Hundreds of people will take to the streets and block traffic in an act of civil disobedience tomorrow in Auckland City, as the radical Climaction coalition on Climate Change takes its demands for free and frequent public transport and System Change to K Road.

Ten bands, 5 Djs, 2 tonnes of snow and One Love are on the menu in what promises to be one of New Zealand's loudest protests yet on the civilisation threatening consequences of rising tides and temperatures.

Join the revolution tomorrow.
3pm K Road
Auckland.

Re: Hundreds expected to block K Road tomorrow in Civil Disobedience Against Climate Change

Blockades are meant to stop bad things - arms shipments, scabs, whaling ships. You're planning to blockade some random folk driving their cars round the CBD. This is foolish, because it sends out the message that cars and their drivers are the problem. They aren't - capitalism and its giant corporations and market-driven governments are. You're only going to piss a lot of ordinary people off and make the left look stupid doing this.

"Hundreds of people will take to the streets..." hmm, i don't understand why organisers announce the expected numbers for a demo the day before. it doesn't make sense!

have fun tomorrow! i look forward to reading reports and seeing some great pics on indymedia ;-)

Re: Hundreds expected to block K Road tomorrow in Civil Disobedience Against Climate Change

they're saying that to get people along to encourage them and the media

Re: Hundreds expected to block K Road tomorrow in Civil Disobedience Against Climate Change

but how will stopping people from driving home from work/shopping/whatever win them over? they'll be pissed

Re: Hundreds expected to block K Road tomorrow in Civil Disobedience Against Climate Change

i don't think its a good idea to hype up numbers before a demo. If you get less people(although i hope you don't) it can be demoralizing and opens you up to unnecessary criticisms. I remember someone cautioning climaction against this strategy last year.

anyway, goodluck. free and frequent public transport sounds like a great demand :)

Re: Hundreds expected to block K Road tomorrow in Civil Disobedience Against Climate Change

people who drive who support the idea of free busses won't be pissed they will support the action non? they can drive around the protest and if rational and aware of the inaction of corporations and government on the issue won't mind being put out to a small degree.
