streets.

All of this has created a massive political crisis for the French government. Prime minister Dominique de Villepin has refused to back down over the CPE, while other factions on the right are openly questioning his judgement over the issue.

The government’s response to the demonstrations has been brutal – sending in the riot police to attack students, workers and young people.

Cyril Ferez, a 39 year old telecom worker and activist in the Sud-PTT trade union, lay in a coma on Tuesday of this week after being trampled by riot police in Paris last Saturday.

The police refused to call for medical assistance as Cyril lay on the ground, even though he was obviously suffering from serious injuries. Sud-PTT issued a statement denouncing “in the strongest terms” the police violence at the demo.

On Monday the strength of the movement finally pushed France’s trade union leaders into issuing the call for a general strike.

But it is not clear that a one-day strike will be enough to break the Tory government. Villepin hopes that the student movement will have run out of steam by then, allowing him to ride out the crisis.

The national student coordination committee, which oversees the university strikes, met in the city of Dijon last Sunday.

It appealed for an immediate all-out general strike until the government withdraws the CPE.

Protests Over Immigration Bills Continue

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Tens of thousands of students walked out of school in California and other states Monday, waving flags and chanting slogans in a second week of protests against legislation to crack down on illegal immigrants.

In Washington, 100 demonstrators wore handcuffs at the Capitol to protest a bill that would make it a felony to be in this country illegally and would make it crime to dispense aid to the nation's 11 million illegal immigrants.

Immigrant supporters also object to legislation that would also impose new penalties on employers who hire illegal immigrants and would build fences along part of the U.S.-Mexican border.

More than 500,000 people gathered in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday, and tens of thousands rallied in Phoenix and Milwaukee last week.

On Monday, California's Cesar Chavez Day, more than 14,000 students marched out of 16 Los Angeles-area schools, including the San Fernando Valley and the wealthy coastal enclave of Pacific Palisades, said Monica Carazo, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles school district.

By midmorning, the protests had spread to downtown, where hundreds of students walked the streets and chanted. The boycott had the tacit approval of school officials in some of the heavily Hispanic downtown schools, where word was passed through hall posters and public address systems.

In some areas, teachers and administrators walked with students ''as a safety measure,'' Carazo said.

In Washington, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved legislation that clears the way for millions of undocumented workers to seek U.S. citizenship without having to first leave the country.

The committee also voted to strip out proposed criminal penalties for residents found to be in this country illegally, clearing the way for the full Senate to begin debate Tuesday.

In Los Angeles, more than 1,000 students encircled City Hall and some met with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa in his office.

''We've been here for many years. We work hard. We contribute to the economy of the U.S.,'' said Belmont High School student Fermin Vasquez, 18.

A few schools chose to bar their doors to prevent walkouts. Officials at Huntington Park High School locked the gates after classes started, but the students climbed over a chain-link fence and joined marchers in their heavily immigrant community.

Police went on a citywide alert, but most protests were peaceful.

Students threw bottles and rocks in Riverside, and more than a dozen arrests were made in Escondito in San Diego County, authorities said.

Hundreds of teenagers also walked out of several high schools in Dallas and headed for a rally at a park, some carrying Mexican flags and others posters calling for Congress to recognize immigrant rights.

In Detroit, protesters waving Mexican flags marched from the southwest side of the city where many Hispanics live toward a federal building downtown.

''We are illegal immigrants if you trace our heritage all the way back, but we are here and we are working and we are living the American dream,'' said Janet Padron, a 22-year-old Allen Park resident.

''Do you see the community?'' Padron asked, pointing to the thousands of people around her. ''Do you see how many people didn't go to work today?''

Stockholm: Workers and youth demonstrate against CPE-inspired law

A report from Sweden, where the French youth revolt has inspired local opposition to proposed youth labour reforms:

The Chairman of the Swedish liberal party Centerpartiet, Maud Olofsson, recently proclaimed that Sweden should introduce new youth labour laws. She openly admitted that she has been directly inspired by French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepins controversial French CPE law.

Centerpartiet could very well be in a government position, after the Swedish elections which are set to take place in September together with other liberal and conservative parties of the right. Then this law would become a fact.

Early Tuesday morning, workers in Gothenburg, Sweden smashed several windows on the Centerpartiet local office. Windows also got shattered at the French Consulate in support for the struggle in France. On Tuesday evening about 500 people, youths and workers, gathered at the central plaza in Stockholm to demonstrate against the Centerpartiet attack on worker rights and in solidarity with the youth revolt in France.

The demonstration marched towards the Franch embassy while demonstrators shouted slogans that this was only the beginning for people in France and Sweden. When the demonstration reached the embassy a line of police horses blocked the path of demonstration, but the were forced to retreat as the demonstration defended itself with rotten eggs and snowballs. The demonstration then turned back and marched towards the Old City and the main office of Centerpartiet.

Along the route windows of banks and governments building where smashed, as well as windows of the Centerpartiet office. Shortly after that the demonstration dispersed itself. The police where unable to make any arrests. Even though several journalists attended to the demonstration, mainstream media has not written a word about the protest.

Yesterday in Copenhagen, 200 protested in front of the French embassy in solidarity with French youths. Last week a similar show of solidarity took place in Dublin, Ireland.
