FOOD NOT BOMBS RESIST POLICE IN CHRISTCHURCH
At the height of Christchurch's BUSKERS FESTIVAL Food Not Bombs activists refused to move when council staff and police bullied them to do so. Stating Council Health and Safety standards, bylaws and traffic laws, these officers tried to get the group to move on, but to no avail.

Food Not Bombs is an autonomous group of people who share free food every Friday in Cashel Mall to whomever wants it. To them, serving up free food is a statement against capitalism and the corporatisation of a basic human right, food.

"Food is a right not a privilege, and poverty is violence,so if someone goes hungry today we are at war." said Edith, one of the people at the "Anti-capitalist" kitchen.

"We have been sharing our food with the people of Christchurch for over two years on a regular basis and this is an escalation in the harrassment and attempts by the Christchurch City Council to shut Food Not Bombs down.We have received visits from council staff before and have been fined for parking on Latimer Square as part of the Food Not Bombs Kitchen at the Really Free Market. We are to appear in court next Wednesday (21 January) to challenge this so called infringement" said Al,one of the group.

As the harassment of the police was in progress, a young man continued to give away soup, bread and sandwiches to a variety of people who gathered around. At one point, another person dishing up soup was told by a police officer to put down his ladle and pack up, but he refused to do so.

"If this stuff isn't gone in 10 minutes we will bring in reinforcements and remove it ourselves" said one police officer.

At this point the officers moved off and the group continued to share their food until it was all gone. No further incident occurred, however it appeared that the council had made their intentions clear. They wanted the group gone.

Re: FOOD NOT BOMBS RESIST POLICE IN CHRISTCHURCH

maybe the health and safety laws only apply to food that is to be sold, rather than food to be given away??

it might also be useful to check out the regulations which apply to dirty old sausage sizzle fundraisers, soup kitchens (is there one in chch) etc...

have these hassles been ongoing for very long? Hasn't food not bombs been operating in chch for years?

Re: Food not Bombs Resist Police in Christchurch

"Conspiracy to commit Lunch"

fuck the Police and the council. next friday, do it again, with as many people and TV cameras as possible

Re: Food not Bombs Resist Police in Christchurch

According to the council's health and safety officer, this is not the case.We were told it has to be "approved/permitted" and come from a "commercial, cerified" kitchen. We have been getting visits from council staff for some time but this is the first time we have had three council inspectors turn up and tell us that what we are doing is illegal and we must apply and pay for a permit. It's is also the first time that they have had the police come and threaten us with arrest and confiscation of our food if we didn't stop sharing it with people.
Last week we had the organisers of the Buskers Festival try to remove us,telling us that they"owned"the public space for the duration of the festival.
The Buskers Festival here in Christchurch is very regulated and controlled.Buskers who turn up in Christchurch and try to perform without "permission"are moved on.There is heavy security surrounding "approved" buskers with security guards stationed at all times beside performers in case something sinister occurs.
The City Council also plan to put roads through Cashel Mall and wish to redefined this public space as "retail only".This is another reason for the harassment of FNB as they do not wish to see the poor of Christchurch gather and share food in this space, they would rather it be hidden from tourists. This is the reason they are so upset at our presence in the Mall with so many international visitors here for the Festival, and that is why Christchurch FNB will continue to share anything we choose in these public spaces, because we don't need anyones permission to freely associate and carry out acts of Mutual Aid.We will be there next week and we will have more nutritous vegetarian food to share with who ever is hungry because "food is a right not a privilege"!!!!

Re: Re: Food not Bombs Resist Police in Christchurch

Hey FNB crew,
good on you for sticking to your BBQ, & dishing it all out.
Here in Welli there's been some warm-up, random harrassment of high-school kids by cops with new recruits in tow, in the leadup to the Fringe Fest, Cuba Carnival, etc, which is all about to kick off.
WCC are also trying to say that public space is not for all members of the public, and denying the very public face of homelessness and poverty by arresting particular homeless people on a regular basis (poverty = criminal....)

FNB in Welli has been operating in Newtown, rather than CBD, for some time as a way of reaching more poor, and subverting the harassers.

This is a disturbing trend in local government responses to social policy failures (after all, high employment ratios are supposed to solve poverty, right??? Never mind the disjunct between low minimum wages and high CPI index movements...). There is a need for comment on the high cost of current social policies, which FNB provides in action by alleviating need & utilising resources which would 'normally' go to waste. Capitalism thrives on waste and 'labour shortage', these policing measures are an attempt to protect business owners at the expense of ratepayers' wellbeing (and we're all ratepayers whether we own or rent....)

kia kaha, keep up the struggle.

