Background to Waitangi Day Protests: 40 years of Maori Protest
The attached MS Word file is an essay I wrote last year for a History paper on Te Tiriti, about the last forty years of Maori protest. It gives a good background to the protest movement and it's use of tactics. I thought it was particularly relevant in light of the recent announcement by Te Tino Toa to fly Maori flags across Aotearoa. Below is the introduction.
The modern Maori protest movement that began in the late 1960s and early1970s was yet to sharpen its analysis and demands.doc (56 k)
Introduction: The modern Maori protest movement that began in the late 1960s and early 1970s and is continuing into the 21st century some forty years later has developed around support of three key goals; justice, equality and tino rangatiratanga. Maori, sometimes with their Pakeha allies, have in the last forty years taken to the streets and occupied, picketed, rallied, blockaded and hikoied across the nation. They chopped down trees, painted graffiti, smashed windows and international trophies, slashed tyres, threw mud and axes and jumped in front of cars, made and used bombs, disrupted fishing and farming, burnt and shot colonial flags while they raised and carried indigenous ones. This essay could not do justice to even a small selection of these protests. What the essay does attempt to do is boil down the Maori protest movement’s portrayals of the Treaty of Waitangi and the rights it guaranteed to Maori, such as tino rangatiratanga, equality and Crown protection of their land and taonga. By looking at a selection of protest the essay attempts to draw out three inter-connected generalisations as to how the protest has portrayed and discussed the Treaty. These are portrayals of the Treaty are; dishonoured and degraded; a Crown guarantee of equality, justice and self-determination; and a guarantee of Maori sovereignty in the face of all forms of colonialism; including the new neo-liberal economic and biological types.
