NDU Flying Picket at Countdown Lower Hutt

Unionists from the NDU and supporters from around Wellington blockade a truck transporting goods from the Palmerston North Distribution Center at Lower Hutt Countdown, September 6th 2006. Am in rush so can't write much. After about 30mins the police turned up and moved everyone apart for the truck to enter. We gave filers to a few truck divers that came and they left not crossing the picket line. There were no arrests but one crazy van driver who tried to run us over... (assault with a deadly weapon??).

Re: NDU Flying Picket at Countdown Lower Hutt

It wasn't a picket. A picket assumes some attempt was going to be made to stop the trucks supplying the alternative distribution centre. Rather, the Wellington NDU as well as their Unite Union representative had specifically stated that no attempt was to be made to stop trucks if police asked us to move, and nothing was to be done that might risk arrest. Rather, we were there for mere symbolism ("moral support"), providing absolutely no practical help, and instead "building the movement".

There may have been only a dozen of us, but we could have made an attempt, especially considering the Team Policing Unit was in Palmy and we were only dealing with local police. And there were other things that should have happened that didn't.

This alternative distribution centre is being used to bypass the strike, and every effort should be made to stop it. Symbolic feel-goodness simply doesn't cut it, and unions should be encouraging support rather than attempting to restrict and manage it.

I wasn't able to be there Torrance and so can't comment on the events of the day. But I do relate 100% to your message:

"Symbolic feel-goodness simply doesn't cut it, and unions should be encouraging support rather than attempting to restrict and manage it."

As you say:

"A picket assumes some attempt was going to be made to stop the trucks supplying the alternative distribution centre."

That is my understanding of the word's meaning too.

I agree 100% with the union's stand but why hasn't anyone told how little the company pays and whether other people would like to suvive on these rates of pay I don't know what they are payed but I am assuming because supermarkets pay lousy wages