Re: Re: Re: Food not Bombs Resist Police in Christchurch

Hey i've been interested in food not bombs for some time. Is there a regular cook up in Newtown now? I would like to help. How should I get in touch? Joe

Re: Food not Bombs Resist Police in Christchurch

You live in a society, which is governed by laws. We are a free, open and incredibly tolerant society because we do, for the most part, obey the laws, whether we like them or not. Mechanisms abound to change those laws we do not like. Just try pulling your stunts in China, Iran, the Darfur, etc and see how long you stay out of a torture chamber, let alone live. If the police lay a finger on you here in the West you sue them (which is to say, the taxpayers and LAW-abiding citizenry) for millions. Disgusting.....

We live in New Zealand, foo

Show me a person that's never broken one single law, however trivial. Parking in a non-designated place and speeding counts. We live in a society because humans are social animals and have been since before Hammurabi decided to write down a bunch of rules. We co-exist because we like it, not because there are laws. Ask any anthropologist.

Have you ever actually tried changing the law? Did you consider the end of the moratorium on GE as a deeply un-democratic exercise? A very clear majority (over 80% according to the National Business Review) opposed it, but it went through anyway.

If you think you can sue the police for millions, you should leave the US and come to NZ for a little while. It's unusual for a settlement to be over the 5-figure range. The cops can (and do) brutalise people in custody with impunity for the most part. That's the reality in this country.

Re: Food not Bombs Resist Police in Christchurch

Food is a "right"? Another product of the public schools contributing to society!

Re: Food not Bombs Resist Police in Christchurch

Food Not Bombs is meeting a needs in CHCH that are largely ignored. The need for those who are hungry to be fed and the need for food that would otherwise be wasted to be used. The actions on Friday of The CHCH City Council are just another example of their bullying tactics. Edgeware Pool, Brighton Mall, The City Mall development, The Bus Exchange and urban redevelopment where rules go ahead of common sense and brick walls are built next to lounge windows and back doors.... to name few examples! It is time for CHCH as a whole to wake up and be counted. It is time to take to the streets and be heard. Submissions and due process do not work in CHCH at the moment. Vote and get rid of ALL current councilors! Complain about senior staff who do as they please! Disrupt CCC meetings where councilors need to vote on current issues.... like the Mall and the current urban plan. Take back our city and keep our malls car free!

Isn't Food Not Bombs a right not a privilege in this democratic city!!!!

NAZZ.

Re: Food not Bombs Resist Police in Christchurch

Oh the good name of Chirstchurch is spoiled. What rules govern sharing a home made lunch with a friend, two friends, three friends?

Re: Food not Bombs Resist Police in Christchurch

keep up the good work guys. thats f****d. im on the coast protesting to save the giant snails. i'll touch base when back monday / tuesday. as a locally elected member i think its full of hypocrisy. the council just recently spray painted on public space anti liquor graffiti. i hope they are going to be prosecuted for willful damage as well ;) i'll ask some questions of local authorities when back. kia kaha.

Re: Food not Bombs Resist Police in Christchurch

Great. As the deputy chair of a chch community board Yani is just the person to find out about the bylaws applicable to your activities and to convey any grievances you may have to council.
I suggest you make use of his offer of help.

and as ogi said "what rules cover sharing a home made lunch with friends"?

Re: Food not Bombs Resist Police in Christchurch

Very, very sad to see. Boo, hiss to the CCC!

Re: Food not Bombs Resist Police in Christchurch

Christchurch wake up! The council that you vote for are fascist thugs. It's time to make the city of the people, for the people, by the people except for the select few. Instead of wasting money on busker and other festivals why not supply food banks with funds and provide more housing for the poor?

Re: Food not Bombs Resist Police in Christchurch

If people are really upset about this why not contact the mayor and councillors of Christchurch about this. Their email addresses can be found on www.ccc.govt.nz/Council/Members and you can express your views on this disgracful behaviour. I have and said how Christchurch's friendly city reputation must be a fallacy if the council in it browbeats people that are benifiting the community, etc.

Re: Food not Bombs Resist Police in Christchurch

Looks like the fascist gods are in motion again in the Christchurch City Council!

Re: Food not Bombs Resist Police in Christchurch

If things like this are allowed to happen in Chch then I'm not going there for my vacation!!! Instead I'll be going to Wellington, Nelson or Dunedin to spend my hard earned cash.

Re: Re: Food not Bombs Resist Police in Christchurch

I too was thinking about going for a holiday in CHCH but not anymore after this.

Re: Food not Bombs Resist Police in Christchurch

What is wrong with CCC? All what these people were doing was sharing food. As if they were shouting: "Smash the state, The CCC are masturbators or The Labour Party sux"! It seems that if anyone does anything compassionate in Christchurch they get stepped on by jackboots.

Re: Food not Bombs Resist Police in Christchurch

It appears that the Christchurch City Council slogans should be:

War is Peace,

Slavery is Freedom and

Ignorance is Strength.

I wonder where I read these before. It wasn’t in a book written by George Orwell titled 1984 was it?

