Protests Rock Te papa

Two loud and angry demos rocked Te papa museum today as animal rights activists highlighted the cruel and inhumane nature of the meat industry. Protests kicked of at 7.30 with protesters screaming and shouting at delegates to the meat conference as they entered Te papa. The delegates were escorted by police into the museum past protesters who yelled “Meat is Murder” “Scumbags” and “Innocent animals under attack – Stand up fight back”. Despite the heavy police presence unknown members of the public managed to remove half of the line separating the delegates from protesters. After the mornings protests police issued noise infringement notices to a member of the actions and got details of people as they were about to drive off. The conference has had an extremely high police presence with a minimum of 20 police marching around the museum grounds in formation and hassling photographers and any member of the public not wearing a suit.

At eleven a rally was held outside Te papa with 40plus members of the public and protesters present. Speeches and chanting were used to inform the museum and the public of our opposition to the meat trade. The link between environmental destruction and the meat industry was drawn and the need to take direct action against the meat industry was highlighted. Chants such as “one struggle one fight human freedom animal rights” and “meat is murder” echoed across the waterfront and hundreds of leaflets were distributed. Towards the end of the protest trespass notices were distributed to two activists for the previous days protests. A stack of trespass notices were unable to be handed out as the cops could not recognize various disguised protesters. Two high school aged self proclaimed “pseudo anarchists” held a protest in favor of meat consumption but were infiltrated by a protester in a wig and suit who held a fake placard saying “Destroy the planet, kill the animals for profit” and “meat the losers” the counter protesters reportedly had no idea that they had a double agent in their midst they held a placard saying “wheat is murder and “meat is yum”. A young Nats and young Act barbecue previously advertised did not take place.

Following the main protest around 25 people returned to Meat on Tory and conducted an extremely loud and angry demo. A paddy wagon and two cars full of officers guarded the front entrance to the shop and observed protesters from across the road. Following the protest police followed the protesters around central Wellington worried that another animal abuser might be targeted.

Re: Protests Rock Te papa

id just like to add that at the saturday te papa demo cops said anyone handing out flyers to the puplic or out of the designated protest area would be arrested. stink.

Re: Protests Rock Te papa

theres no law against handing out flyers to the public, there just being bully boys and girls..again,we need more of these protests the world over ,the more we are the animals voice, the more ppl will maybe ,hopefully choose to be become vegetarian or vegan

Re: Protests Rock Te papa

Go you good things, I love your passion, wish I was with you. The stupidity and cruelty of the meat industry is obivously threatened by the vegans in the world, shout loud. Cruelty creates an acceptance and a numbness in society, and makes a few suits rich. There in spirit

Re: Protests Rock Te papa

IMPRESSIVE WORK! thank goodness there are people like you guys working and caring so hard. love the artwork SAVE THE EARTH GO VEGAN

Re: Re: Protests Rock Te papa

save the earth, go vagen?? Oye damarse! plants produce life giving oxygen. animals produce methayne. which acording to you is bad for us and the ozone. you need to stop killing our planet . Dam vegeterians

Re: Re: Re: Protests Rock Te papa

yeah and agriculture breeds more animals to be slaughtered, so the problem is industrial agriculture - that's the biggest methane contributor. If you eat meat you're supporting this climate changing industry.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Protests Rock Te papa

depriving the world of oxygen forever by killing and eating the vegetation. or breeding a few animals that produce methane for the few short years or months of thier life so we all can eat healthy. lets face it Vegans are killing the planet faster than coal.

Oh yer a feckin eejit, you are!

Re: Protests Rock Te papa

I liked the guy with the "WHEAT IS MURDER" and "MEAT IS YUM" sign, he has a cool jacket.

Millions of animals die each year through the harvesting of wheat and grains, stop eating bread, save small animals!

Re: Protests Rock Te papa

Props to your "infiltrator" for the sneaky sign, I laughed when I saw the picture. Her cover was blown when a protestor snuck over to make sure she was okay, and when she tried to misrepresent the Young Nats to a man who interviewed us for Victoria University's radio station, but she increased our physical presence by 50% and was amusing to keep around.

It was a shame the barbecue never happened, we had to go get McDonalds for lunch, only to find the protest had dispersed in our absence.

I think it is rather questionable that the organisation behind this protest chose to engage in Black Propaganda (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_propaganda) and also interesting that this article doesn't mention the failure that was the evening protest at Parliament.

Re: Re: Protests Rock Te papa

Disregard that last line about the evening protest. I found it in a seperate article.

Re: Re: Re: Protests Rock Te papa

Furthermore, it would seem that prior to my arrival, the Parliament protest was not in fact a big failure. I should really research more before I post.