Re: Food not Bombs Resist Police in Christchurch

FnB you have jazzed up many a my lunchtimes with good hearty vegetarian kai - - i have seen you feed those less able to afford to feed themselves and seen you draw the community together with wholesome food - people who would otherwise never meet - there has been music and mirth and sharing - worry over others - making friends and caring for each other - it is a travesty for you good people to be molested in this way - kia kaha sisters and brothers stay strong - Braden

Al and Edith...

humans who help other less fortunate humans should be praised and respected, not treated like criminals.

We all have a calling in our lives, and only some of us follow them. Al and Edith have a calling to help others. Some of us also have that calling, but we don't act on it.

Al & Edith do, and do it in an incredible non-ego way, with little or no support or financial help. in fact it costs them to do it. I hold them both very highly for thier generosity and dedication to our causes.

The city council are back to front, they should be supporting them, allocating a part of the mall or square to them. giving them money so they can buy a bigger pot/better stove/free parking tickets etc, whatever they need to make it better!

the council should go to all efforts to help make sure that Food Not Bombs doesnt stop in chch. I believe this would be in thier best interests. The council wouldnt shut down a church 'free soup' stand. what's the difference?

Al & Edith rulez!

Re: Food not Bombs Resist Police in Christchurch

oh my. im from the san diego food not bombs. we havent encountered any police or much problems other then a small mishap with someone from the church, it was all a big misunderstanding. but fuck man, when i read this article, it gave me chills and made me feel like the world still has some fucking cool ass people. im glad to be apart of Food not bombs somewhere. ours is so small. we serve at the park, but its growing every week, and even the little influence we bring feels like a strong force. hope to the good vibes.

Re: Food not Bombs Resist Police in Christchurch

I’m from Canada and at the moment I’m in Auckland planning to tour the rest of NZ. I did plan to travel to Christchurch after going across Cook Strait, from Wellington, on my way to Queenstown. However, after seeing that it is a police state, by this article, I’ve chosen to bypass Christchurch. Instead I’ll be travelling directly to the Deep South along the West Coast of the South Island, by Nelson, taking in Fox Glacier. I can’t be bothered spending my money in a place where a council attempts to down trod people that take the time and effort to help others.

Re: Food not Bombs Resist Police in Christchurch

Christchurch has their priorities wrong! Instead of feeding the poor they worry about nonsense like investigating bidding for the 2018 Commonwealth Games and designing a new civic building for the Christchurch City Council with the wow factor. Just look at www.stuff.co.nz/thepress for proof. As already been posted: email the mayor and councillors of that city to tell them to get their act together. You can go to www.ccc.govt.nz/Council/Members to find their email addresses.

Re: Re: Food not Bombs Resist Police in Christchurch

Yeah, Chch is one f@#ked up city!

Re: Re: Food not Bombs Resist Police in Christchurch

It is a pity that Christchurch's council and others are too busy sucking up to big business that the people that need help are forgotten about.

Re: Food not Bombs Resist Police in Christchurch

We had the "food issue" as well but when council found out it was vegan all the laws council used (which deal with foods that have meat in them)were all destroyed. Many branches point out that public picnics don't require permits. I suppose you could as easly charge the city with no place to publicly gather,(not sure how that could be worded. As for the traffic issue, I wonder if the city has issue with people leaving church on sunday and causing traffic issues? You live in a society, which is governed by laws. The laws that do exist exist for one purpose and that is to support the rich (the people who made the laws) We are a trapped society, trapped by the fear that we all need to pay rent or the morgage or taxes, We have never truely had a "free" society. And geeting to the point of being free with this system requires that massive amounts of money exist, and can be moved in a heart beat. It is an incredibly intolerant society because we do, for the most part, slag people who are diffrent, or poor, or colored or not colored or who have to work, and suprisingly we justify all this. No body obeys all the laws, least of all those with money. Those mechanisms which exist to change society are put there for the wealthy, and that is why there are restrictions on who can and can't run for office, and those mechanisms which are acessable by everyday people are woefully inadequate to change those laws we do not like. The only reason more of us are not harrassed is because the government realises it needs to appease some of those people who are angry at the laws that are unjust. Keep up the good work. Adri ~

Re: Food not Bombs Resist Police in Christchurch

With this ghastly performance going on in Christchurch no wonder the animal rights groups based there, The NZAVS and SAFE, are lost causes. It seems nowadays Christchurch is full of egoistical megalomaniacs all out to beat others down with their bully boy behaviours. I am happy that I have left Christchurch, the conurbation I grew up in, ages ago and now live abroad in a more enlighten culture.

Re: Food not Bombs Resist Police in Christchurch

So much for the People’s Republic of Christchurch (aka The CCC) looking after the people!!! Just like any other junta it is only there to look after the people with the big bucks and themselves. As the old saying goes: money talks and bullsh*t walks.

Re: Food not Bombs Resist Police in Christchurch

Well done there FNB
It seems that whatever country somebody sets up a food table they get the same reaction from the authorities. If the councils and police are employed to look after the public health and well being, why do they get pissed off at public taking that responsibility for themselves?
The best of FNB is decent grub shared out and forcing the powers that be to show their true colours.
